✧ My family married me to a Roman slave girl of theirs, and I had intercourse with her. She bore me a black boy like me, and I named him Abdullah. Then I had intercourse with her again, and she bore me a black boy like me, and I named him Ubaydullah. Then a Roman slave of my family named Yuhannis developed a relationship with her and spoke to her in his language. He said: She bore [him] a boy like a gecko among geckos. I said to her: What is this? She said: He belongs to Yuhannis. He said: We were brought before the Commander of the Faithful, Uthman. Mahdi said: I think he said: He asked them and they confessed. He said: Are you both willing that I judge between you according to the judgment of the Messenger of Allah? He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled that the child belongs to the bed, and the adulterer gets the stone. Mahdi said: I think he said: He flogged her and flogged him, and they were both slaves.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationAl-Dāraquṭnī was asked about it and said: Mahdī b. Maymūn and Jarīr b. Ḥāzim narrated it from Muḥammad b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Yaʿqūb, from al-Ḥasan b. Saʿd, from Rabāḥ, from ʿUthmān. Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh contradicted them, so he narrated it from al-Ḥasan b. Saʿd, from his father, and he traced the hadith back to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, from the Prophet ﷺ. The first account is more sound (aṣaḥḥ).
