✧ I witnessed Uthman on the day he was besieged in the place of the funerals. If a stone had been thrown, it would not have fallen except on a man's head. I saw Uthman look out from the small door adjacent to the station of Jibril ﷺ and say: 'O people, is Talhah among you?' They remained silent. Then he said: 'O people, is Talhah among you?' They remained silent. Then he said: 'O people, is Talhah among you?' [They remained silent. Then he said: 'O people, is Talhah among you?'] Talhah b. Ubayd Allah stood up, and Uthman said to him: 'Do I not see you here? I did not think you would be in a group that hears my call three times and then does not answer me. I adjure you by Allah, O Talhah: do you remember the day when you and I were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in such-and-such a place, with no one else from his companions except me and you?' He said: 'Yes.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to you: 'O Talhah, there is no prophet but that he has with him, from his companions, a close friend from his ummah who will be with him in Paradise. And this Uthman b. Affan' – meaning me – 'is my close friend with me in Paradise.' Talhah said: 'O Allah, yes.' Then he left.

✧ I was standing near Uthman b. Affan when he said: 'Shall I tell you how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform ablution?' We said: 'Yes.' So he called for water, and washed his face three times, rinsed his mouth and sniffed water three times, then washed his hands up to the elbows three times, then wiped his head and ears, and washed his feet three times. Then he said: 'This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform ablution.'

✧ I witnessed the house on the day Uthman was struck. He looked out at them once and said: 'Call for me your two companions who incited you against me.' They were called for him, and he said: 'I adjure you both by Allah: do you know that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah, the mosque became too small for its people, and he said: "Who will buy this plot from his pure wealth, so that he may be in it like the Muslims, and he will have something better than it in Paradise?" So I bought it from my pure wealth and made it for the Muslims. And now you prevent me from praying two rak'ahs in it?' Then he said: 'I adjure you by Allah: do you know that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah, there was no well in it from which sweet water could be drawn except Rumah, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Who will buy it from his pure wealth, so that his bucket will be in it like the buckets of the Muslims, and he will have something better than it in Paradise?" So I bought it from my pure wealth. And now you prevent me from drinking from it?' Then he said: 'Do you know that I am the one who equipped the army of hardship (Jaysh al-Usrah)?' They said: 'O Allah, yes.'

✧ I said to Abd al-Rahman b. Awf: 'How did you pledge allegiance to Uthman and leave Ali?' He said: 'What is my fault? I began with Ali and said: "I pledge allegiance to you on the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of His Messenger, and the conduct of Abu Bakr and Umar." He said: "To the extent I am able." Then I presented it to Uthman, and he accepted it.'

✧ I heard Uthman say on the pulpit: 'O people, I have concealed from you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ out of dislike that you would split from me. Now it seems appropriate to tell it to you, so that each man may choose for himself what appears best to him. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Guarding the frontier for one day in the path of Allah is better than a thousand days spent elsewhere."

✧ I heard Uthman delivering a sermon on the pulpit saying: I used to buy dates from a clan of the Jews called Banu Qaynuqa', then sell them for a profit of a few saa's. The Prophet ﷺ heard of that and said: O Uthman, when you buy, measure out, and when you sell, measure out.
Musnad Ahmad 561Sahih

✧ Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ with the truth, and I was among those who responded to Allah and His Messenger, and believed in what He sent Muhammad ﷺ with. Then I made the two emigrations, attained marriage into the family of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and gave allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By Allah, I never disobeyed him or deceived him until Allah, Mighty and Majestic, took him.

✧ Ibn 'Abbas said to us: I said to 'Uthman b. 'Affan: What made you take al-Anfal, which is one of the mathani, and Bara'ah, which is one of the mi'in, and join them together without writing - Ibn Ja'far said: between them - a line with Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim, and place them among the seven long surahs? What made you do that? 'Uthman said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would, over time, receive surahs of various numbers of verses. When something was revealed to him, he would call one of those who wrote for him and say, 'Place this in the surah in which such-and-such is mentioned.' And verses would be revealed to him, and he would say, 'Place these verses in the surah in which such-and-such is mentioned.' And a verse would be revealed to him, and he would say, 'Place this verse in the surah in which such-and-such is mentioned.' Al-Anfal was among the first [surahs] revealed in Madinah, and Bara'ah was among the last of the Quran, and its story was similar to its story. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away without clarifying to us that it was part of it, and I thought that it was part of it. For that reason, I joined them together and did not write between them a line with Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim. Ibn Ja'far said: And I placed them among the seven long surahs.
Musnad Ahmad 400Sahih

