48. Grave Importance and Fear
al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8676Sahih
«إِنَّ طَرْفَ صَاحِبِ الصُّورِ مُذْ وُكِّلَ بِهِ مُسْتَعِدٌّ يَنْظُرُ نَحْوَ الْعَرْشِ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يُؤْمَرَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَرْتَدَّ إِلَيْهِ طَرْفُهُ كَأَنَّ عَيْنَيْهِ كَوْكَبَانِ دُرِّيَّانِ»
✧ “Indeed, the gaze of the companion of the trumpet, since he was entrusted with it, has been ready, looking toward the Throne, fearing that he will be commanded before his gaze returns to him. His eyes are like two shining stars.”

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "How can I enjoy myself while the bearer of the horn (Angel Israfil) has placed it to his mouth and has bowed his forehead, and he is listening attentively, waiting for when he will be commanded?" The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What should we say, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Say: Allah is sufficient for us and He is the best Disposer of affairs, and in Allah let those who trust, put their trust." This narration is attributed to Abu Sa'eed Atiyyah and is considered weak.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “How can I be at ease when the companion of the horn has put the horn to his mouth, bowed his forehead, and inclined his ear, waiting for when he will be commanded to blow?” We said, “O Messenger of Allah, what should we say?” He said, “Say: Sufficient for us is Allah, and He is the best disposer of affairs; upon Allah we rely.” We have not written it from the hadith of al-A’mash from Abu Salih from Abu Sa’id except with this isnad. Were it not that Abu Yahya al-Taymi is on the route, I would have ruled the hadith as authentic according to the condition of the two Shaykhs. This hadith has an origin from the hadith of Zayd b. Aslam from Ata’ b. Yasar from Abu Sa’id. Abu Yahya is weak.

✧ There is no morning except that two angels call out. One of them says: “O Allah, give the one who spends a replacement,” and the other says: “O Allah, give the one who withholds destruction.” And two angels are entrusted with the trumpet, waiting for when they will be commanded to blow. And two angels call out, one saying: “Woe to men from women,” and the other saying: “Woe to women from men.”

✧ A bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him about the trumpet. He said: “A horn that is blown into.”
al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8681Sahih
✧ “Indeed, among the best of your days is Friday. On it Adam was created, on it he was taken, on it is the blowing of the trumpet, and on it is the thunderbolt. So increase in sending prayers upon me on it, for your prayers are presented to me.” They said, “How are our prayers presented to you when you have decayed?” He said, “Indeed, Allah, exalted is He, has forbidden the earth to consume the bodies of the prophets.”

✧ He went as a delegate to the Prophet ﷺ, and with him was Nahīk ibn ʿĀṣim ibn Mālik ibn al-Muntafiq. He said: We arrived in Madinah at the end of Rajab, and we prayed the dawn prayer with him. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood among the people to deliver a sermon and said: “O people, I have withheld my voice from you for four days so that I might make you hear. Is there any man here whom his people have sent?” They said, “Make known to us what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is saying,” then (they feared) perhaps he might be distracted by his own thoughts or by the talk of his companion, or that the misguided might distract him. “Indeed, I will be asked: Have I conveyed (the message)? So listen and you will live; listen and you will live. Sit down!” So the people sat, while I and my companion remained standing until his heart and gaze were free for us. I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I want to ask you about my need, so do not be hasty with me.” He said, “Ask whatever you wish.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, do you have any knowledge of the unseen?” By Allah, he laughed and nodded his head, and he knew that I was seeking (something) by my slip of the tongue. He said: “Your Lord has reserved the keys of five matters of the unseen; none knows them except Allah,” and he gestured with his hand. I said, “And what are they, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “Knowledge of the time of death: He knows when the death of each of you will be, and you do not know it. And He knows the day of rain: it looks down upon you while you are in distress and fear; and he kept laughing, knowing that your relief was near.” Laqīṭ said: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, we will never be deprived of good from a Lord who laughs.” “And He knows what will be tomorrow: He knows what you will eat tomorrow, and you do not know it. And He knows the Day of the Hour,” and I think he also “mentioned what is in the wombs.”

