✧ I passed by Uthman b. Affan in the mosque and greeted him. He looked me up and down, then did not return my greeting. I went to the Commander of the Believers, Umar b. al-Khattab, and said, "O Commander of the Believers, has something new happened in Islam?" He said, "Why do you say that?" I said, "Nothing, except that I passed by Uthman a short while ago in the mosque and greeted him, and he looked me up and down and then did not return my greeting." So Umar sent for Uthman and called him, and said, "What prevented you from returning your brother's greeting?" Uthman said, "I did not do that." Sa'd said, "I said, 'Yes, you did.'" He said, "Until he swore and I swore." Then Uthman remembered and said, "Yes. I seek God's forgiveness and turn to Him. You passed by me a short while ago while I was reminding myself of a word I had heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ. By God, I never remembered it but my sight and heart were covered with a veil." Sa'd said, "I will inform you of it: The Messenger of God ﷺ mentioned to us the first supplication, then a Bedouin came and distracted him. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ stood up and I followed him. When I feared he would reach his house before me, I struck the ground with my foot. The Messenger of God ﷺ turned to me and said, 'Who is this, Abu Ishaq?' I said, 'Yes, O Messenger of God.' He said, 'What then?' I said, 'No, by God, except that you mentioned to us the first supplication, then this Bedouin came.' He said, 'Yes, the supplication of Dhu al-Nun: "There is no god but You; glory be to You; I have been of the wrongdoers." No Muslim ever supplicates his Lord with it for anything but He answers him.'"
