✧ Then the Messenger of God ﷺ went out with twelve thousand of the Muhājirūn, the Anṣār, Ghifār, Aslam, Muzaynah, Juhaynah, and Banū Sulaym. They led the horses until they camped at Marr al-Ẓahrān, and Quraysh did not know of them. So they sent Abū Sufyān and Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām to the Messenger of God ﷺ, saying, “Obtain for us from him a guarantee of protection, or warn him of war.” Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb and Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām set out and met Budayl b. Warqāʾ and took him as a companion. When they reached al-Arāk near Makkah, at night, they saw the tents and the army and heard the neighing of horses. This alarmed and frightened them, and they said, “These are Banū Kaʿb, stirred up by war.” Budayl said, “These are more than Banū Kaʿb; their mobilization has never reached this extent. Would Hawāzin raid our land? By God, we do not recognize this either. This is like the pilgrimage of the people.” The Messenger of God ﷺ had sent ahead cavalry to seize scouts, and Khuzāʿah were on the road, not letting anyone pass. When Abū Sufyān and his companions entered the Muslim camp, the cavalry seized them under cover of night and brought them in fear of execution. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ rose to Abū Sufyān and struck his neck, and the people seized him and took him to bring him before the Messenger of God ﷺ. The guards prevented him from reaching the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he feared for his life. Al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ؓ had been his close friend in the Jāhiliyyah, so he cried out at the top of his voice, “Will you not direct me to ʿAbbās?” He came to him, defended him, and asked the Messenger of God ﷺ to hand him over to him, and he walked among the people in his place. ʿAbbās mounted him under cover of night and rode with him through the camp until they all saw him. ʿUmar ؓ had said to Abū Sufyān when he struck his neck, “By God, you will not come near the Messenger of God ﷺ until you die.” So he sought ʿAbbās’s help and said, “I am a dead man.” He prevented the people from plundering him. When he saw the size of the army and their obedience, he said, “I have never seen such a gathering for a people as tonight.” ʿAbbās rescued him from their hands and said, “You will be killed if you do not submit and testify that Muḥammad is the Messenger of God.” He kept trying to say what ʿAbbās commanded, but his tongue would not utter it. He spent the night with ʿAbbās. As for Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām and Budayl b. Warqāʾ, they entered upon the Messenger of God ﷺ and embraced Islam, and he asked them about the people of Makkah. When the call to the morning prayer was made, the people stirred, and Abū Sufyān was alarmed and said, “O ʿAbbās, what do they intend?” He said, “They are the Muslims preparing to attend upon the Prophet ﷺ.” ʿAbbās brought him out, and when Abū Sufyān saw them passing to prayer, bowing and prostrating in their prayer whenever he prostrated, he said, “O ʿAbbās, does he not command them to do anything but that they do it?” ʿAbbās said, “If he forbade them food and drink, they would obey him.” He said, “O ʿAbbās, speak to him about your people. Does he have any pardon for them?” ʿAbbās then took Abū Sufyān and brought him before the Prophet ﷺ. ʿAbbās said, “O Messenger of God, this is Abū Sufyān.” Abū Sufyān said, “O Muḥammad, I have sought the aid of my god and sought the aid of your God. By God, I have never met you in battle but that you prevailed over me. If my god had been right and your God false, I would have prevailed over you.” Then he testified that there is no god but God and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of God. ʿAbbās said, “O Messenger of God, I would like you to permit me to go to your people, warn them of what has befallen, and call them to God and His Messenger.” He granted him permission. ʿAbbās said, “How shall I speak to them, O Messenger of God? Explain to me a guarantee of safety they can rely on.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Say to them: Whoever testifies that there is no god but God alone, with no partner, and testifies that Muḥammad is the Messenger of God, and withholds his hand, he is safe. Whoever sits by the Kaʿbah and lays down his weapon, he is safe. Whoever locks his door, he is safe.”
