سَأَلْتُ رَبِّي - عَزَّ وَجَلَّ - ثَلَاثَ خِصَالٍ فَأَعْطَانِي اثْنَتَيْنِ وَمَنَعَنِي وَاحِدَةً. سَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُسَلِّطَ عَلَى أُمَّتِي عَدُوًّا مِنْ غَيْرِهِمْ فَأَعْطَانِيهَا، وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يَقْتُلَ أُمَّتِي بِالسَّنَةِ فَأَعْطَانِيهَا، وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يَلْبِسَهُمْ شِيَعًا فَأَبَى عَلَيَّ
✧ I asked my Lord, mighty and majestic, for three qualities, and He granted me two and withheld one. I asked Him not to set an enemy upon my ummah from other than themselves, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to destroy my ummah by drought, and He granted me that. And I asked Him not to make them into factions, but He refused me.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَلَّمَ رَجُلًا أَنْ يَقُولَ إِذَا أَخَذَ مَضْجَعَهُ: اللَّهُمَّ، وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ، وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ، وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ، وَأَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي إِلَيْكَ؛ رَهْبَةً مِنْكَ وَرَغْبَةً إِلَيْكَ، وَلَا مَلْجَأَ وَلَا مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ، آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ، وَنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ، فَإِنْ مَاتَ مِنْ لَيْلَتِهِ غُفِرَ لَهُ
✧ The Prophet ﷺ taught a man to say when he went to bed: "O Allah, I have turned my face to You, and I have entrusted my back to You, and I have consigned my affair to You, and I have surrendered myself to You; out of fear of You and desire for You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You revealed, and Your Prophet whom You sent. If he dies that night, he will be forgiven."

أَنَّ عِيَاضَ بْنَ حِمَارٍ الْمُجَاشِعِيَّ النَّهْشَلِيَّ ؓ أَهْدَى لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَرَسًا قَبْلَ أَنْ يُسْلِمَ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أَكْرَهُ زَبَدَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ
✧ Iyad b. Himar al-Mujashi'i al-Nahshali ؓ gave a horse as a gift to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ before he became Muslim, and he said: "I dislike the gift of the polytheists."

أُمَّتِي أُمَّةٌ مَرْحُومَةٌ، جَعَلَ اللهُ عَذَابَهَا بِأَيْدِيهَا، فَإِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ دُفِعَ إِلَى كُلِّ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْأَدْيَانِ فَكَانَ فِدَاءَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ
✧ My ummah is a community shown mercy. Allah placed its punishment in its own hands. So when the Day of Resurrection comes, to every Muslim man will be given a man from the people of other religions, and he will be his ransom from the Fire.

✧ Remain upright, though you will not be able to do so completely. Know that the best of your deeds is prayer, and no one maintains wudu except a believer.

أَشْرَفُ الْإِيمَانِ أَنْ يَأْمَنَكَ النَّاسُ، وَأَشْرَفُ الْإِسْلَامِ أَنْ يَسْلَمَ النَّاسُ مِنْ لِسَانِكَ وَيَدِكَ، وَأَشْرَفُ الْهِجْرَةِ أَنْ تَهْجُرَ السَّيِّئَاتِ، وَأَشْرَفُ الْجِهَادِ أَنْ تُقْتَلَ وَتُعْقَرَ فَرَسُكَ
✧ The noblest part of faith is that people feel safe from you. The noblest part of Islam is that people are safe from your tongue and hand. The noblest migration is that you abandon sins. The noblest jihad is that you are killed and your horse is hamstrung.

كُنْتُ رِدْفَ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، إِذْ مَرَّ بِرَاعٍ يَزْمِرُ، فَضَرَبَ وَجْهَ النَّاقَةِ، وَصَرَفَهَا عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ. وَوَضَعَ أُصْبَعَيْهِ فِي أُذُنَيْهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: أَتَسْمَعُ أَتَسْمَعُ ؟ حَتَّى انْقَطَعَ الصَّوْتُ، فَقُلْتُ: لَا أَسْمَعُ، فَرَدَّهَا إِلَى الطَّرِيقِ. قَالَ: هَكَذَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَفْعَلُ
✧ I was riding behind Ibn Umar when he passed by a shepherd playing a reed pipe. He struck the face of the camel and turned it away from the road. He put his fingers in his ears and said: "Do you hear it? Do you hear it?" until the sound stopped. I said: "I do not hear it." Then he returned it to the road. He said: "This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do."

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى تَمِيمٍ الدَّارِيِّ وَهُوَ أَمِيرٌ عَلَى بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ، وَهُوَ يُنَقِّي لِفَرَسِهِ شَعِيرًا، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: أَيُّهَا الْأَمِيرُ، أَمَا كَانَ لَكَ مَنْ يَكْفِيكَ هَذَا ؟ فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ نَقَّى لِفَرَسِهِ شَعِيرًا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ، ثُمَّ قَامَ بِهِ حَتَّى يُعَلِّقَهُ عَلَيْهِ كَتَبَ اللهُ لَهُ بِكُلِّ شَعِيرَةٍ حَسَنَةً
✧ I entered upon Tamim al-Dari while he was governor of Jerusalem, and he was cleaning barley for his horse. I said to him, 'O governor, was there no one to suffice you from this?' He said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever cleans barley for his horse in the path of Allah, then stands with it until he hangs it upon it, Allah records for him for every grain a good deed.'

✧ A woman came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'I have given birth to a boy and named him Muhammad and gave him the kunya Abu al-Qasim. It was mentioned to me that you dislike that.' He ﷺ said: 'What is it that made my name lawful and my kunya forbidden? And what is it that made my kunya forbidden and my name lawful?'

✧ Jibril said to me: Give glad tidings to Khadijah of a house in Paradise made of hollow pearls, with no noise in it and no fatigue.

✧ Preemption applies in every co-owned share, whether in a house or a walled garden; it is not lawful for him to sell it until he notifies his partner, who may then take it or leave it.

قَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ: مَا نَدِمْتُ عَلَى شَيْءٍ مَا نَدِمْتُ عَلَى أَنِّي لَمْ أَسْأَلْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ الرِّيحِ. قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ: فَقُلْتُ: قَدْ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْهَا، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، الرِّيحُ مِمَّ هِيَ ؟ فَقَالَ: مِنْ رَوْحِ اللهِ يَبْعَثُهَا بِالرَّحْمَةِ، وَيَبْعَثُهَا بِالْعَذَابِ
✧ Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ said: I have never regretted anything as much as I regret not asking the Messenger of God ﷺ about the wind. Abu Hurayrah said: I asked him about it: O Messenger of God, what is the wind? He said: It is from the breath of God; He sends it with mercy and He sends it with punishment.

