✧ A man from the Bedouins came to the Prophet ﷺ, believed in him and followed him, and said: “I will emigrate with you.” The Prophet ﷺ instructed his Companions to look after him. When it was the battle of Khaybar – or he said Hunayn – the Messenger of Allah ﷺ acquired some spoils and distributed them, and allotted a share for him. He gave his Companions what he had allotted for him, and the man was tending their riding animals. When he came, they handed it to him. He said: “What is this?” They said: “A share the Prophet ﷺ allotted for you.” He took it and brought it to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “O Muhammad, what is this?” He said: “A share I allotted for you.” He said: “It is not for this that I followed you. I followed you so that I may be shot here,” and he pointed to his throat with an arrow, “and die and enter Paradise.” He ﷺ said: “If you are truthful to Allah, He will be truthful to you.” They waited a little, then they went out to fight the enemy. He was brought back carried, having been struck by an arrow where he had pointed. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Is it he?” They said: “Yes.” He said: “He was truthful to Allah, so He was truthful to him.” Then the Prophet ﷺ shrouded him in the Prophet’s own jubbah, then brought him forward and prayed over him. Among what was heard of his prayer over him was: “O Allah, this is Your servant who went out as an emigrant in Your path and was killed as a martyr, and I am a witness for him.”

✧ He came to the Prophet ﷺ and pledged allegiance to him for emigration, then fell ill. He ﷺ said: “What is the matter with you, O Shaddad?” I said: “I am ill, O Messenger of Allah. If I could drink from the water of Batha, I would recover.” He said: “What prevents you?” I said: “My emigration.” He said: “Go, for you are an emigrant wherever you are.”

✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and took his hand, and it was softer than silk and cooler than snow.

“The wise man is the one who takes account of himself and strives for that which is after death. And the helpless man is the one who follows his own whims then indulges in wishful thinking about Allah.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 4260)

✧ I said, “O Messenger of God, how were you taken on the Night Journey?” He said, “I prayed the evening prayer with my companions in Makkah, delaying it. Then Jibrīl ﷺ came to me with a white riding beast, larger than a donkey and smaller than a mule. He said, ‘Mount.’ It was difficult for me, so he turned it by its ear, then mounted me upon it. It set off moving swiftly with us; its hooves landed wherever its gaze reached. We came to a land with palm trees. He said, ‘Dismount.’ I dismounted. Then he said, ‘Pray.’ I prayed. Then we mounted. He said, ‘Do you know where you prayed?’ I said, ‘God knows best.’ He said, ‘You prayed in Yathrib; you prayed in Ṭībah.’ Then it set off moving swiftly with us; its hooves landed wherever its gaze reached. We came to a white land. He said, ‘Dismount.’ I dismounted. Then he said, ‘Pray.’ I prayed. Then we mounted. He said, ‘Do you know where you prayed?’ I said, ‘God knows best.’ He said, ‘You prayed in Madyan; you prayed at the tree of Mūsā.’ Then it set off moving swiftly with us; its hooves landed wherever its gaze reached. Then we reached a land whose palaces appeared to us. He said, ‘Dismount.’ I dismounted. Then he said, ‘Pray.’ I prayed. He said, ‘Do you know where you prayed?’ I said, ‘God and His Messenger know best.’ He said, ‘You prayed in Bayt Laḥm, where ʿĪsā the Messiah, son of Maryam ﷺ, was born.’ Then he took me until we entered the city from its Yemeni gate. He came to the qiblah of the mosque and tied his mount. We entered the mosque through a gate where the sun inclines. I prayed in the mosque as much as God willed. I was overcome by the most intense thirst I had ever experienced. Then two vessels were brought to me, in one of them milk and in the other honey. They were both sent to me. I balanced between them, then God ﷻ guided me, and I took the milk and drank until it struck my forehead. Before me was an old man leaning on a cushion of his. He said, ‘Your companion has taken the natural disposition; indeed he is guided.’ Then he took me until we came to the valley that is in the city, and behold, Hell was uncovered like carpets. We said, ‘O Messenger of God, how did you find it?’ He said, ‘Like hot bathwater.’ Then he returned with me, and we passed by a caravan of Quraysh at such-and-such a place. They had lost a camel of theirs, and so-and-so had gathered them. I greeted them, and some of them said, ‘This is the voice of Muhammad ﷺ.’ Then I came to my companions before dawn in Makkah. Abu Bakr ؓ came to me and said, ‘O Messenger of God, where were you tonight? I looked for you in your place.’ He said, ‘Do you know that I went to the Aqsa Mosque tonight?’ He said, ‘O Messenger of God, it is a month’s journey; describe it to me.’ Then its image was opened for me, as if I were looking at it. They did not ask me about anything except that I informed them of it. Abu Bakr ؓ said, ‘I bear witness that you are the Messenger of God.’ The polytheists said, ‘Look at Ibn Abī Kabshah, claiming that he came to the Aqsa Mosque tonight.’ He said, ‘Among the signs of what I tell you is that I passed by a caravan of yours at such-and-such a place, led by a gray camel with a black saddlecloth and two black sacks.’ When that day came, the people looked out, and around midday the caravan came led by that same camel described by the Messenger of God ﷺ.”