They will come to Madinah, and when they reach the outskirts of Madinah, they will say, 'Where are the people?' They will see no one. One of them will say, 'The people are in their houses.' They will enter the houses, and there is no one in them, and on the beds are foxes and cats. They will say, 'Where are the people?' One of them will say, 'The people are in the mosque.' They will come to the mosque and find no one. They will say, 'Where are the people?' One of them will say, 'The people are in the market; the markets have occupied them.' They will go out until they come to the markets and find no one in them. They will proceed until they come to the mountain pass, and there are two angels upon it. ✧ When the verse {O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the [final] Hour is a terrible thing} [al-Hajj: 1] was revealed upon the Prophet ﷺ while he was on a journey, he raised his voice with it until his companions gathered around him. He said, "Do you know what day this is? The day when Allah will say to Adam, 'O Adam, arise and send forth the delegation of the Fire: from every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine.'" That weighed heavily upon the Muslims. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Be moderate, draw near, and rejoice. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, you are among the nations only like a mole on the flank of a camel or a spot on the foreleg of a beast. With you are two creations that, whenever they are with anything, they increase it greatly: Ya'juj and Ma'juj, and those who have perished from the disbelievers of jinn and mankind." This is a sound chain according to the conditions of the two shaykhs, but they did not include it.

✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and the pace of travel had spread his companions out. He raised his voice with these two verses: {O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the [final] Hour is a terrible thing} [al-Hajj: 1]. Abu Musa recited up to His saying {but the punishment of Allah is severe} [al-Hajj: 2]. When his companions heard that, they urged their mounts on, knowing that he was about to say something. He said, "Do you know what day that is?" They said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "That is the day when Adam will be called, and his Lord will call him, saying: 'O Adam, send forth the delegation of the Fire: from every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine to the Fire and one to Paradise.'" His companions were struck silent, until no one showed even a smile. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw what had befallen his companions, he said, "Work and rejoice. By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, you are with two creations that, whenever they are with anything, they increase it greatly: Ya'juj and Ma'juj, and those who have perished from the children of Adam and the children of Iblis." Some of what the people were feeling was relieved. Then he said, "Work and rejoice. By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, you are among people only like a mole on the flank of a camel or a spot on the foreleg of a beast." This is how Sa'id b. He said, 'From every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine to the Fire and one to Paradise.'" That distressed the people, and gloom and sorrow fell upon them. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I hope that you will be half of the people of Paradise." So they rejoiced. Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Work and rejoice, for you are between two creations that were never with anyone except that they outnumbered them: Ya'juj and Ma'juj. ✧ We were sitting in the mosque on Friday when he said, "Indeed, the greatest day of this world is Friday. On it Adam was created, and on it the Hour will be established. The most honored of Allah's creation to Allah is Abu al-Qasim ﷺ." [The narrator] said: I said, "May Allah have mercy on you. Then where are the angels?" He said: He looked at me and laughed, then said, "O son of my brother, do you know what the angels are? The angels are merely a creation like the creation of the heavens, the earth, the winds, the clouds, and the rest of creation that does not disobey Allah in anything. Paradise is in the heaven, and the Fire is in the earth. When the Day of Resurrection comes, Allah will raise the creation nation by nation and prophet by prophet until Ahmad and his nation are the last of the nations as a center." He said: Then he will stand, and his nation will follow him, its righteous and its wicked. Then the bridge of Hell will be placed, and they will take the bridge. Allah will obliterate the sights of His enemies, and they will fall into it from the left and the right. The Prophet ﷺ and the righteous with him will be saved. The angels will meet them and show them their dwellings in Paradise—on your right, on your left—until he reaches his Lord, exalted is He. Then a chair will be placed for him on the right of Allah, exalted is He. Then a caller will call out, "Where is 'Isa and his nation?" Then he will stand, and his nation will follow him, its righteous and its wicked. They will take the bridge. Allah will obliterate the sights of His enemies, and they will fall into it from the left and the right. The Prophet ﷺ and the righteous with him will be saved. The angels will meet them and show them their dwellings in Paradise—on your right, on your left—until he reaches his Lord. Then a chair will be placed for him on the other side. He said: Then the prophets and nations will follow them until the last of them is Nuh—may Allah have mercy on Nuh.

✧ The earth will be stretched out on the Day of Resurrection, stretched out for the greatness of the Most Merciful. Then no human being among the children of Adam will have except the place of his two feet. Then I will be called as the first of mankind, and I will fall down prostrating. Then permission will be given to me, and I will stand and say, 'O Lord.'

Among them, there will be those whose sweat will reach their ankles, and others will have it reach their knees, while some will have it reach their waist. There will also be those whose sweat will reach their shoulders, and some will have it reach their necks. And there will be those whose whole body will be covered in sweat." Then the Prophet ﷺ pointed with his hand and folded it, placing it under his chin. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ doing this. He further stated, "And there will be those whose sweat will cover their entire body, and he motioned with his hand above his head indicating that the sweat will reach above their heads. However, the head will not be affected by the sweat, and the moisture will circulate around it, moving clockwise and counter-clockwise."