✧ I was sitting with the Messenger of God ﷺ when a man came who had performed ablution but had missed a spot on his foot that the water did not reach. The Prophet ﷺ said: Go and complete your ablution. So he did.

✧ Jafar b. Abi Talib returned to the Messenger of God ﷺ from the land of Abyssinia, and the Messenger of God ﷺ kissed him between his eyes and said: I do not know whether I am happier at Jafar's return or at the conquest of Khaybar.

✧ Whoever eats seven ajwah dates from the dates of al-Aliyah in the morning, no poison or magic will harm him until evening.

جِيءَ بِرُؤُوسِ الْخَوَارِجِ، فَنُصِبَتْ عَلَى دَرَجِ مَسْجِدِ دِمَشْقَ، فَجَعَلَ النَّاسُ يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَيْهَا، وَخَرَجْتُ أَنَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهَا، فَجَاءَ أَبُو أُمَامَةَ عَلَى حِمَارٍ وَعَلَيْهِ قَمِيصٌ سُنْبُلَانِيُّ، فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِمْ، فَقَالَ: مَا صَنَعَ الشَّيْطَانُ بِهَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ ؟ يَقُولُهَا ثَلَاثًا، شَرُّ قَتْلَى تَحْتَ ظِلِّ السَّمَاءِ هَؤُلَاءِ، خَيْرُ قَتْلَى تَحْتَ ظِلِّ السَّمَاءِ مَنْ قَتَلَهُ هَؤُلَاءِ، هَؤُلَاءِ كِلَابُ النَّارِ، يَقُولُهَا ثَلَاثًا - ثُمَّ بَكَى، ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ - قَالَ أَبُو غَالِبٍ: فَاتَّبَعْتُهُ، فَقُلْتُ: سَمِعْتُكَ تَقُولُ قَوْلًا قَبْلُ، فَأَنْتَ قُلْتَهُ ؟ فَقَالَ: سُبْحَانَ اللهِ، إِنِّي إِذًا لَجَرِيءٌ، بَلْ سَمِعْتُ ذَلِكَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِرَارًا، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: رَأَيْتُكَ بَكَيْتَ، فَقَالَ: رَحْمَةً لَهُمْ كَانُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْإِسْلَامِ مَرَّةً، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي: أَمَا تَقْرَأُ ؟ قُلْتُ: بَلَى. قَالَ: فَاقْرَأْ مِنْ آلِ عِمْرَانَ، فَقَرَأْتُ، فَقَالَ: أَمَا تَسْمَعُ قَوْلَ اللهِ - عَزَّ وَجَلَّ -: فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ زَيْغٌ فَيَتَّبِعُونَ مَا تَشَابَهَ مِنْهُ كَانَ فِي قُلُوبِ هَؤُلَاءِ زَيْغٌ، فَزِيغَ بِهِمُ، اقْرَأْ عِنْدَ رَأْسِ الْمِائَةِ، فَقَرَأْتُ حَتَّى إِذَا بَلَغْتُ: يَوْمَ تَبْيَضُّ وُجُوهٌ وَتَسْوَدُّ وُجُوهٌ فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ اسْوَدَّتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ أَكَفَرْتُمْ بَعْدَ إِيمَانِكُمْ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا أَبَا أُمَامَةَ، أَهُمْ هَؤُلَاءِ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ هُمْ هَؤُلَاءِ
✧ The heads of the Khawarij were brought and set up on the steps of the mosque of Damascus. People began to look at them, and I went out to look at them. Abu Umamah came on a donkey wearing a sunbulani shirt, looked at them, and said: What has Satan done to this community? He said it three times. These are the worst slain under the sky; the best slain under the sky are those whom they killed. These are the dogs of Hell—he said it three times—then he wept and left. Abu Ghalib said: I followed him and said: I heard you say something; did you say it? He said: Glory be to God! I would be bold indeed. Rather I heard it from the Messenger of God ﷺ many times. I said to him: I saw you weep. He said: Out of mercy for them; they were once among the people of Islam. Then he said to me: Do you not recite? I said: Yes. He said: Recite from Al Imran, so I recited. He said: Do you not hear the word of God, Mighty and Majestic: "As for those in whose hearts is deviation, they follow what is ambiguous of it." There was deviation in the hearts of these, and they were led astray. Recite at the beginning of the hundredth verse, so I recited until I reached: "On the day when faces turn white and faces turn black. As for those whose faces turn black: Did you disbelieve after your belief?" I said: O Abu Umamah, are they these? He said: Yes, they are these.

✧ Whoever visits a sick person and says: I ask God the Almighty, Lord of the Mighty Throne, to heal you, seven times—that person will be healed, unless his appointed time has come.

✧ Whoever eats of these green vegetables: garlic, onions, leeks, and radishes, let him not approach our mosque, for the angels are harmed by what harms the children of Adam.

مَنْ أَصَابَ ذَنْبًا فِي الدُّنْيَا فَعُوقِبَ بِهِ، فَاللهُ - جَلَّ ذِكْرُهُ - أَعْدَلُ مِنْ أَنْ يُثَنِّيَ عُقُوبَتَهُ عَلَى عَبْدِهِ فِي الْآخِرَةِ، وَمَنْ أَصَابَ ذَنْبًا فِي الدُّنْيَا فَسَتَرَهُ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَفَا عَنْهُ، فَاللهُ - عَزَّ وَجَلَّ - أَجْوَدُ مِنْ أَنْ يَعُودَ فِي شَيْءٍ قَدْ عَفَا عَنْهُ وَسَتَرَهُ
✧ Whoever commits a sin in this world and is punished for it, Allah, mighty is His remembrance, is more just than to repeat his punishment upon His servant in the Hereafter. And whoever commits a sin in this world and Allah conceals it for him and pardons him, Allah, mighty and majestic is He, is more generous than to return to something He has already pardoned and concealed.