✧ Umar b. al-Khattab sent for me, and while I was thus, his freedman Yarfa came to him and said: This is Uthman, Abd al-Rahman, Sa‘d, and al-Zubayr b. al-Awwam — he said: I do not know whether he mentioned Talha or not — asking permission to enter upon you? He said: Give them permission. Then he waited a while, then came and said: This is al-Abbas and Ali asking permission to enter upon you? He said: Give them permission. When al-Abbas entered, he said: O Commander of the Faithful, judge between me and this one — and they were then disputing over what Allah had granted as booty to His Messenger from the wealth of Banu al-Nadir. So the people said: Judge between them, O Commander of the Faithful, and relieve each one of his companion, for their dispute has gone on long. So Umar said: I adjure you by Allah, by whose permission the heavens and the earth stand, do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “We are not inherited from; what we leave is charity”? They said: He said that. And he said the like to the two of them, and they said: Yes. He said: Then I shall inform you about this fay’; Allah, Mighty and Majestic, singled out His Prophet ﷺ from it with something He did not give to anyone else. He said: “And what Allah restored to His Messenger from them — you did not spur for it any horses or camels” — and it belonged to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ exclusively. By Allah, he did not take it for himself without you, nor did he prefer himself over you. He divided it among you and spread it among you until this wealth remained from it. He would spend on his family from it for a year, then make what remained of it a portion of the wealth of Allah. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken, Abu Bakr said: I am the successor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after him; I will act in it as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to act in it.

✧ I definitely know a word that no servant says truly from his heart except that he is forbidden from the Fire. So Umar b. al-Khattab said to him: I shall tell you what it is; it is the word of sincerity which Allah, Blessed and Exalted, enjoined upon Muhammad ﷺ and his companions, and it is the word of piety upon which the Prophet of Allah ﷺ urged his uncle Abu Talib at the time of death: the testimony that there is no god but Allah.

✧ Uthman looked over his companions while he was besieged and said: For what reason do you kill me? For I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: The blood of a Muslim man is not lawful except for one of three: a man who commits adultery after being married, upon him is stoning; or one who kills deliberately, upon him is retaliation; or one who apostatizes after his Islam, upon him is execution. By Allah, I did not commit adultery in the Jahiliyyah or in Islam, nor did I kill anyone so that I should give my own life in retaliation for him, nor did I apostatize since I embraced Islam. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.

✧ When Uthman stood by a grave, he would weep until his beard became wet. It was said to him: Paradise and the Fire are mentioned and you do not weep, yet you weep over this? ✧ I was with Uthman in the house while he was besieged. He said: We used to enter through a passage; when we entered it, we could hear the speech of those on the paved area. He said: One day Uthman entered for a need and came out to us with his color changed and said: They have just now been threatening me with death. He said: We said: May Allah suffice you against them, O Commander of the Believers. He said: And why would they kill me? For I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: The blood of a Muslim man is not lawful except in one of three cases: a man who disbelieves after his Islam, or commits adultery after being married, or kills a soul without a soul. By Allah, I never committed adultery either in Jahiliyya or in Islam, nor did I wish for a replacement for my religion since Allah, Mighty and Glorious, guided me, nor did I kill a soul. So why would they kill me?

✧ I said to Uthman: What prompted you to turn to al-Anfal, which is among the mathani, and to Bara'ah, which is among the mi'in, and join them together without writing between them the line "Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim," and you placed them in the seven long surahs? What prompted you to that? He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to have periods of time pass while surahs of numerous verses were being sent down to him. When something was sent down to him, he would call one of those who wrote for him and say: Put this in the surah in which such-and-such is mentioned. And when verses were sent down to him, he would say: Put these verses in the surah in which such-and-such is mentioned. And when a single verse was sent down to him, he would say: Put this verse in the surah in which such-and-such is mentioned. He said: Al-Anfal was among the first of what was sent down in Madinah, and Bara'ah was among the last of what was sent down of the Qur'an. He said: Its story was similar to its story, so we thought it was from it. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken, and he had not made clear to us that it was from it. For that reason, I joined between them and did not write between them the line "Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim," and I placed them in the seven long surahs.
