قُلْتُ لِعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ: أَيْ خَالُ، أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ قِصَّتِكُمْ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ، قَالَ: اقْرَأْ بَعْدَ الْعِشْرِينَ وَالْمِائَةِ مِنْ آلِ عِمْرَانَ تَجِدْ قِصَّتَنَا: وَإِذْ غَدَوْتَ مِنْ أَهْلِكَ تُبَوِّئُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مَقَاعِدَ لِلْقِتَالِ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: إِذْ هَمَّتْ طَائِفَتَانِ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ تَفْشَلا قَالَ: هُمُ الَّذِينَ طَلَبُوا الْأَمَانَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ، إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: وَلَقَدْ كُنْتُمْ تَمَنَّوْنَ الْمَوْتَ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ تَلْقَوْهُ فَقَدْ رَأَيْتُمُوهُ وَأَنْتُمْ تَنْظُرُونَ قَالَ: فَهُوَ تَمَنِّي لِقَاءِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: إِذْ تَحُسُّونَهُمْ بِإِذْنِهِ
✧ I said to Abd al-Rahman b. Awf: O uncle, tell me about your story on the day of Badr. He said: Recite after the hundred and twentieth verse of Al Imran and you will find our story: 'And [remember] when you, [O Muhammad], left your family in the morning to post the believers at their stations for the battle' up to His saying: 'When two parties among you were about to lose heart.' He said: They are the ones who sought protection from the polytheists. Up to His saying: 'And you had certainly wished for death before you met it, so you have seen it while you were looking on.' He said: That is the longing of the believers for the encounter. Up to His saying: 'When you were slaying them by His permission.'

أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ خَرَجَ إِلَى الشَّامِ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ بِسَرْغَ لَقِيَهُ أُمَرَاءُ الْأَجْنَادِ: أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ وَأَصْحَابُهُ، فَأَخْبَرُوهُ أَنَّ الْوَبَاءَ قَدْ وَقَعَ بِالشَّامِ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: ادْعُوا لِي الْمُهَاجِرِينَ الْأَوَّلِينَ. فَدُعُوا لَهُ، فَاسْتَشَارَهُمْ، فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: خَرَجْتَ لِأَمْرٍ وَلَا نَرَى أَنْ تَرْجِعَ. وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: مَعَكَ بَقِيَّةُ النَّاسِ وَأَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَا نَرَى أَنْ تُقْدِمَهُمْ عَلَى هَذَا الْوَبَاءِ، فَقَالَ لَهُمُ: ارْتَفِعُوا عَنِّي، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ادْعُوا لِيَ الْأَنْصَارَ، فَدُعُوا لَهُ، فَاسْتَشَارَهُمْ، فَسَلَكُوا سَبِيلَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَاخْتَلَفُوا كَاخْتِلَافِهِمْ، قَالَ: قُومُوا عَنِّي، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ادْعُوا لِي مَنْ كَانَ هَاهُنَا مِنْ مَشْيَخَةِ قُرَيْشٍ، مِنْ مُهَاجِرَةِ الْفَتْحِ، فَدُعُوا لَهُ، فَاسْتَشَارَهُمْ، فَلَمْ يَخْتَلِفْ عَلَيْهِ رَجُلَانِ، فَقَالُوا: نَرَى أَنْ تَرْجِعَ بِالنَّاسِ، وَلَا تُقْدِمَهُمْ عَلَى هَذَا الْوَبَاءِ، فَنَادَى عُمَرُ: إِنِّي مُصْبِحٌ عَلَى ظَهْرٍ، فَاجْتَمَعُوا عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ: أَفِرَارًا مِنْ قَدَرِ اللهِ ؟ قَالَ: لَوْ غَيْرُكَ قَالَهَا يَا أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ، نَعَمْ، فِرَارًا مِنْ قَدَرِ اللهِ إِلَى قَدَرِ اللهِ، أَرَأَيْتَ لَوْ كَانَتْ لَكَ إِبِلٌ فَهَبَطَتْ وَادِيًا ذَا عُدْوَتَيْنِ: إِحْدَاهُمَا خَصْبَةٌ وَالْأُخْرَى جَدْبَةٌ، أَلَيْسَ إِنْ رَعَيْتَ الْخَصْبَةَ رَعَيْتَهَا بِقَدَرِ اللهِ، وَإِنْ رَعَيْتَ الْجَدْبَةَ رَعَيْتَهَا بِقَدَرِ اللهِ ؟ فَجَاءَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ، وَكَانَ مُتَغَيِّبًا فِي بَعْضِ حَاجَتِهِ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ عِنْدِي مِنْ هَذَا عِلْمًا، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ بِهِ بِأَرْضٍ فَلَا تَقْدَمُوا عَلَيْهِ، وَإِذَا وَقَعَ بِأَرْضٍ وَأَنْتُمْ بِهَا فَلَا تَخْرُجُوا فِرَارًا مِنْهُ " فَحَمِدَ اللهَ عُمَرُ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ
✧ Umar b. al-Khattab went out to Syria until when he was at Sargh, the commanders of the armies met him: Abu Ubayda b. al-Jarrah and his companions. They informed him that the plague had occurred in Syria. Umar said: Summon for me the earliest Muhajirun. They were summoned for him, and he consulted them. Some of them said: You have gone out for a matter, and we do not think that you should return. Others said: With you are the remainder of the people and the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and we do not think that you should advance them upon this plague. He said to them: Leave me. Then he said: Summon for me the Ansar. They were summoned for him, and he consulted them. They followed the path of the Muhajirun and differed as they differed. He said: Rise from me. Then he said: Summon for me whoever is here from the elders of Quraysh, from the Muhajirun of the conquest. They were summoned for him, and he consulted them. No two men differed upon him; they said: We think that you should return with the people and not advance them upon this plague. So Umar called out: I am departing in the morning upon a mount. They gathered before him, and Abu Ubayda said: Fleeing from the decree of God? He said: If someone other than you had said it, O Abu Ubayda. Yes, we flee from the decree of God to the decree of God. Do you see if you had camels and they descended into a valley with two sides, one fertile and the other barren—if you grazed the fertile one, you grazed it by the decree of God, and if you grazed the barren one, you grazed it by the decree of God? Then Abd al-Rahman came, having been absent on some errand of his, and he said: I have knowledge about this. I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "If you hear of it in a land, do not go forward to it; and if it occurs in a land while you are in it, do not leave fleeing from it." Then Umar praised God and turned back.