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، وَاللهِ إِنَّكَ لَأَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ نَفْسِي، وَإِنَّكَ لَأَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَهْلِي وَمَالِي، وَأَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ وَلَدِي، وَإِنِّي لَأَكُونُ فِي الْبَيْتِ فَأَذْكُرُكَ، فَمَا أَصْبِرُ حَتَّى آتِيَكَ، فَأَنْظُرَ إِلَيْكَ، وَإِذَا ذَكَرْتُ مَوْتِي وَمَوْتَكَ عَرَفْتُ أَنَّكَ إِذَا دَخَلْتَ الْجَنَّةَ رُفِعْتَ مَعَ النَّبِيِّينَ، وَإِنِّي إِذَا دَخَلْتُ الْجَنَّةَ خَشِيتُ أَنْ لَا أَرَاكَ، فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ شَيْئًا حَتَّى نَزَلَ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ بِهَذِهِ الْآيَةِ: وَمَنْ يُطِعِ اللهَ وَالرَّسُولَ فَأُولَئِكَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ الْآيَةَ
✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Messenger of God, by God, indeed you are dearer to me than my own self, and you are dearer to me than my family and my wealth, and dearer to me than my child, and I am in the house and I remember you, and I cannot bear it until I come to you and look at you. And when I remember my death and your death, I know that when you enter Paradise, you will be raised with the prophets, and when I enter Paradise, I fear that I will not see you. The Prophet ﷺ did not answer him anything until Gabriel ﷺ came down with this verse: 'Whoever obeys God and the Messenger, they will be with those whom God has blessed among the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous,' the verse.

✧ When a daughter is born to a man, Allah — Mighty and Majestic — sends angels who say: Peace be upon you, O people of the house. They surround her with their wings and wipe their hands over her head, and they say: A weak one has come forth from a weak one; the one responsible for her will be aided until the Day of Resurrection.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about found property, and he said: Found property is not lawful. Whoever finds something must announce it. If its owner comes, let him return it to him. If he does not come, let him give it in charity. Then if he comes, let him give him the choice between the reward and what belongs to him.

✧ I asked Anas b. Mālik ؓ: “How do I perform ablution?” He said: “You ask me how to perform ablution, but you do not ask me how I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ perform ablution. I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ perform ablution three times, three times, and he said: ‘Thus has my Lord — Mighty and Majestic — commanded me.’”

✧ The Prophet ﷺ passed by a neighborhood of Banū al-Najjār, and there were young girls beating the duff and saying: “We are singing girls of Banū al-Najjār; how excellent is Muḥammad as a neighbor!” The Prophet ﷺ said: “God knows that my heart loves you.”

✧ I was holding the hand of al-A'mash, and he said: I recited the Quran to Yahya b. Waththab thirty times, each time I recited: 'And shun the filth' [al-Muddaththir 74:5], and likewise Yahya recited it to 'Alqama, and 'Alqama to 'Abd Allah b. Mas'ud, and Ibn Mas'ud to the Prophet ﷺ.

✧ Any man to whom his cousin comes and asks him from his surplus wealth, and he withholds it from him, Allah will withhold His bounty from him on the Day of Resurrection. And whoever withholds surplus water in order to withhold surplus pasture, Allah will withhold His bounty from him on the Day of Resurrection.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِفَاطِمَةَ: نَبِيُّنَا خَيْرُ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ، وَهُوَ أَبُوكِ، وَشَهِيدُنَا خَيْرُ الشُّهَدَاءِ وَهُوَ عَمُّ أَبِيكِ حَمْزَةُ، وَمِنَّا مَنْ لَهُ جَنَاحَانِ يَطِيرُ بِهِمَا فِي الْجَنَّةِ حَيْثُ يَشَاءُ، وَهُوَ ابْنُ عَمِّ أَبِيكِ جَعْفَرٌ، وَمِنَّا سِبْطَا هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ: الْحَسَنُ وَالْحُسَيْنُ وَهُمَا ابْنَاكِ، وَمِنَّا الْمَهْدِيُّ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Fatima: Our Prophet is the best of the prophets, and he is your father. Our martyr is the best of the martyrs, and he is your father's uncle, Hamza. Among us is one who has two wings with which he flies in Paradise wherever he wishes, and he is your father's cousin, Ja'far. Among us are the two grandsons of this community: al-Hasan and al-Husayn, and they are your two sons. And among us is the Mahdi.

فِي قَوْلِهِ - عَزَّ وَجَلَّ -: فَمَنْ عُفِيَ لَهُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ شَيْءٌ فَاتِّبَاعٌ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَأَدَاءٌ إِلَيْهِ بِإِحْسَانٍ، قَالَ: كَانَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ إِذَا قُتِلَ فِيهِمُ الْقَتِيلُ عَمْدًا لَمْ يَحِلَّ لَهُمْ إِلَّا الْقَوَدُ، وَأُحِلَّتْ لَكُمُ الدِّيَةُ، فَأُمِرَ هَذَا أَنْ يَتَّبِعَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ، وَأُمِرَ هَذَا أَنْ يُؤَدِّيَ بِإِحْسَانٍ، فَذَلِكُمْ تَخْفِيفٌ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ.
✧ Regarding His—Mighty and Majestic—saying: 'But if remission is made to someone from his brother, then let there be pursuing with fairness and payment to him with kindness,' he said: The Children of Israel, when someone among them was killed intentionally, nothing was lawful for them except retribution; but the blood money was made lawful for you. So this one was commanded to pursue with fairness, and this one was commanded to pay with kindness. That is a lightening from your Lord.

كُنَّا عِنْدَ عُتْبَةَ أَرْبَعَ نِسْوَةٍ، مَا مِنَّا امْرَأَةٌ إِلَّا وَهِيَ تَجْتَهِدُ فِي الطِّيبِ. لِتَكُونَ أَطْيَبَ مِنْ صَاحِبَتِهَا، وَمَا يَمَسُّ عُتْبَةُ الطِّيبَ إِلَّا يَمَسُّ دُهْنًا يَمْسَحُ بِهِ لِحْيَتَهُ، وَهُوَ أَطْيَبُ رِيحًا مِنَّا، وَكَانَ إِذَا خَرَجَ إِلَى النَّاسِ قَالُوا: مَا شَمِمْنَا رِيحًا أَطْيَبَ مِنْ رِيحِ عُتْبَةَ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ يَوْمًا: إِنَّا لَنَجْتَهِدُ فِي الطِّيبِ، وَلَأَنْتَ أَطْيَبُ مِنَّا رِيحًا، فَمِمَّ ذَاكَ ؟ فَقَالَ: أَخَذَنِي الشَّرَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَشَكَوْتُ ذَلِكَ إِلَيْهِ، فَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَتَجَرَّدَ، فَتَجَرَّدْتُ، وَقَعَدْتُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ، وَأَلْقَيْتُ ثَوْبِي عَلَى فَرْجِي، فَنَفَثَ فِي يَدِهِ عَلَى ظَهْرِي وَبَطْنِي، فَعَقَبَ بِي هَذَا الطِّيبُ مِنْ يَوْمِئِذٍ
✧ We were with Utbah, four women—there was not a woman among us but that she strove with perfume, so that she might be more fragrant than her companion. Utbah did not touch perfume, except that he would touch an oil with which he wiped his beard, and he was more fragrant than us. When he went out among the people, they would say: 'We have never smelled a scent more pleasant than the scent of Utbah.' One day I said to him: 'We strive with perfume, yet you are more fragrant than us—so from what is that?' He said: 'The shara took hold of me during the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ, so I came to him and complained of that to him. He commanded me to strip, so I stripped, sat before him, and cast my garment over my private parts. Then he blew into his hand over my back and belly, and this fragrance has clung to me since that day.'

