✧ 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf met al-Walid b. 'Uqbah. Al-Walid said to him: 'Why do I see you have been aloof from the Commander of the Faithful, Uthman?' 'Abd al-Rahman said to him: 'Tell him that I did not flee on the day of 'Aynayn' — 'Asim said: meaning the day of Uhud — 'and I did not stay behind on the day of Badr, and I did not abandon the Sunnah of 'Umar.' He said: He went and told that to Uthman. He said: Uthman said: 'As for his saying that I did not flee on the day of 'Aynayn, how can he reproach me for a sin that Allah has forgiven? Allah said: "Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met, it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some of what they had earned, but Allah has pardoned them." As for his saying that I stayed behind on the day of Badr, I was nursing Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, until she died, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ allotted me a share, and whoever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ allotted a share has witnessed. As for his saying that I did not abandon the Sunnah of 'Umar, I am not able to bear it, nor is he. Go to him and tell him that.'