✧ Umar b. al-Khattab adjured a group, among them Abd al-Rahman b. Awf: I adjure you by God, by whose permission the heaven and the earth stand, do you know that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "We are not inherited from; what we leave is charity"? They said: Yes.

جَلَسْتُ مَعَ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، فَقَالَ لِي: يَا ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، هَلْ سَمِعْتَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ شَيْئًا أَمَرَ بِهِ الْمَرْءَ الْمُسْلِمَ إِذَا سَهَا فِي صَلَاتِهِ، كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ ؟ قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ: لَا وَاللهِ، أَوَمَا سَمِعْتَ أَنْتَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا ؟ قَالَ: فَقَالَ: لَا وَاللهِ، فَبَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ فِي ذَلِكَ أَتَى عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ، فَقَالَ: فِيمَا أَنْتُمَا ؟ قَالَ: فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ: سَأَلْتُهُ، فَأَخْبَرَهُ عَمَّا سَأَلَهُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ: لَكِنِّي قَدْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُ فِي ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ: فَأَنْتَ عِنْدَنَا عَدْلٌ، فَمَاذَا سَمِعْتَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ؟ قَالَ: فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِذَا سَهَا أَحَدُكُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِ حَتَّى لَا يَدْرِيَ أَزَادَ أَمْ نَقَصَ، فَإِنْ كَانَ شَكَّ فِي الْوَاحِدَةِ وَالثِّنْتَيْنِ فَلْيَجْعَلْهَا وَاحِدَةً، وَإِذَا شَكَّ فِي الثِّنْتَيْنِ أَوِ الثَّلَاثَةِ فَلْيَجْعَلْهَا ثِنْتَيْنِ، وَإِذَا شَكَّ فِي الثَّلَاثِ وَالْأَرْبَعِ فَلْيَجْعَلْهَا ثَلَاثًا حَتَّى يَكُونَ الْوَهَمُ فِي الزِّيَادَةِ، ثُمَّ يَسْجُدُ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُسَلِّمَ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ
✧ I sat with Umar b. al-Khattab, and he said to me: O Ibn Abbas, have you heard anything from the Messenger of God ﷺ about what the Muslim man is commanded to do when he forgets in his prayer, how he should act? I said: No, by God. Or have you, O Commander of the Faithful, heard anything from the Messenger of God ﷺ about that? He said: No, by God. While we were in that state, Abd al-Rahman b. Awf came and said: What are you two discussing? Umar said to him: I asked him, and he informed him of what he had asked. Abd al-Rahman said to him: But I have heard the Messenger of God ﷺ command regarding that. Umar said to him: You are among us a just witness. What did you hear from the Messenger of God ﷺ? Abd al-Rahman said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "If one of you forgets in his prayer until he does not know whether he added or subtracted, then if he doubts between one and two, let him make it one; and if he doubts between two and three, let him make it two; and if he doubts between three and four, let him make it three, so that the doubt is in the addition. Then he should prostrate twice while sitting before he gives the salutation, then give the salutation."