✧ The registers are three: a register that Allah will not forgive anything of, a register that Allah will not pay any attention to, and a register that Allah will not leave anything of. As for the register that Allah will not forgive anything of, it is associating partners with Allah ﷻ. ✧ We conversed one night in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and spoke at length. He said: Then we returned to our houses. When morning came, we went to the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: "The prophets were presented to me tonight with their followers from their communities. A prophet would come with three of his people, a prophet with a band, a prophet with a small group, and a prophet with no one from his people, until Moses b. ʿImrān came to me in a large crowd of the Children of Israel. When I saw them, they impressed me, and I said: 'O Lord, who are these?' He said: 'This is your brother Moses b. ʿImrān and those who followed him from the Children of Israel.' He said: I said: 'O Lord, where is my community?' It was said to me: 'Look to your right.' And behold, the hills—the hills of Makkah—were blackened with the faces of men. I said: 'O Lord, who are these?' He said: 'Your community.' He said: It was said to me: 'Are you pleased?' I said: 'O Lord, I am pleased.' He said: Then it was said to me: 'Indeed, with these are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning.' He said: ʿUkkāsha b. Miḥṣan, the brother of Banū Asad b. Khuzayma, stood up and said: 'O Prophet of Allah, supplicate your Lord to make me one of them.' He said: 'O Allah, make him one of them.' Then another man stood up and said: 'O Prophet of Allah, supplicate your Lord to make me one of them.' He said: 'ʿUkkāsha has preceded you to it.' He said: Then the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: 'May my father and mother be your ransom. If you are able to be among the seventy, then be so. If you are unable and fall short, then be among the people of the hills. If you are unable and fall short, then be among the people of the horizon, for I saw there many people jostling.' He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Indeed, I hope that those who follow me from my community will be a quarter of the people of Paradise.' He said: We said 'Allāhu akbar.' Then he said: 'Indeed, I hope that you will be a third.' We said 'Allāhu akbar.' Then he said: 'Indeed, I hope that you will be half.' We said 'Allāhu akbar.' He said: Then the Prophet of Allah ﷺ recited: {A multitude from the former generations and a multitude from the later generations} [al-Wāqiʿa 40]. He said: The Muslims went back to discussing these seventy, and they said: 'We think they are people who were born in Islam and continued acting upon it until they died upon it.' Their talk reached the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, and he said: 'It is not so; rather, they are those who do not seek ruqya, do not cauterize, do not take omens, and upon their Lord they rely.'"

The people will pass, and some of them will pass like lightning, some like a lean horse, some will run, some will walk, some will crawl, and the angels will be on its two sides saying: 'O Allah, grant safety, grant safety,' and the hooks will snatch them. He said: As for its inhabitants who are its rightful inhabitants, they will neither die nor live. And as for some people who are taken for sins and errors, they will burn and become charcoal, then they will be taken in groups, groups, and thrown onto a river of Paradise, and they will sprout as a seed sprouts in the silt of a flood. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Have you seen the ṣabghāʾ (a plant)? Then after that permission is given for them and they enter Paradise.' Abu Sa'id said: One of them will be given the like of the world. He said: And on the ṣirāṭ there are three trees, and the last one to exit the Fire will be on its edge. He will say: 'O Lord, bring me near to this tree so that I may be in its shade and eat from its fruit.' ✧ A man will surely take the hand of his father on the Day of Resurrection, and the Fire will surely cut it, intending to enter him into Paradise. He said: Then it will be called out: 'Indeed, Paradise will not be entered by a polytheist. Verily, Allah has forbidden Paradise to every polytheist.' He said: Then he will say: 'O Lord, my father,' so he will be turned into an ugly form and a foul smell, and he will leave him. He said: The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ thought that it was Ibrāhīm ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not add anything to them beyond that.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah will gather the people, and the believers will stand when Paradise is brought near. They will come to Adam ﷺ and say, "O our father, open Paradise for us." He will say, "Did anything expel you from Paradise except the error of your father Adam? I am not the one for that. Go to Ibrahim, the close friend of Allah." They will come to Ibrahim, and Ibrahim will say, "I am not the one for that. I was only a friend from behind a veil. Go to the Prophet Musa, whom Allah spoke to directly." They will come to Musa, and he will say, "I am not the one for that. Go to the Word of Allah and His Spirit, 'Isa." 'Isa will say, "I am not the one for that." They will come to Muhammad ﷺ, and he will stand and permission will be given to him, and the trust and the ties of kinship will be sent with him, and they will stand on the right and left of the bridge. Then the first of you will pass like lightning. I said, "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, what is the passing of lightning?" He said, "Have you not seen how lightning passes and returns in the blink of an eye? Then like the passing of the wind, and the passing of birds, and the speed of mounts. Their deeds will carry them, and your Prophet will be standing on the bridge saying, 'My Lord, grant safety, grant safety.'" He said, "Until people's deeds fall short, until a man comes and cannot pass except by crawling." He said, "And on the two edges of the bridge there are hooks suspended, commanded to seize those they are ordered to seize. Some will be scratched but saved, and some will be piled into the Fire. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Abu Hurayrah, the depth of Hell is seventy autumns."