I acknowledge Your favor upon me, and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive my sins, for none forgives them but You - if he dies that day, he will enter Paradise, and if he dies that night, he will enter Paradise.

✧ Shaybah b. 'Uthman said: When the Prophet ﷺ raided Hunayn, I remembered my father and my uncle, whom 'Ali and Hamzah had killed, and I said: 'Today I will avenge my blood on Muhammad.' I came to him and found al-'Abbas on his right, wearing a white coat of mail that looked like silver, and the dust had settled on it. I said: 'His uncle will not forsake him.' Then I came to his left and found Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith. I said: 'His cousin, and he will not forsake him.' Then I came from behind him and drew closer and closer until there was nothing left but for me to strike him with the sword. Then a flame of fire rose up before me like lightning, and I feared it would burn me, so I retreated backwards. The Prophet ﷺ turned to me and said: 'Come, O Shayb.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his hand on my chest, and Allah extracted the devil from my heart. I raised my eyes to him, and he was dearer to me than my hearing, my sight, and such-and-such. Then he said to me: 'O Shayb, fight the disbelievers.' Then he said: 'O 'Abbas, call out to the Muhajirun who pledged allegiance under the tree and to the Ansar who gave shelter and helped.' I never likened the turning of the Ansar to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ except to cows turning to their calves, until they gathered around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ like a thicket. He said: The spears of the Ansar were more frightening to me for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than the spears of the disbelievers. Then he said: 'O 'Ayyash, hand me some pebbles from the valley.' He said: Allah made the mule understand his words, and it lowered itself until its belly almost touched the ground. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took some pebbles and blew into their faces, saying: 'May the faces be ugly! Ha Mim, they will not be helped.'

✧ Umayyah said to me, 'O Abu Sufyan, shall we go ahead of the caravan and talk?' I said, 'Yes.' So we did, and he said to me, 'O Abu Sufyan, what about 'Utbah b. Rabi'ah?' I said, 'What about 'Utbah b. Rabi'ah?' He said, 'Noble on both sides, who avoids injustices and forbidden things?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'And an elder of high rank?' I said, 'And an elder of high rank.' He said, 'Age and rank have diminished him.' I said to him, 'You lie; he only increases in honor as he increases in age.' He said, 'O Abu Sufyan, this is a word I have not heard anyone say to me since I became a Christian. Do not be hasty with me until I tell you.' I said, 'Proceed.' He said, 'I used to find in my books a prophet who would be sent from this region of ours, and I thought—rather I did not doubt—that I was him. But when I studied with the people of knowledge, he was from Banu 'Abd Manaf. I looked among Banu 'Abd Manaf and found no one suitable for this matter except 'Utbah b. Rabi'ah. When you told me his age, I knew it was not him, since he had passed forty and had not received revelation.' Abu Sufyan said: Time passed, and revelation came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I set out with a group of Quraysh to Yemen for trade and passed by Umayyah b. Abi al-Salt. I said to him, as if mocking, 'O Umayyah, the prophet you were waiting for has emerged.' He said, 'Indeed, it is true, so follow him.' I said, 'What prevents you from following him?' He said, 'Nothing prevents me from following him except shyness before the women of Thaqif. I used to tell them that I was him, and then they would see me following a young man from Banu 'Abd Manaf.' Then Umayyah said, 'And it is as if, O Abu Sufyan, if I oppose him, I will be tied up as a kid is tied until you are brought to him and he judges in your case as he wishes.'