ذَنْبٌ لَا يُغْفَرُ، وَذَنْبٌ لَا يُتْرَكُ، وَذَنْبٌ يُغْفَرُ، فَأَمَّا الذَّنْبُ الَّذِي لَا يُغْفَرُ فَالْإِشْرَاكُ بِاللهِ، وَأَمَّا الذَّنْبُ الَّذِي لَا يُتْرَكُ فَظُلْمُ الْعِبَادِ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضًا، وَأَمَّا الذَّنْبُ الَّذِي يُغْفَرُ، فَذَنْبُ الْعَبْدِ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ اللهِ تَعَالَى
✧ A sin that is not forgiven, a sin that is not left, and a sin that is forgiven. As for the sin that is not forgiven, it is associating partners with God. As for the sin that is not left, it is the wrongdoing of people against one another. As for the sin that is forgiven, it is a servant's sin between himself and God Most High.

يَدْخُلُ مِنْ أَهْلِ هَذِهِ الْقِبْلَةِ النَّارَ مَنْ لَا يُحْصِي عَدَدَهُمْ إِلَّا اللهُ، بِمَا عَصَوُا اللهَ، وَاجْتَرَؤُوا عَلَى مَعْصِيَتِهِ، وَخَالَفُوا طَاعَتَهُ، فَيُؤْذَنُ لِي فِي الشَّفَاعَةِ، فَأُثْنِي عَلَيْهِ - جَلَّ ذِكْرُهُ - سَاجِدًا كَمَا أُثْنِي عَلَيْهِ قَائِمًا... وَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ. أَقُولُ: وَتَتِمَّتُهُ: "... فَيُقَالُ لِي: ارْفَعْ رَأْسَكَ، وَسَلْ تُعْطَهُ، وَاشْفَعْ تُشَفَّعْ
✧ From the people of this qiblah, those who will enter the Fire are so many that none can count them except God, because they disobeyed God, were audacious in disobeying Him, and opposed obeying Him. Then I will be permitted to intercede, and I will praise Him—glorified be His remembrance—prostrating, just as I praise Him standing... and he mentioned the hadith. I say: And its completion is: '...Then it will be said to me: "Raise your head, ask and you will be given, intercede and you will be granted intercession."'

✧ When God—glorified be His remembrance—wills to create a soul, and the man has intercourse with the woman, his fluid flies into every vein and nerve of hers. Then on the seventh day, God brings before him every vein between him and Adam. Then he recited: 'In whatever form He willed, He assembled you.'

✧ In the time of the Prophet ﷺ, a sinking of the earth was mentioned toward the east. Some of the people said: 'O Messenger of God, will an earth in which there are Muslims be swallowed up?' He said: 'Yes, when most of its inhabitants are wicked.'

✧ Any man who marries a woman for a small or large dower while not intending to give her her due, he deceives her. If he dies without giving her her due, he will meet God on the Day of Resurrection as an adulterer. And any man who takes a loan not intending to repay its owner, deceiving him until he takes his wealth, and then dies without repaying his debt, he will meet God as a thief.

✧ Three types will be given their reward twice: a man of the People of the Book who believed in his prophet, then lived until the Prophet ﷺ and believed in him; a man who had a slave woman, freed her, and then married her; and a slave who fears God and obeys his masters.

أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِرِجَالِكُمْ فِي الْجَنَّةِ ؟ قَالُوا: بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ. فَقَالَ: " النَّبِيُّ فِي الْجَنَّةِ، وَالصِّدِّيقُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ، وَالشَّهِيدُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ، وَالْمَوْلُودُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ، وَالرَّجُلُ يَزُورُ أَخَاهُ فِي نَاحِيَةِ الْمِصْرِ لَا يَزُورُهُ إِلَّا لِلهِ - عَزَّ وَجَلَّ - فِي الْجَنَّةِ "، قَالَ: " أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِنِسَائِكُمْ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ ؟ " قَالُوا: بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ. قَالَ: " كُلُّ وَلُودٍ وَدُودٍ، إِذَا غَضِبَتْ أَوْ أُسِيءَ إِلَيْهَا أَوْ غَضِبَ [ أَيْ: زَوْجُهَا ] قَالَتْ: هَذِهِ يَدِي فِي يَدِكَ لَا أَكْتَحِلُ بِغُمْضٍ حَتَّى تَرْضَى
✧ Shall I inform you of the men among you who will be in Paradise? They said: 'Yes, O Messenger of God.' He said: 'The prophet is in Paradise, the truthful one is in Paradise, the martyr is in Paradise, the newborn is in Paradise, and a man who visits his brother in a quarter of the city, visiting him only for the sake of God, the Mighty and Majestic, is in Paradise.' Then he said: 'Shall I inform you of the women among you who will be in Paradise?' They said: 'Yes, O Messenger of God.' He said: 'Every fertile and loving woman who, when she is angry or wronged or her husband is angry, says: "Here is my hand in your hand; I will not sleep until you are pleased."'

✧ A bedouin came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of God, will our clothes in Paradise be woven by our own hands?' The people laughed. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Why are you laughing? At an ignorant man asking a learned one? No, O bedouin, but they will split open from the fruits of Paradise.'

✧ You burn, you burn; and when you pray Fajr, it washes them away. Then you burn, you burn; and when you pray Zuhr, it washes them away. Then you burn, you burn; and when you pray Asr, it washes them away. Then you burn, you burn; and when you pray Maghrib, it washes them away. Then you burn, you burn; and when you pray Isha, it washes them away. Then you sleep, and nothing is recorded against you until you wake.

✧ I said: O Messenger of God, a man who is the protector of his people and defends his companions — will his share be like the share of others? He said: May your mother lose you, O son of Umm Sa'd! Are you not provided for and given victory except through your weak ones?

