حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ وَعَفَّانُ الْمَعْنَى قَالا حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ بْنِ سَهْلٍ قَالَكُنَّا مَعَ عُثْمَانَ وَهُوَ مَحْصُورٌ فِي الدَّارِ فَدَخَلَ مَدْخَلًا كَانَ إِذَا دَخَلَهُ يَسْمَعُ كَلامَهُ مَنْ عَلَى الْبَلَاطِ قَالَ فَدَخَلَ ذَلِكَ الْمَدْخَلَ وَخَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا فَقَالَ إِنَّهُمْ يَتَوَعَّدُونَنِي بِالْقَتْلِ آنِفًا قَالَ

كُنَّا مَعَ عُثْمَانَ وَهُوَ مَحْصُورٌ فِي الدَّارِ، فَدَخَلَ مَدْخَلًا كَانَ إِذَا دَخَلَهُ يَسْمَعُ كَلَامَهُ مَنْ عَلَى الْبَلَاطِ، قَالَ: فَدَخَلَ ذَلِكَ الْمَدْخَلَ، وَخَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا فَقَالَ: إِنَّهُمْ يَتَوَعَّدُونِي بِالْقَتْلِ آنِفًا، قَالَ: قُلْنَا: يَكْفِيكَهُمُ اللهُ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، قَالَ: وَبِمَ يَقْتُلُونَنِي ؟ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: لَا يَحِلُّ دَمُ امْرِئٍ مُسْلِمٍ إِلَّا بِإِحْدَى ثَلَاثٍ: رَجُلٌ كَفَرَ بَعْدَ إِسْلَامِهِ، أَوْ زَنَى بَعْدَ إِحْصَانِهِ، أَوْ قَتَلَ نَفْسًا فَيُقْتَلُ بِهَا، فَوَاللهِ مَا أَحْبَبْتُ أَنَّ لِي بِدِينِي بَدَلًا مُنْذُ هَدَانِي اللهُ، وَلَا زَنَيْتُ فِي جَاهِلِيَّةٍ وَلَا إِسْلَامٍ قَطُّ، وَلَا قَتَلْتُ نَفْسًا، فَبِمَ يَقْتُلُونَنِي ؟

✧ We were with Uthman while he was besieged in the house. He entered a place where, when he entered it, those on the balat could hear his words. He said: He entered that place and came out to us and said: "They are threatening me with killing just now." We said: "God will suffice you against them, O Commander of the Faithful." He said: "And why would they kill me? I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'The blood of a Muslim man is not lawful except for one of three reasons: a man who disbelieves after his Islam, or commits adultery after his chastity, or kills a person and is killed for it.' By God, I have not loved to have any substitute for my religion since God guided me, and I have never committed adultery in ignorance or in Islam, and I have not killed a person, so why would they kill me?"