أَنَّ أَبَا الرَّدَّادِ اشْتَكَى، فَعَادَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ، فَقَالَ: خَيْرُهُمْ وَأَوْصَلُهُمْ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ. فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ: إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: قَالَ اللهُ: أَنَا اللهُ، وَأَنَا الرَّحْمَنُ، وَهِيَ الرَّحِمُ، خَلَقْتُ الرَّحِمَ وَاشْتَقَقْتُ لَهَا مِنِ اسْمِي، فَمَنْ وَصَلَهَا وَصَلْتُهُ، وَمَنْ قَطَعَهَا قَطَعْتُهُ. أَوْ: بَتَتُّهُ
✧ Abu al-Raddad fell ill, and Abd al-Rahman b. Awf visited him. He said: The best and most dutiful of them is Abu Muhammad. Abd al-Rahman said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: God said: "I am God, and I am the Merciful. It is the womb. I created the womb and derived for it a name from My name. Whoever maintains it, I maintain him; and whoever severs it, I sever him." Or: "I cut him off."

أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ عَلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ يَعُودُهُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ: وَصَلَتْكَ رَحِمٌ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: قَالَ اللهُ: أَنَا الرَّحْمَنُ وَهِيَ الرَّحِمُ، شَقَقْتُ لَهَا مِنَ اسْمِي، فَمَنْ وَصَلَهَا وَصَلْتُهُ، وَمَنْ قَطَعَهَا قَطَعْتُهُ، أَوْ قَالَ: بَتَّهَا أَبُتُّهُ
✧ He entered upon Abd al-Rahman b. Awf to visit him, and Abd al-Rahman said to him: A womb has connected you. I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: God said: "I am the Merciful, and it is the womb. I derived for it a name from My name. Whoever maintains it, I maintain him; and whoever severs it, I sever him." Or he said: "He severs it, I cut him off."

رَأَيْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ عَوْفٍ يَطُوفُ بِالْبَيْتِ وَهُوَ يَحْدُو، عَلَيْهِ خُفَّانِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ: " مَا أَدْرِي أَيُّهُمَا أَعْجَبُ: حُدَاؤُكَ حَوْلَ الْبَيْتِ، أَوْ طَوَافُكَ فِي خُفَّيْكَ ؟ قَالَ: " قَدْ فَعَلْتُ هَذَا عَلَى عَهْدِ مَنْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْكَ: رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ يَعِبْ ذَلِكَ عَلَيَّ
✧ I saw 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf circumambulating the House while he was chanting, wearing two leather socks. 'Umar said to him: "I do not know which of the two is more astonishing: your chanting around the House, or your circumambulation in your two leather socks?" He said: "I did this during the time of one who is better than you: the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he did not find fault with me for that."

✧ That 'Umar b. al-Khattab passed by 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf while he was circumambulating the House, chanting and wearing two leather socks. He said: "By God, I do not know whether your circumambulation in your two leather socks is more astonishing, or your chanting around the House?" He said: "I did that during the time of one who is better than you: the Messenger of God ﷺ."

✧ Abu Khaythamah narrated to us: Isma'il b. Ibrahim narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Rahman b. Ishaq, from al-Zuhri, from Muhammad b. Jubayr b. Mut'im, from his father, from 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "I witnessed with my paternal uncles..." and he mentioned something similar.

