✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ came to visit me during the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage due to an illness that had become severe upon me. I said: O Messenger of God, the illness has reached me as you see, and I am a man of wealth, and none will inherit from me except a daughter of mine. Should I give two-thirds of my wealth as charity? He said: "No." I said: Then half of it? He said: "No." Then he said: "A third, and a third is large—or much. Indeed, that you leave your heirs wealthy is better for you than leaving them needy, begging from people. And you will never spend any expenditure seeking thereby the face of God except that you will be rewarded for it, even what you place in your wife's mouth." He said: O Messenger of God, will I be left behind after my companions? He said: "You will not be left behind and then do a righteous deed seeking thereby the face of God except that you will increase thereby in rank and elevation. And perhaps you will be left behind until some people benefit through you and others are harmed through you. O God, complete for my companions their emigration and do not turn them back on their heels. But the wretched one is Sa'd b. Khawla."

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it, and it is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) from him. Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm also narrated it, and there is disagreement about him concerning it: al-Thawrī narrated it from Saʿd, from ʿĀmir b. Saʿd, from his father; and Misʿar said, from Saʿd: "Some of the family of Saʿd narrated to me, from Saʿd." And it is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) from ʿĀmir b. Saʿd, from his father, through the narration of al-Zuhrī and through the narration of Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm.