لَا تَنَافُسَ بَيْنَكُمْ إِلَّا فِي اثْنَتَيْنِ: رَجُلٌ أَعْطَاهُ اللهُ - عَزَّ وَجَلَّ - الْقُرْآنَ فَهُوَ يَقُومُ بِهِ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ، فَيَتَتَبَّعُ مَا فِيهِ، فَيَقُولُ الرَّجُلُ: لَوْ أَعْطَانِيَ اللهُ مِثْلَ مَا أَعْطَى فُلَانًا، فَأَقُومُ بِهِ مِثْلَ مَا يَقُومُ فُلَانٌ، وَرَجُلٌ أَعْطَاهُ اللهُ مَالًا يُنْفِقُ وَيَتَصَدَّقُ، فَيَقُولُ رَجُلٌ: مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ
✧ There is no envy except in two cases: a man to whom God, Mighty and Majestic, has given the Quran and he stands with it by night and day, following what is in it, so a man says: If only God gave me the like of what He gave so-and-so, I would stand with it as so-and-so stands. And a man to whom God has given wealth and he spends and gives charity, so a man says: something like that.

✧ I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ while two disputants were arguing before him. He said to me: Judge between them. I said: May my father and mother be your ransom, you are more entitled to that. He said: Judge between them. I said: On what basis? He said: Strive; if you are correct, you get ten good deeds, and if you are not correct, you get one good deed.

✧ My father Safwan migrated to the Prophet ﷺ and pledged allegiance to him upon Islam. The Prophet ﷺ extended his hand and wiped over it. Safwan said, 'I love you, O Messenger of God.' The Prophet ﷺ said to him, 'A person is with the one he loves.'

✧ 'Have you considered that if Juhaynah, Muzaynah, Aslam, and Ghifar are better in the sight of God than Asad, Ghatafan, and Banu Amir b. Sa'sa'ah, have they failed and lost?' They said, 'Yes. Indeed, Juhaynah, Muzaynah, Aslam, and Ghifar are better than Asad, Ghatafan, and Banu Amir b. Sa'sa'ah.'

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ وَهُوَ يَأْكُلُ لَحْمَ دَجَاجٍ، فَقَالَ: هَلُمَّ فَكُلْ، فَقُلْتُ: إِنِّي حَلَفْتُ لَا آكُلُ لَحْمَ الدَّجَاجِ، فَقَالَ أَبُو مُوسَى: كُلْ؛ فَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْكُلُ مِنْهُ، وَسَأُنَبِّئُكَ عَنْ يَمِينِكَ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَنَا وَأَصْحَابِي [ وَأَصْحَابٌ لِي ] نَسْتَحْمِلُهُ، فَحَلَفَ أَنْ لَا يَحْمِلَنَا، وَمَا عِنْدَهُ حُمْلَانٌ، فَوَاللهِ مَا بَرِحْنَا حَتَّى أَتَتْهُ قَلَائِصُ غُرُّ الذُّرَى، فَأَمَرَ لَنَا بِحُمْلَانٍ، فَلَمَّا خَرَجْنَا ذَكَرْنَا يَمِينَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَرَجَعْنَا إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: " مَا رَدَّكُمْ ؟ " قُلْنَا: ذَكَرْنَا يَمِينَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، وَخَشِينَا أَنْ تَكُونَ نَسِيتَهَا، فَقَالَ ﷺ: إِنِّي وَاللهِ مَا نَسِيتُهَا، وَلَكِنْ مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ، فَرَأَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا، فَلْيَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ، وَلْيُكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ
✧ I entered upon Abu Musa al-Ash'ari while he was eating chicken meat. He said, "Come and eat." I said, "I have sworn not to eat chicken meat." Abu Musa said, "Eat, for I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ eating it. And I will inform you about your oath: I and some companions of mine came to the Messenger of God ﷺ asking him for mounts. He swore that he would not provide us mounts, and he had no mounts to give. By God, we had not left before some she-camels with white-tipped humps were brought to him, and he ordered mounts for us. When we left, we remembered the oath of the Messenger of God ﷺ, so we returned to him. He said, 'What brought you back?' We said, 'We remembered your oath, O Messenger of God, and feared that you had forgotten it.' He ﷺ said, 'By God, I did not forget it, but whoever swears an oath and then sees something else better than it, let him do that which is better and expiate for his oath.'"

✧ We have seen ourselves recently, when we performed Hajj, we would say: 'Labbayka ta'zīman ilayka 'udhran, hādhī Zubaydun qad atatka qasran, yaqta'na khabtan wa jibālan wa'rā, qad ja'alū al-andād khilwan sufrā.' And we have seen ourselves stopping in the interior of Muhassir, fearing that the jinn might snatch us away. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Withdraw from the interior of 'Urana, for they are your brothers when they submit.' ✧ No one has been given anything after certainty like well-being, and we ask God for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. Indeed, truthfulness and righteousness are in Paradise. Indeed, lying and wickedness are in the Fire.

✧ I witnessed ʿAlī ؓ on the pulpit adjuring the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: 'Whoever heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say on the day of Ghadīr Khumm what he said, let him testify.' Twelve men among them stood up—Abū Hurayrah, Abū Saʿīd, and Anas b. Mālik—and testified that they heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Whoever [O Allah, whoever] I am his mawlā, ʿAlī is his mawlā. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him.'

أَتَيْتُ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ أُعَزِّيهَا عَلَى الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ، فَقَالَتْ: دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَجَلَسَ عَلَى مَنَامَةٍ لَنَا، فَجَاءَتْهُ فَاطِمَةُ - رِضْوَانُ اللهِ وَرَحْمَتُهُ عَلَيْهَا - بِشَيْءٍ وَضَعَتْهُ، فَقَالَ: ادْعِي لِي حَسَنًا وَحُسَيْنًا وَابْنَ عَمِّكِ، فَلَمَّا اجْتَمَعُوا عِنْدَهُ قَالَ لَهُمْ: " هَؤُلَاءِ حَامِيَتِي وَأَهْلُ بَيْتِي، فَأَذْهِبْ عَنْهُمُ الرِّجْسَ وَطَهِّرْهُمْ تَطْهِيرًا
✧ I came to Umm Salamah to offer condolences for al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī. She said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon me and sat on a bed of ours. Fāṭimah— ؓ and have mercy on her—came to him with something and placed it down. He said: 'Call for me Ḥasan, Ḥusayn, and your cousin.' When they gathered with him, he said: 'These are my family and my household. So remove impurity from them and purify them thoroughly.'

