✧ The Prophet ﷺ came to visit him while he was in Makkah, and he disliked dying in the land from which he had emigrated. The Prophet ﷺ said: May Allah have mercy on Sa'd ibn 'Afra'. He had only one daughter, so he said: O Messenger of Allah, should I bequeath all my wealth? He said: "No." He said: Then half? He said: "No." He said: Then a third? He said: "A third, and a third is much. That you leave your heirs wealthy is better than leaving them poor, begging from people. Whatever you spend, it is charity, even a morsel you raise to your wife's mouth. Perhaps Allah will grant you provision and some people will benefit through you, and others will be harmed through you."

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it, and it is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) from him. Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm also narrated it, and there is disagreement about him concerning it: al-Thawrī narrated it from Saʿd, from ʿĀmir b. Saʿd, from his father; and Misʿar said, from Saʿd: "Some of the family of Saʿd narrated to me, from Saʿd." And it is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) from ʿĀmir b. Saʿd, from his father, through the narration of al-Zuhrī and through the narration of Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm.
