✧ I said, “O Messenger of God, how were you taken on the Night Journey?” He said, “I prayed the evening prayer with my companions in Makkah, delaying it. Then Jibrīl ﷺ came to me with a white riding beast, larger than a donkey and smaller than a mule. He said, ‘Mount.’ It was difficult for me, so he turned it by its ear, then mounted me upon it. It set off moving swiftly with us; its hooves landed wherever its gaze reached. We came to a land with palm trees. He said, ‘Dismount.’ I dismounted. Then he said, ‘Pray.’ I prayed. Then we mounted. He said, ‘Do you know where you prayed?’ I said, ‘God knows best.’ He said, ‘You prayed in Yathrib; you prayed in Ṭībah.’ Then it set off moving swiftly with us; its hooves landed wherever its gaze reached. We came to a white land. He said, ‘Dismount.’ I dismounted. Then he said, ‘Pray.’ I prayed. Then we mounted. He said, ‘Do you know where you prayed?’ I said, ‘God knows best.’ He said, ‘You prayed in Madyan; you prayed at the tree of Mūsā.’ Then it set off moving swiftly with us; its hooves landed wherever its gaze reached. Then we reached a land whose palaces appeared to us. He said, ‘Dismount.’ I dismounted. Then he said, ‘Pray.’ I prayed. He said, ‘Do you know where you prayed?’ I said, ‘God and His Messenger know best.’ He said, ‘You prayed in Bayt Laḥm, where ʿĪsā the Messiah, son of Maryam ﷺ, was born.’ Then he took me until we entered the city from its Yemeni gate. He came to the qiblah of the mosque and tied his mount. We entered the mosque through a gate where the sun inclines. I prayed in the mosque as much as God willed. I was overcome by the most intense thirst I had ever experienced. Then two vessels were brought to me, in one of them milk and in the other honey. They were both sent to me. I balanced between them, then God ﷻ guided me, and I took the milk and drank until it struck my forehead. Before me was an old man leaning on a cushion of his. He said, ‘Your companion has taken the natural disposition; indeed he is guided.’ Then he took me until we came to the valley that is in the city, and behold, Hell was uncovered like carpets. We said, ‘O Messenger of God, how did you find it?’ He said, ‘Like hot bathwater.’ Then he returned with me, and we passed by a caravan of Quraysh at such-and-such a place. They had lost a camel of theirs, and so-and-so had gathered them. I greeted them, and some of them said, ‘This is the voice of Muhammad ﷺ.’ Then I came to my companions before dawn in Makkah. Abu Bakr ؓ came to me and said, ‘O Messenger of God, where were you tonight? I looked for you in your place.’ He said, ‘Do you know that I went to the Aqsa Mosque tonight?’ He said, ‘O Messenger of God, it is a month’s journey; describe it to me.’ Then its image was opened for me, as if I were looking at it. They did not ask me about anything except that I informed them of it. Abu Bakr ؓ said, ‘I bear witness that you are the Messenger of God.’ The polytheists said, ‘Look at Ibn Abī Kabshah, claiming that he came to the Aqsa Mosque tonight.’ He said, ‘Among the signs of what I tell you is that I passed by a caravan of yours at such-and-such a place, led by a gray camel with a black saddlecloth and two black sacks.’ When that day came, the people looked out, and around midday the caravan came led by that same camel described by the Messenger of God ﷺ.”