كُنْتُ قَائِمًا فِي رَحَبَةِ الْمَسْجِدِ، فَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ خَارِجًا مِنَ الْبَابِ الَّذِي يَلِي الْمَقْبُرَةَ، فَلَبِثْتُ شَيْئًا، ثُمَّ خَرَجْتُ عَلَى إِثْرِهِ، فَوَجَدْتُهُ قَدْ دَخَلَ حَائِطًا مِنَ الْأَسْوَافِ، فَتَوَضَّأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ، فَسَجَدَ سَجْدَةً فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ فِيهَا، فَلَمَّا تَشَهَّدَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ تَبَادَأْتُ لَهُ، فَقُلْتُ: بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي، سَجَدْتَ سَجْدَةً أَشْفَقْتُ أَنْ يَكُونَ اللهُ قَدْ تَوَفَّاكَ مِنْ طُولِهَا. قَالَ: إِنَّ جِبْرِيلَ بَشَّرَنِي أَنَّهُ مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ، وَمَنْ سَلَّمَ عَلَيَّ سَلَّمَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ
✧ I was standing in the courtyard of the mosque, and I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ coming out of the door that is adjacent to the cemetery. I waited a little, then I went out following him, and I found that he had entered a garden belonging to al-Aswaf. The Messenger of God ﷺ performed ablution, then prayed two rak'ahs, and he prostrated with a prostration in which he prolonged the prostration. When the Messenger of God ﷺ finished the tashahhud, I hastened to him and said: May my father and mother be your ransom, you prostrated with a prostration whose length made me fear that God had taken your soul. He said: "Gabriel gave me good news that whoever sends blessings upon me, God sends blessings upon him, and whoever greets me, God greets him."

أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ حِينَ خَرَجَ إِلَى الشَّامِ فَسَمِعَ بِالطَّاعُونِ، فَتَكَرْكَرَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ: أَشْهَدُ لَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ بِهِ قَدْ وَقَعَ بِأَرْضٍ فَلَا تَدْخُلُوا عَلَيْهِ، وَإِذَا وَقَعَ وَأَنْتُمْ بِأَرْضٍ فَلَا تَخْرُجُوا فِرَارًا مِنْهُ
✧ That when 'Umar b. al-Khattab went out to Syria and heard about the plague, he turned back from that. 'Abd al-Rahman said to him: I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "When you hear that it has broken out in a land, do not enter it, and when it breaks out while you are in a land, do not leave it fleeing from it."

" ثَلَاثٌ وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ إِنْ كُنْتُ لَحَالِفًا عَلَيْهِنَّ: لَا يَنْقُصُ مَالٌ مِنْ صَدَقَةٍ فَتَصَدَّقُوا، وَلَا يَعْفُو رَجُلٌ عَنْ مَظْلِمَةٍ يُرِيدُ بِهَا وَجْهَ اللهِ إِلَّا رَفَعَهُ اللهُ بِهَا عِزًّا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ، وَلَا يَفْتَحُ رَجُلٌ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ بَابَ مَسْأَلَةٍ إِلَّا فَتَحَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ بَابَ فَقْرٍ

✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ came to Abd al-Rahman b. Awf while he was leading the people in prayer, Abd al-Rahman wanted to move back, but the Prophet ﷺ gestured to him: "Stay in your place." So he prayed, and the Messenger of God ﷺ prayed following the prayer of Abd al-Rahman.

✧ He and Umar were discussing prayer. He said: Abd al-Rahman b. Awf passed by us and said: Shall I not tell you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ? He said: I bear witness by the testimony of God that I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: When one of you prays and is uncertain about deficiency in his prayer, let him pray until he becomes uncertain about addition.

انْطَلَقَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي طَلَبِ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ، فَدَعَاهُ، فَخَرَجَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَرَأْسُهُ يَقْطُرُ مَاءً، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " مَا لِرَأْسِكَ ؟ " قَالَ: دَعَوْتَنِي وَأَنَا مَعَ أَهْلِي، فَخِفْتُ أَنْ أَحْتَبِسَ عَلَيْكَ، فَعَجِلْتُ فَقُمْتُ فَصَبَبْتُ عَلَيَّ الْمَاءَ، ثُمَّ خَرَجْتُ، فَقَالَ: هَلْ كُنْتَ أَنْزَلْتَ ؟ قَالَ: لَا، قَالَ: إِذَا فَعَلْتَ ذَلِكَ فَلَا تَغْتَسِلَنَّ، اغْسِلْ مَا مَسَّ الْمَرْأَةَ مِنْكَ وَتَوَضَّأْ وُضُوءَكَ لِلصَّلَاةِ، فَإِنَّ الْمَاءَ مِنَ الْمَاءِ
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ set out to look for a man from the Ansar and called him. The Ansari came out of his house to the Messenger of God ﷺ with his head dripping water. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "What is wrong with your head?" He said: You called me while I was with my wife, and I feared I would be delayed for you, so I hurried and got up and poured water over myself, then came out. He said: Had you ejaculated? He said: No. He said: If you do that, do not wash; wash what of you touched the woman and perform your ablution for prayer, for water is from water.