✧ Indeed, the earths: between each earth and the one that follows it is a distance of five hundred years' journey. The uppermost of them is on the back of a fish whose two ends meet in the sky. The fish is on a rock, and the rock is in the hand of an angel. The second is the place of the wind's subjection. When Allah willed to destroy 'Ad, He commanded the keeper of the wind to send upon them a wind to destroy 'Ad. He said, "O Lord, shall I send upon them a wind the size of a bull's nostril?" The Compeller, Blessed and Exalted, said to him, "Then it would suffice the earth and whoever is on it, but send upon them the size of a ring." This is the one about which Allah ﷻ said in His Mighty Book: {It spared nothing that it came upon, but made it like decayed bones} [Al-Dhariyat 42]. The third contains the stones of Hell. The fourth contains the brimstone of Hell. They said, "O Messenger of Allah, does the Fire have brimstone?" He said, "Yes, by the One in whose hand is my soul, in it there are valleys of brimstone. If the firmly rooted mountains were sent into it, they would melt. The fifth contains the serpents of Hell. Their mouths are like valleys. They bite the disbeliever with a bite, and no flesh remains on his bones. The sixth contains the scorpions of Hell. The smallest scorpion among them is like saddled mules. It strikes the disbeliever with a strike, and its strike makes him forget the heat of Hell. The seventh is Saqar, and in it is Iblis, shackled in iron, one hand before him and one hand behind him. When Allah wills to release him for whatever He wills of His servants, He releases him."

✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Prophet of Allah, I did not come to you until I had left behind more than these—meaning the two hands altogether—and I do not come to your religion nor to you, and I was a man who understood nothing except what Allah and His Messenger taught me. So I ask you by the Face of Allah: with what did our Lord send you? He said: “With Islam.” He said: I said: O Prophet of Allah, and what is the sign of Islam? He said: “That you say, ‘I have submitted my face to Allah,’ and you establish prayer and give zakah. Every Muslim is sacred to another Muslim; they are brothers, becoming so. Allah does not accept from a Muslim who associates others after having submitted any deed until he separates from the polytheists to the Muslims. What is wrong with me, holding you by your waist-wrappers away from the Fire? Verily, my Lord is calling me, and indeed He will ask me: ‘Did you convey to My servants?’ And I will say: ‘My Lord, I have conveyed to them.’ So let those present among you convey to those absent. Then you will be called with the fronts of your mouths muzzled with the fidam. Then the first thing to become clear of one of you will be his thigh and his palm.” He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, this is our religion, and where is what you perfect with your hand?

We saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reaching for something; he kept reaching for it, and he stepped back, and the people stepped back. Then he stepped back a second time, and the people stepped back. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, we saw you do something today that you did not use to do in prayer." He said, "Paradise with its splendor and radiance was presented to me, and I reached for a bunch of its grapes. Had I taken it, those between heaven and earth would have eaten of it without diminishing it, but it was withheld from me. Then the Fire was presented to me, and when I felt its scorching heat, I stepped back from it. Most of those whom I saw in it were women: if they are entrusted, they divulge; if they ask, they are importunate; if they are asked, they are stingy; and if they are given, they do not give thanks.
✧ Regarding His saying, may He be exalted: {And indeed, a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of those which you count} [al-Hajj 47], he said: “Who are you?” The man mentioned that he was from such-and-such. Ibn Abbas said: “Then what about a day whose measure is fifty thousand years?” The man said: “May Allah have mercy on you. I only asked you so that you would tell us.” Ibn Abbas said: “Two days that Allah, may He be exalted, mentioned in His Book; Allah knows best about them. He disliked speaking about Allah's Book without knowledge.”
