✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ after he had finished with the people of Badr, bringing a colt of my mare called al-Qarḥāʾ. I said: O Muhammad, I have brought you the colt of al-Qarḥāʾ so that you may take it. He said: “I have no need for it, but if you wish, I can give you in exchange for it the select coats of mail from Badr.” I said: I would not exchange it today for anything else. He said: “I have no need for it.” Then he said: “O Dhū al-Jawshan, will you not become a Muslim, so that you may be among the first of this affair?” I said: No. He said: “Why?” I said: I have seen your people making light of you. Abu Bakr b. Abi Shaybah said in his narration: making a game of you. He said: “How did the news of their defeats at Badr reach you?” I said: It has reached me. He said: “Would it surprise you?” I said: Yes — only if you gain mastery over the Kaʿbah and settle in it. He said: “Perhaps, if you live, you will see that.” Then he said: “O Bilāl, take the man's saddlebag and provision him with some ʿajwah dates.” When I turned to leave, he said: “Indeed, he is among the best horsemen of Banū ʿĀmir.” By God, I was still with my family at al-Fawr when a rider approached. I said: From where? He said: From Makkah. I said: What have the people done? He said: By God, Muhammad ﷺ has gained mastery over it and settled in it. I said: May my mother be bereft of me! By God, if I had become a Muslim on that day and then asked him for al-Ḥīrah, he would have granted it to me as a fief. Abu Muslim said: Musaddad said: It has reached me from Ibn al-Mubārak that he said: His name was Shuraḥbīl, and he was called Dhū al-Jawshan only because he was prominent in the chest.