✧ Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out with twelve thousand, comprising the Muhajirun, the Ansar, Ghifar, Aslam, Muzaynah, Juhaynah, and Banu Sulaym, and they led the horses until they encamped at Marr al-Zahran, and Quraysh did not know about them. They sent Abu Sufyan and Hakim b. Hizam to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'Secure for us a guarantee of protection from him, or give him notice of war.' Abu Sufyan b. Harb and Hakim b. Hizam went out and met Budayl b. Warqa', so they took him as a companion. When they were at al-Arak, near Makkah, and that was at nightfall, they saw the tents and the army and heard the neighing of the horses, and that alarmed and frightened them. They said, 'These are Banu Ka'b whom war has stirred up.' Budayl said, 'These are more than Banu Ka'b; their gathering has not reached this extent. Would Hawazin seek pasture in our land? By Allah, we do not recognize this either; this is like the pilgrimage of the people.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent cavalry ahead to seize scouts, and Khuza'ah was on the road, not letting anyone pass. When Abu Sufyan and his companions entered the Muslim camp, the cavalry seized them under cover of night and brought them fearing execution. 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ went to Abu Sufyan and struck his neck, and the people grabbed him and took him out to bring him before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The guards prevented him from reaching the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he feared being killed. Al-'Abbas b. 'Abd al-Muttalib ؓ had been his close friend in the pre-Islamic era, so Abu Sufyan called at the top of his voice, 'Will you take me to 'Abbas?' He came to him and defended him, and asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to hand him over to him. He went among the people in his place, and 'Abbas rode with him under cover of night and moved through the army camp until they all saw him. 'Umar ؓ had said to Abu Sufyan when he struck his neck, 'By Allah, you will not approach the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until you die.' So he sought help from 'Abbas and said, 'I am going to be killed.' 'Abbas protected him from the people so they would not seize him. When he saw the size of the army and their obedience, he said, 'I have never seen a gathering of people like tonight.' 'Abbas saved him from their hands and said, 'You will be killed if you do not submit and bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.' He kept trying to say what 'Abbas commanded him, but his tongue would not obey. So he spent the night with 'Abbas. As for Hakim b. Hizam and Budayl b. Warqa', they entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and accepted Islam, and he began asking them about the people of Makkah. When the call to the dawn prayer was made, the people stirred, and Abu Sufyan was startled and said, 'O 'Abbas, what do they want?' He said, 'They are the Muslims preparing to attend the Prophet ﷺ.' 'Abbas took him out, and when Abu Sufyan saw them passing to the prayer, bowing and prostrating in their prayer, whenever they prostrated he said, 'O 'Abbas, does he not command them to do anything but they do it?' 'Abbas said, 'If he forbade them food and drink, they would obey him.' He said, 'O 'Abbas, then speak to him about your people; does he have any pardon for them?' So 'Abbas took Abu Sufyan and brought him before the Prophet ﷺ. 'Abbas said, 'O Messenger of Allah, this is Abu Sufyan.' Abu Sufyan said, 'O Muhammad, I sought help from my god and sought help from your God. By Allah, I have never met you but you prevailed over me. If my god had been right and your God false, I would have prevailed over you.' Then he bore witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. 'Abbas said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I would like you to permit me to go to your people and warn them of what has come and call them to Allah and His Messenger.' He permitted him. 'Abbas said, 'How should I speak to them, O Messenger of Allah? Make clear to me a guarantee of safety that they can rely on.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Say to them: Whoever bears witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and bears witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and withholds his hand, he is safe. ✧ Then the Messenger of God ﷺ went out with twelve thousand of the Muhājirūn, the Anṣār, Ghifār, Aslam, Muzaynah, Juhaynah, and Banū Sulaym. They led the horses until they camped at Marr al-Ẓahrān, and Quraysh did not know of them. So they sent Abū Sufyān and Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām to the Messenger of God ﷺ, saying, “Obtain for us from him a guarantee of protection, or warn him of war.” Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb and Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām set out and met Budayl b. Warqāʾ and took him as a companion. When they reached al-Arāk near Makkah, at night, they saw the tents and the army and heard the neighing of horses. This alarmed and frightened them, and they said, “These are Banū Kaʿb, stirred up by war.” Budayl said, “These are more than Banū Kaʿb; their mobilization has never reached this extent. Would Hawāzin raid our land? By God, we do not recognize this either. This is like the pilgrimage of the people.” The Messenger of God ﷺ had sent ahead cavalry to seize scouts, and Khuzāʿah were on the road, not letting anyone pass. When Abū Sufyān and his companions entered the Muslim camp, the cavalry seized them under cover of night and brought them in fear of execution. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ rose to Abū Sufyān and struck his neck, and the people seized him and took him to bring him before the Messenger of God ﷺ. The guards prevented him from reaching the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he feared for his life. Al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ؓ had been his close friend in the Jāhiliyyah, so he cried out at the top of his voice, “Will you not direct me to ʿAbbās?” He came to him, defended him, and asked the Messenger of God ﷺ to hand him over to him, and he walked among the people in his place. ʿAbbās mounted him under cover of night and rode with him through the camp until they all saw him. ʿUmar ؓ had said to Abū Sufyān when he struck his neck, “By God, you will not come near the Messenger of God ﷺ until you die.” So he sought ʿAbbās’s help and said, “I am a dead man.” He prevented the people from plundering him. When he saw the size of the army and their obedience, he said, “I have never seen such a gathering for a people as tonight.” ʿAbbās rescued him from their hands and said, “You will be killed if you do not submit and testify that Muḥammad is the Messenger of God.” He kept trying to say what ʿAbbās commanded, but his tongue would not utter it. He spent the night with ʿAbbās. As for Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām and Budayl b. Warqāʾ, they entered upon the Messenger of God ﷺ and embraced Islam, and he asked them about the people of Makkah. When the call to the morning prayer was made, the people stirred, and Abū Sufyān was alarmed and said, “O ʿAbbās, what do they intend?” He said, “They are the Muslims preparing to attend upon the Prophet ﷺ.” ʿAbbās brought him out, and when Abū Sufyān saw them passing to prayer, bowing and prostrating in their prayer whenever he prostrated, he said, “O ʿAbbās, does he not command them to do anything but that they do it?” ʿAbbās said, “If he forbade them food and drink, they would obey him.” He said, “O ʿAbbās, speak to him about your people. Does he have any pardon for them?” ʿAbbās then took Abū Sufyān and brought him before the Prophet ﷺ. ʿAbbās said, “O Messenger of God, this is Abū Sufyān.” Abū Sufyān said, “O Muḥammad, I have sought the aid of my god and sought the aid of your God. By God, I have never met you in battle but that you prevailed over me. If my god had been right and your God false, I would have prevailed over you.” Then he testified that there is no god but God and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of God. ʿAbbās said, “O Messenger of God, I would like you to permit me to go to your people, warn them of what has befallen, and call them to God and His Messenger.” He granted him permission. ʿAbbās said, “How shall I speak to them, O Messenger of God? Explain to me a guarantee of safety they can rely on.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Say to them: Whoever testifies that there is no god but God alone, with no partner, and testifies that Muḥammad is the Messenger of God, and withholds his hand, he is safe. Whoever sits by the Kaʿbah and lays down his weapon, he is safe. Whoever locks his door, he is safe.”