كَانَ لَا يُفَارِقُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَّا خَمْسَةٌ أَوْ أَرْبَعَةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ لِمَا يَنُوبُهُ مِنْ حَوَائِجِهِ بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ، قَالَ: فَجِئْتُهُ وَقَدْ خَرَجَ، فَاتَّبَعْتُهُ، فَدَخَلَ حَائِطًا مِنْ حِيطَانِ الْأَسْوَافِ، فَصَلَّى، فَسَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ، وَقُلْتُ: قَبَضَ اللهُ رُوحَهُ، قَالَ: فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَدَعَانِي، فَقَالَ: مَا لَكَ ؟ فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَطَلْتَ السُّجُودَ، قُلْتُ: قَبَضَ اللهُ رُوحَ رَسُولِهِ لَا أَرَاهُ أَبَدًا. قَالَ: سَجَدْتُ شُكْرًا لِرَبِّي فِيمَا أَبْلَانِي فِي أُمَّتِي، مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَيَّ صَلَاةً مِنْ أُمَّتِي كُتِبَ لَهُ عَشْرُ حَسَنَاتٍ، وَمُحِيَ عَنْهُ عَشْرُ سَيِّئَاتٍ
✧ Five or four of us from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ would not part from the Messenger of God ﷺ for what befell him of his needs by night and day. He said: I came to him and he had gone out, so I followed him. He entered a garden from the gardens of al-Aswaf and prayed, then prostrated and lengthened the prostration. I said: God has taken his soul. He said: He raised his head and called me, saying: What is the matter with you? I said: O Messenger of God, you lengthened the prostration; I said: God has taken the soul of His Messenger, and I will never see him again. He said: I prostrated in thanks to my Lord for what He has granted me concerning my community: whoever from my community sends one blessing upon me, ten good deeds are written for him and ten bad deeds are erased from him.

✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ conquered Makkah, he turned to al-Taif and besieged it for nineteen or eighteen days but did not conquer it. Then he set out in the evening or morning, then stopped, then announced: O people, I am a predecessor for you, and I enjoin you to treat my family well. Your appointment is the Basin. By the One in whose hand is my soul, they must establish prayer and give zakah, or I will send to them a man from me—or like myself—and he will strike the necks of their fighters and take their descendants captive. He said: The people thought it was Abu Bakr or Umar, but he took Ali by the hand and said: "This is he."

✧ I was a scribe for Jazʾ b. Muawiya, the uncle of al-Ahnaf. Umar's letter came to us a year before his death, saying: Kill every sorcerer, separate every Mahram among the Magians, and forbid them from zamzama. So we killed three sorceresses, and we began separating a man and his female relative in the Book of God. He made much food and invited the Magians, and laid the sword on his thigh, and they threw down a mule-load or two mule-loads of silver, and they ate without zamzama. Umar had not taken jizya from the Magians until Abd al-Rahman b. Awf informed him that the Messenger of God ﷺ had taken it from the Magians of Hajar.