مَا أَخْرَجَكُمَا هَذِهِ السَّاعَةَ ؟ فَقَالَا: أَخْرَجَنَا وَاللهِ مَا نَجِدُ فِي بُطُونِنَا مِنْ حَاقِ الْجُوعِ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: أَنَا وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ مَا أَخْرَجَنِي غَيْرُهُ، فَقَامُوا، فَانْطَلَقُوا حَتَّى أَتَوْا بَابَ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، وَكَانَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ ذَكَرَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ طَعَامًا أَوْ لَبَنًا، فَأَبْطَأَ يَوْمَئِذٍ، فَلَمْ يَأْتِ لِحِينِهِ، فَأَطْعَمَهُ أَهْلَهُ، وَانْطَلَقَ إِلَى نَخْلِهِ يَعْمَلُ فِيهِ، فَلَمَّا أَتَوْا بَابَ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ خَرَجَتِ امْرَأَتُهُ، فَقَالَتْ: مَرْحَبًا بِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَبِمَنْ مَعَهُ، فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: فَأَيْنَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ ؟ فَقَالَتْ: يَأْتِيكَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ السَّاعَةَ، فَرَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَبَصُرَ بِهِ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ وَهُوَ يَعْمَلُ فِي نَخْلٍ لَهُ فَجَاءَ يَشْتَدُّ حَتَّى أَدْرَكَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: مَرْحَبًا بِنَبِيِّ اللهِ وَبِمَنْ مَعَهُ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، لَيْسَ بِالْحِينِ الَّذِي كُنْتَ تَجِيئُنِي فِيهِ، فَرَدَّهُ، فَجَاءَ إِلَى عِذْقِ النَّخْلِ، فَقَطَعَهُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: مَا أَرَدْتَ إِلَى هَذَا ؟ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ تَأْكُلَ مِنْ رُطَبِهِ، وَبُسْرِهِ، وَتَمْرِهِ، وَتَذْنُوبِهِ، وَلَأَذْبَحَنَّ لَكَ مَعَ هَذَا، فَقَالَ: إِنْ ذَبَحْتَ، فَلَا تَذْبَحَنَّ ذَاتَ دَرٍّ، فَأَخَذَ عَنَاقًا لَهُ أَوْ جَدْيًا فَذَبَحَهُ، وَقَالَ لِامْرَأَتِهِ: اخْتَبِزِي، وَأَطْبُخُ أَنَا، فَأَنْتِ أَعْلَمُ بِالْخَبْزِ، فَعَمَدَ إِلَى نِصْفِ الْجَدْيِ فَطَبَخَهُ وَشَوَى نِصْفَهُ، فَلَمَّا أُدْرِكَ بِالطَّعَامِ وُضِعَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَصْحَابِهِ، فَأَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْجَدْيِ، فَوَضَعَهُ عَلَى رَغِيفٍ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: يَا أَبَا أَيُّوبَ، أَبْلِغْ بِهَذَا فَاطِمَةَ؛ فَإِنَّهَا لَمْ تُصِبْ مِثْلَ هَذَا مُنْذُ أَيَّامٍ، فَلَمَّا أَكَلُوا وَشَبِعُوا قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: خُبْزٌ، وَلَحْمٌ، وَبُسْرٌ، وَتَمْرٌ، وَرُطَبٌ، وَدَمَعَتْ عَيْنَاهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: هَذَا مِنَ النَّعِيمِ الَّذِي تُسْأَلُونَ عَنْهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ، فَكَبُرَ ذَلِكَ عَلَى أَصْحَابِهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِذَا أَصَبْتُمْ مِثْلَ هَذَا، وَضَرَبْتُمْ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ، فَقُولُوا: بِاسْمِ اللهِ، وَبَرَكَةِ اللهِ، فَإِذَا شَبِعْتُمْ، فَقُولُوا: الْحَمْدُ لِلهِ الَّذِي أَشْبَعَنَا وَأَرْوَانَا وَأَنْعَمَ وَأَفْضَلَ؛ فَإِنَّ هَذَا كَفَافٌ بِهَذَا، وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا يَأْتِي إِلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ مَعْرُوفًا إِلَّا أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُجَازِيَهُ، فَقَالَ لِأَبِي أَيُّوبَ: ائْتِنَا غَدًا، فَلَمْ يَسْمَعْ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تَأْتِيَهُ، فَلَمَّا أَتَاهُ، أَعْطَاهُ وَلِيدَةً، فَقَالَ: يَا أَبَا أَيُّوبَ، اسْتَوْصِ بِهَذِهِ خَيْرًا؛ فَإِنَّا لَمْ نَرَ إِلَّا خَيْرًا مَا دَامَتْ عِنْدَنَا، فَلَمَّا جَاءَ بِهَا أَبُو أَيُّوبَ فَقَالَ: مَا أَجِدُ لِوَصِيَّةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ شَيْئًا خَيْرًا مِنْ أَنْ أُعْتِقَهَا، فَأَعْتَقَهَا. لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ إِلَّا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ مُوسَى.
✧ “What brought you two out at this hour?” They said, “By God, what brought us out was what we feel in our stomachs of the pangs of hunger.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “By the One in whose hand is my soul, nothing other than that brought me out.” So they stood up and set off until they came to the door of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari. Abu Ayyub had mentioned some food or milk to the Messenger of God ﷺ, but that day he was delayed and did not come at his usual time, so his family fed it [to others]. He went off to his palm trees to work among them. When they came to Abu Ayyub’s door, his wife came out and said, “Welcome to the Messenger of God ﷺ and those with him.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said to her, “Where is Abu Ayyub?” She said, “He will come to you, O Prophet of God, this hour.” The Messenger of God ﷺ turned back, and Abu Ayyub caught sight of him while he was working among some palm trees of his. He came hurrying until he caught up with the Messenger of God ﷺ and said, “Welcome to the Prophet of God and those with him.” He said, “O Messenger of God, this is not the time at which you used to come to me,” so he brought him back. He went to a cluster of palm trees and cut it. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him, “What did you intend by this?” He said, “O Messenger of God, I wanted you to eat from its fresh ripe dates, its unripe dates, its dried dates, and its low-hanging stalks, and I will certainly slaughter for you along with this.” He said, “If you slaughter, do not slaughter a milking animal.” So he took a young she-goat or a young he-goat of his and slaughtered it, and said to his wife, “Bake bread, and I will cook. You know better about baking.” He set about half of the kid and cooked it, and roasted half. When the food was ready, it was placed before the Messenger of God ﷺ and his companions. The Messenger of God ﷺ took some of the kid and placed it on a loaf, then said, “O Abu Ayyub, send this to Fatimah; she has not had the like of this for days.” When they ate and were full, the Prophet ﷺ said, “Bread, meat, unripe dates, dried dates, fresh ripe dates,” and his eyes filled with tears. Then he said, “This is part of the bliss about which you will be asked on the Day of Resurrection.” That weighed heavily upon his companions. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “When you obtain the like of this and reach out with your hands, say, ‘In the name of God and by God’s blessing,’ and when you are full, say, ‘Praise be to God who filled us, quenched our thirst, bestowed favor, and excelled’; for this suffices for that.” The Messenger of God ﷺ would not have anyone do him a kindness without wanting to repay him, so he said to Abu Ayyub, “Come to us tomorrow.” He did not hear, so 'Umar said to him, “The Messenger of God ﷺ is telling you to come to him.” When he came to him, he gave him a young slave girl and said, “O Abu Ayyub, treat her well, for we have seen nothing but good as long as she was with us.” When Abu Ayyub brought her, he said, “I find nothing better for the testament of the Messenger of God ﷺ than to manumit her,” so he manumitted her. No one narrated it from 'Abd Allah b. Kaysan except al-Fadl b. Musa.

