حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلْمَانَ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ الْفَقِيهُ بِبَغْدَادَ ثَنَا هِلَالُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ الرَّقِّيُّ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي أُنَيْسَةَ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ

لَقَدْ عِشْنَا بُرْهَةً مَنْ دَهْرٍ وَمَا نَرَى هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ نَزَلَتْ إِلَّا فِينَا وَفِي أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ {إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُمْ مَيِّتُونَ ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عِنْدَ رَبِّكُمْ تَخْتَصِمُونَ} [الزمر 31] فَقُلْتُ «نَخْتَصِمُ أَمَّا نَحْنُ فَلَا نَعْبُدُ إِلَّا اللَّهَ وَأَمَّا دِينُنَا فَالْإِسْلَامُ وَأَمَّا كِتَابُنَا فَالْقُرْآنُ فَلَا نُغَيِّرُ وَلَا نُحَرِّفُ أَبَدًا وَأَمَّا قِبْلَتُنَا فَالْكَعْبِةُ وَأَمَّا حَرَامُنَا أَوْ حَرَمُنَا فَوَاحِدٌ وَأَمَّا نَبِيُّنَا فَمُحَمَّدٌ ﷺ فَكَيْفَ نَخْتَصِمُ حَتَّى كَفَحَ بَعْضُنَا وُجُوهَ بَعْضٍ بِالسُّيُوفِ فَعَرَفْتُ أَنَّهَا نَزَلَتْ فِينَا»

✧ We lived for a period of time, and we did not think that this verse was revealed except about us and about the People of the Book: {Indeed, you are to die, and indeed they are to die. Then indeed you, on the Day of Resurrection, before your Lord will dispute} [al-Zumar:31]. I said, "We dispute? As for us, we worship none but Allah; as for our religion, it is Islam; as for our Book, it is the Qur'an—we will never alter or distort it; as for our qiblah, it is the Ka'bah; as for our sacred things or sanctity, it is one; and as for our prophet, he is Muhammad ﷺ. So how would we dispute?" Until some of us struck the faces of others with swords, and I knew that it was revealed about us.
