✧ Verses of the Qur'an were revealed concerning him. He said: The mother of Sa'd swore that she would never speak to him again until he disbelieved in his religion, and that she would not eat or drink. She said: You claim that Allah has enjoined upon you to honor your parents, and I am your mother, and I command you to do this. He said: She remained for three days until she fainted from exhaustion. Then a son of hers called 'Umara got up and gave her water, and she began to pray against Sa'd. Then Allah revealed this verse: 'And We have enjoined upon man goodness toward his parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you of what you used to do.' He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ obtained a great amount of booty, and in it was a sword. I took it and brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Give me this sword as a gift, for I am one whom you know. He said: 'Return it to where you took it from.' I went back with it, then I returned after that and spoke to him again, and he said: 'Return it to where you took it from.' I went away until, when I wanted to throw it into the pile of spoils, my soul reproached me, so I returned to him and said: Give it to me. He said: He raised his voice at me and said: 'Return it to where you took it from.' Then Allah revealed: 'They ask you about the spoils of war.' I sent for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he came to me. I said: Allow me to divide my wealth wherever I wish. He refused. I said: Then half. He refused. I said: Then a third. He remained silent. So a third was considered permissible. He said: I came upon a group of the Ansar and the Muhajirun, and they said: Come, we will feed you and give you wine to drink - and that was before wine was forbidden. I went to them in a hush - and hush means a garden - and there was a roasted camel's head with them, and a skin of wine. He said: I ate and drank with them. He said: Then I mentioned the Ansar and the Muhajirun and said: The Muhajirun are better than the Ansar. He said: A man took the jawbone of the head and struck me with it, wounding my nose. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him. Then Allah revealed concerning me - meaning himself - the matter of wine: 'Intoxicants, gambling, idolatrous sacrifices, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan.'