✧ When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Makkah, he circumambulated the House seven times, then went out from the gate of al-Safa and climbed al-Safa. He said, “We begin with what God began with.” Then he recited, “Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the rites of God.”

✧ There is no prophet and no ruler but that he has two inner circles: an inner circle that commands him to what is right and good and guides him to it, and an inner circle that does not spare any effort to corrupt him. Whoever is protected from the inner circle of corruption has indeed been protected.

✧ I never heard the Messenger of God ﷺ grant a dispensation for any kind of lying except in three cases. The Messenger of God ﷺ used to say, “I do not count them as lying: a man who makes peace between people, intending thereby reconciliation; a man who says something in war; and a man speaking to his wife, or a woman speaking to her husband.”

✧ A man asked the Prophet ﷺ: As for the greeting of peace (salam), I know it, but how is the prayer upon you? So he taught him to say: O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent prayers upon Ibrahim; truly You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. And bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim; truly You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: Recite to me. I said: Should I recite to you when it was revealed to you? He said: "I love to hear it from someone other than myself." So I began and recited Surah al-Nisa' until I reached: "So how will it be when We bring from every nation a witness and We bring you as a witness against these?" His eyes welled up with tears, so I stopped. He said: "Ask, and you will be given."

✧ Regarding His saying – Mighty and Majestic is He –: “Say: I ask of you no reward for it, save affection among the near of kin” [Q 42:23], he said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had no clan of Quraysh but that he had a mother among them, until he had a mother among Hudhayl. So Allah – Mighty and Majestic is He – said: ‘Say: I ask of you no reward for it, except that you safeguard me regarding my relatives, and do not betray me, and do not call me a liar, and do not harm me.’”

✧ The Prophet ﷺ entered the Ka‘bah on the Day of Conquest, and around the Ka‘bah there were three hundred and sixty idols. He began thrusting them with a stick and saying: “The truth has come and falsehood has vanished; indeed falsehood is bound to vanish” [Q 17:81], and they fell on their faces.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Wash him with water and lotus leaves, shroud him in his two garments, do not cover his head, and do not bring perfume near him; for he will be raised on the Day of Resurrection reciting the talbiyah.”

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood at a house in which there were a number of Quraysh. He took hold of the two doorposts and said: “Is there anyone in the house but a Qurayshi?” They said: “No, except a son of a sister of ours.” He said: “The son of a people’s sister is one of them.” Then he said: “This affair will remain with Quraysh as long as, when mercy is asked of them, they show mercy; when they judge, they are just; and when they distribute, they are equitable. Whoever among them does not do that, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people.”

أَتَى رَجُلٌ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أَشْتَهِي الْجِهَادَ وَلَا أَقْدِرُ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ: فَهَلْ بَقِيَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ وَالِدَيْكَ ؟ فَقَالَ: أُمِّي. قَالَ: فَأَبْلِ اللهَ عُذْرًا فِي بِرِّهَا، فَإِذَا فَعَلْتَ ذَلِكَ فَأَنْتَ حَاجٌّ وَمُعْتَمِرٌ وَمُجَاهِدٌ إِذَا رَضِيَتْ عَنْكَ أُمُّكَ، فَاتَّقِ اللهَ وَبَرَّهَا
✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “I desire jihād but I am not able to do it.” He said: “Do you still have either of your parents?” He said: “My mother.” He said: “Then seek God’s pardon in being dutiful to her. If you do that, then you are a pilgrim, a performer of ‘umrah, and a warrior in jihād as long as your mother is pleased with you. So fear God and be dutiful to her.”

✧ Whoever helps an oppressor with falsehood in order to invalidate a right by his falsehood has disavowed the protection of God, Mighty and Majestic, and the protection of His Messenger ﷺ. Whoever consumes a dirham of usury is like one who commits thirty-three acts of fornication. And whoever’s flesh grows from unlawful earnings, the Fire is more fitting for him.

جَاءَتْ أُمُّ بَنِي أَبِي طَلْحَةَ وَهِيَ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ، فَقَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّ اللهَ لَا يَسْتَحْيِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ هَلْ عَلَى الْمَرْأَةِ مِنْ غُسْلٍ إِذَا رَأَتْ مَا يَرَى الرَّجُلُ، فَضَحِكْتُ، وَقُلْتُ: أَتَحْتَلِمُ الْمَرْأَةُ ؟ فَقَالَ ﷺ: لَوْلَا ذَلِكَ لَمَا كَانَ يُشْبِهُ أُمَّهُ
✧ The mother of Abū Ṭalḥah’s sons, who was Umm Sulaym, came and said: “O Messenger of God, God is not ashamed of the truth: Is a woman required to perform the purificatory bath if she sees what a man sees?” I laughed and said: “Does a woman have a wet dream?” He ﷺ said: “If it were not for that, she would not resemble his mother.”

✧ I was eating with the Prophet ﷺ some ḥays in a wooden bowl. ‘Umar ؓ passed by and he called him, so he ate. His finger touched my finger, and he said: “If I were obeyed concerning you women, no eye would see you.” Then the verse of the veil was revealed.