✧ We came as a delegation to Muʿāwiyah ؓ, and among us was Abū Hurayrah ؓ. One of us would prepare food one day and invite the other, and the other would prepare food another day and invite this one. I said, “O Abū Hurayrah, today is my day.” He came before the food was ready, so I said, “O Abū Hurayrah, tell us something you heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ until our food is ready.” He said, “I witnessed the Messenger of God ﷺ on the day of the conquest, and he said, ‘O Abū Hurayrah, call the Anṣār for me.’ I called them, and they came hurrying. He said, ‘Do you see the riffraff of the people?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘When you meet them tomorrow, mow them down completely, then your appointment is at al-Ṣafā.’” He said, “The Messenger of God ﷺ appointed Khālid b. al-Walīd over one of the two flanks and al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām over the other flank ؓ, and he appointed Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ over the infantry in the middle of the valley. When the people came, we met them, and no one advanced but that they struck him down. Victory was granted to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He came and climbed al-Ṣafā, and the Anṣār came and surrounded al-Ṣafā. Abū Sufyān came and said, ‘O Messenger of God, the green of Quraysh has been made lawful. There is no Quraysh after today.’ He said, ‘Whoever locks his door is safe, and whoever throws down his weapon is safe, and whoever enters the house of Abū Sufyān is safe.’”