إِنِّي لَوَاقِفٌ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ فِي الصَّفِّ نَظَرْتُ عَنْ يَمِينِي وَشِمَالِي، فَإِذَا أَنَا بَيْنَ غُلَامَيْنِ حَدِيثَةٍ أَسْنَانُهُمَا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ، فَتَمَنَّيْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ بَيْنَ أَضْلَعَ مِنْهُمَا، فَغَمَزَنِي أَحَدُهُمَا، فَقَالَ: يَا عَمُّ، هَلْ تَعْرِفُ أَبَا جَهْلٍ ؟ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، وَمَا حَاجَتُكَ إِلَيْهِ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي ؟ قَالَ: إِنِّي خُبِّرْتُ أَنَّهُ يَسُبُّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَوْ رَأَيْتُهُ لَا يُفَارِقُ سَوَادِي سَوَادَهُ حَتَّى يَمُوتَ الْأَعْجَلُ، قَالَ: فَتَعَجَّبْتُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ، فَغَمَزَنِي الْآخَرُ، فَقَالَ لِي مِثْلَهَا. فَلَمْ أَنْشَبْ أَنْ نَظَرْتُ إِلَى أَبِي جَهْلٍ يَزُولُ فِي النَّاسِ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُمَا: أَلَا تَرَيَانِ ؟ هَذَا صَاحِبُكُمَا الَّذِي تَسْأَلَانِ عَنْهُ، فَابْتَدَرَاهُ فَضَرَبَاهُ بِسَيْفَيْهِمَا حَتَّى قَتَلَاهُ، ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرَاهُ، فَقَالَ: " أَيُّكُمَا قَتَلَهُ ؟ " قَالَ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا: أَنَا قَتَلْتُهُ، قَالَ: " مَسَحْتُمَا سَيْفَيْكُمَا ؟ " قَالَا: لَا. فَنَظَرَ فِي السَّيْفَيْنِ قَالَ: كِلَاكُمَا قَتَلَهُ ". فَقَضَى بِسَلَبِهِ لِمُعَاذِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْجَمُوحِ، وَاسْمُ الْآخَرِ مُعَاذُ بْنُ عَفْرَاءَ
✧ I was standing on the day of Badr in the row. I looked to my right and left, and found myself between two young boys of the Ansar, whose teeth were newly grown. I wished I were between sturdier ones than them. One of them nudged me and said: "O uncle, do you know Abu Jahl?" I said: "Yes, and what do you need with him, O son of my brother?" He said: "I have been told that he insults the Messenger of God ﷺ. By the One in whose hand is my soul, if I see him, my body will not part from his body until the sooner of us dies." He said: I was amazed at that. Then the other nudged me and said the like to me. It was not long before I saw Abu Jahl moving among the people. I said to them: "Do you not see? This is your companion whom you were asking about." They rushed at him and struck him with their swords until they killed him. Then they went to the Messenger of God ﷺ and informed him. He said: "Which of you killed him?" Each one of them said: "I killed him." He said: "Did you wipe your swords?" They said: "No." He looked at the two swords and said: "Both of you killed him." He ruled his belongings as spoils to Mu'adh b. 'Amr b. al-Jamuh, and the name of the other was Mu'adh b. 'Afra'.

دَخَلْتُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ خَارِجًا مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ، فَاتَّبَعْتُهُ أَمْشِي وَرَاءَهُ وَلَا يَشْعُرُ بِي، حَتَّى دَخَلَ نَخْلًا فَاسْتَقْبَلَ الْقِبْلَةَ فَسَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ وَأَنَا وَرَاءَهُ، حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّ اللهَ قَدْ تَوَفَّاهُ، فَأَقْبَلْتُ أَمْشِي حَتَّى جِئْتُهُ، فَطَأْطَأْتُ رَأْسِي أَنْظُرُ فِي وَجْهِهِ، فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ، فَقَالَ: " مَا لَكَ يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ عَوْفٍ ؟ " فَقُلْتُ: لَمَّا أَطَلْتَ السُّجُودَ حَسِبْتُ أَنْ يَكُونَ اللهُ تَوَفَّى نَفْسَكَ، فَجِئْتُ أَنْظُرُ، فَقَالَ: " إِنِّي لَمَّا رَأَيْتَنِي دَخَلْتُ النَّخْلَ لَقِيتُ جِبْرِيلَ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أُبَشِّرُكَ، أَنَّ اللهَ يَقُولُ: مَنْ سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكَ سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ، وَمَنْ صَلَّى عَلَيْكَ صَلَّيْتُ عَلَيْهِ
✧ I entered the mosque and saw the Messenger of God ﷺ coming out of the mosque. I followed him, walking behind him while he did not notice me, until he entered a palm grove. He faced the qiblah and prostrated, lengthening the prostration while I was behind him, until I thought that God had taken his soul. I came walking until I reached him. I lowered my head to look at his face. He raised his head and said: "What is the matter with you, O 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf?" I said: "When you lengthened the prostration, I thought that God had taken your soul, so I came to look." He said: "When you saw me enter the palm grove, I met Gabriel, and he said: I bring you good news: God says, 'Whoever greets you, I greet him, and whoever sends blessings upon you, I send blessings upon him.'"