اخْتَفَى رَجُلٌ عِنْدَ أَبِي السَّوَّارِ الْعَدَوِيِّ زَمَنَ الْحَجَّاجِ بْنِ يُوسُفَ، فَقِيلَ لِلْحَجَّاجِ: إِنَّهِ عِنْدَ أَبِي السَّوَّارِ، فَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهِ الْحَجَّاجُ، فَأَحْضَرَهُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ: الرَّجُلُ الَّذِي عِنْدَكَ، فَقَالَ: لَيْسَ عِنْدِي، فَقَالَ: وَإِلَّا أُمُّ السَّوَّارِ طَالِقٌ، يَعْنِي امْرَأَةَ أَبِي السَّوَّارِ، فَقَالَ: مَا خَرَجْتُ مِنْ عِنْدِهَا وَأَنَا أَنْوِي طَلَاقَهَا، فَقَالَ: وَإِلَّا أَنْتَ بَرِيءٌ مِنَ الْإِسْلَامِ، قَالَ: فَإِلَى أَيْنَ أَذْهَبُ ؟ فَخَلَّى سَبِيلَهُ
✧ A man hid with Abu al-Sawwar al-'Adawi during the time of al-Hajjaj b. Yusuf. Al-Hajjaj was told that the man was with Abu al-Sawwar. So al-Hajjaj sent for him and brought him, and said to him: 'The man who is with you.' He said: 'He is not with me.' He said: 'Or else Umm al-Sawwar is divorced,' meaning Abu al-Sawwar's wife. He said: 'I did not leave her while I intended to divorce her.' He said: 'Or else you are free from Islam.' He said: 'Then where shall I go?' So he let him go.

✧ A man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we have learned how to greet you with salam, but how do we send salah upon you?' He said: 'Say: O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon Ibrahim; indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim; indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.'

✧ A man asked permission to enter upon her, but she refused to grant him permission. He said, "I am your paternal uncle through breastfeeding." When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came, she informed him, and he said, "Grant him permission, for indeed he is your paternal uncle through breastfeeding."

✧ Umar ؓ addressed us in al-Jabiyah and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood among us as I stand among you, and said: "Honor my Companions, then those who follow them, then those who follow them. Then falsehood will spread until a man testifies and is not asked to testify, and swears and is not asked to swear. Whoever desires the middle of Paradise, let him adhere to the community, for Satan is with the one, and he is farther from the two. Indeed, no man should be alone with a woman, for the third of them is Satan. Indeed, whoever is pleased by his good deed and grieved by his evil deed is a believer."

جَاءَ الْعَبَّاسُ ؓ يَعُودُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فِي مَرَضِهِ، فَرَفَعَهُ، فَأَجْلَسَهُ فِي مَجْلِسِهِ عَلَى سَرِيرِهِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: رَفَعَكَ اللهُ، يَا عَمِّ، فَقَالَ الْعَبَّاسُ: هَذَا عَلِيٌّ يَسْتَأْذِنُ، فَقَالَ: " يَدْخُلُ "، فَدَخَلَ وَمَعَهُ الْحَسَنُ وَالْحُسَيْنُ، فَقَالَ: هَؤُلَاءِ وَلَدُكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ. قَالَ: " وَهُمْ وَلَدُكَ يَا عَمِّ ". قَالَ: أُحِبُّهُمَا، فَقَالَ: " أَحَبَّكَ اللهُ كَمَا أَحْبَبْتَهُمَا
✧ Al-Abbas ؓ came to visit the Prophet ﷺ during his illness, so he lifted him and seated him in his place on his bed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "May Allah raise you, O uncle." Al-Abbas said: "Here is Ali seeking permission." He said: "Let him enter." So he entered, and with him were al-Hasan and al-Husayn. Al-Abbas said: "These are your children, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "And they are your children, O uncle." He said: "I love them." He said: "May Allah love you as you love them."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا جَاءَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنِّي حَمَلْتُ أُمِّي عَلَى عُنُقِي فَرْسَخَيْنِ فِي رَمْضَاءَ شَدِيدَةٍ، لَوْ أَلْقَيْتَ فِيهَا بَضْعَةً مِنْ لَحْمٍ لَنَضِجَتْ، فَهَلْ أَدَّيْتُ شُكْرَهَا ؟ فَقَالَ: لَعَلَّهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ بِطَلْقَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ
✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I carried my mother on my neck for two farsakhs in intense heat, such that had you thrown a piece of meat into it, it would have cooked. Have I fulfilled her gratitude?' He said, 'Perhaps that may be for a single labor pain.'

✧ A group from 'Uraynah came to the Prophet ﷺ and found Madinah unwholesome, so the Prophet ﷺ sent them out to the camels of charity. They drank from their milk and recovered, then they drove off the camels and apostatized from Islam. The Prophet ﷺ ordered that they be pursued, and they were overtaken. He cut off their hands and gouged out their eyes.

✧ Some captives were brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and there was a woman among the captives who was running about. When she found a baby among the captives, she took him, pressed him to her belly and nursed him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Do you think this woman would throw her child into the fire?' We said: 'No, by Allah, while she is able not to throw him.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is more merciful to His servants than this woman is to her child.'

✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was at the standing place in Muzdalifah. I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have come from the mountain of Tayyi’, and I have exhausted myself and wearied my mount. By Allah, I have not left any hill but I have stood upon it. Is there any Hajj for me, O Messenger of Allah?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever prays this prayer with us and has come to Arafah by night or day has fulfilled his rites and completed his Hajj.”

صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِحْدَى صَلَاتَيِ الْعَشِيِّ: الظُّهْرَ أَوِ الْعَصْرَ، فَسَلَّمَ فِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ، فَخَرَجَ سَرَعَانُ النَّاسِ، فَقَالُوا: أَقَصُرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ ؟، وَفِي الْقَوْمِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ، فَهَابَا أَنْ يُكَلِّمَاهُ، وَقَامَ سَرَعَانُ النَّاسِ، وَقَامَ [ فَقَامَ ] إِلَى خَشَبَةٍ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ كَانَ يَضَعُ يَدَهُ عَلَيْهَا، فَقَامَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ يُقَالُ لَهُ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ، وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُسَمِّيهُ ذَا الْيَدَيْنِ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَقَصُرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ أَمْ نَسِيتَ ؟ قَالَ: لَمْ أَنْسَ، وَلَمْ تَقْصُرِ الصَّلَاةُ، فَسَأَلَ الْقَوْمَ، فَقَالُوا: صَدَقَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ، فَرَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ مِثْلَ رُكُوعِهِ أَوْ أَطْوَلَ، ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ led us in one of the two afternoon prayers, ẓuhr or ʿaṣr, and he gave the salutation after two rakʿahs. The hasty ones among the people left, saying: Has the prayer been shortened? In the group were Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, and they were too awed to speak to him. The hasty ones among the people left, and he [the Prophet] stood up [then he stood] by a piece of wood in the mosque on which he used to place his hand. A man from the group called Dhū al-Yadayn stood up to him—and the Messenger of God ﷺ used to call him Dhū al-Yadayn—and said: O Messenger of God, has the prayer been shortened or did you forget? He said: I did not forget, and the prayer has not been shortened. He asked the people, and they said: Dhū al-Yadayn has spoken the truth. So the Messenger of God ﷺ returned and prayed two rakʿahs like the first two or longer, then he prostrated twice.
