✧ Sa'd b. Malik came to us after he had lost his sight, so I went to him to greet him and identified myself to him. He said: Welcome, son of my brother. I have heard that you have a good voice for the Quran. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'This Quran was sent down with sorrow. So when you recite it, weep; and if you do not weep, then make yourselves weep, and chant it. For whoever does not chant it is not one of us.'

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationThere is disagreement over the text (matn) and the chain (isnād) going back to Ibn Abī Mulaykah. Ismāʿīl is weak (ḍaʿīf). He was followed by al-Mulaykī, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, who mentioned it with the addition. The addition about weeping and feigning weeping, and the story contained in it, were related uniquely by these two weak narrators, Ismāʿīl and al-Mulaykī.

machine translation[He was asked] about the hadith of ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Nahīk, from Saʿd, from the Prophet ﷺ: "He is not one of us who does not chant the Qur'an (yataghanna bi'l-Qur'ān)." He said: This is a hadith narrated by ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Mulaykah, and there is disagreement about it from him. ʿAmr b. Dīnār, ʿAbd al-Malik b. Jurayj, Saʿīd b. Ḥassān al-Makhzūmī al-Makkī, Ḥusām b. Miṣakk, ʿUmar b. Qays and al-Layth b. Saʿd narrated it from him, from Ibn Abī Nahīk, from Saʿd. There is disagreement from al-Layth about mentioning Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ. As for the outsiders (al-ghurabāʾ) from al-Layth, they narrated it from him correctly. As for the people of Egypt, they narrated it and said: from Saʿīd b. Abī Saʿīd, 'Saʿd was...'; and some of them said: from Saʿīd or Saʿd. Qutaybah said, from al-Layth, from a man, and he named neither Saʿd nor anyone else. Abū Rāfiʿ Ismāʿīl b. Rāfiʿ narrated it from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Sāʾib. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Bakr al-Mulaykī narrated it from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Sāʾib, from Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ, and he did not say 'from Ibn Abī Nahīk'. ʿAbd al-Jabbār b. al-Ward narrated it from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Yazīd, who said: 'I and ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Sāʾib were standing when Abū Lubābah passed by us', so he traced it back to Abū Lubābah, from the Prophet ﷺ, and did not mention Saʿd; he erred in it. ʿAsal b. Sufyān narrated it from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from ʿĀʾishah, from the Prophet ﷺ. Shuʿbah said: al-Ḥārith b. Murrah al-Ḥanafī corroborated him. Ayyūb b. Khawṭ said, from Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī and ʿAsal b. Sufyān, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from ʿĀʾishah as well. ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Akhnas Abū Mālik said, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Prophet ﷺ. Nāfiʿ b. ʿUmar said, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr, from the Prophet ﷺ; Muḥammad b. Nabhān said that from al-Wāsiṭī, from him. al-ʿAlāʾ b. ʿAbd al-Jabbār disagreed with him, narrating it from Nāfiʿ b. ʿUmar and making it a statement of Ibn al-Zubayr (mawqūf). Ḥammād b. Salamah said, from Dāwūd b. Abī Hind, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, as his own statement, not going beyond him. Ibrāhīm b. Mahdī al-Ubullī said, from Ṭālūt, from Ḥammād, in it: from Ibn ʿAbbās, and he erred. Ibn Jurayj narrated it from ʿAṭāʾ, and there is disagreement from him. ʿAlī b. Gharāb said, from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAṭāʾ, from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr al-Qārī: 'I and al-Mutawakkil b. Abī Nahīk entered upon Saʿd', and he mentioned it from Saʿd, from the Prophet ﷺ, raised (marfūʿ). ʿAbd al-Razzāq said, from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAṭāʾ: ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr al-Qārī and al-Mutawakkil b. Abī Nahīk entered upon Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ, and Saʿd said the like, raised. Muḥammad b. Rabīʿah said, from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ. Mindal said, from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAṭāʾ, from the Prophet ﷺ, as a mursal. Ḥamzah al-Naṣībī, who is Ḥamzah b. Abī Ḥamzah, weak (ḍaʿīf), said, from ʿAmr b. Dīnār, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, from the Prophet ﷺ; this is an error. The correct version is the statement of ʿAmr b. Dīnār and Ibn Jurayj, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from Ibn Abī Nahīk, from Saʿd.
