✧ My master married me to a Roman slave girl, and I had intercourse with her. She bore me a black boy like me, and I named him Abdullah. Then I had intercourse with her again, and she bore me a black boy like me, and I named him Ubaydullah. Then a Roman slave boy served me — I think he said: a Roman belonging to my family called Yuhannis — and he spoke privately with her in his tongue, meaning in Greek, and had intercourse with her. She bore him a red boy like a gecko from among the geckos. I said to her: What is this? She said: This is from Yuhannis. He said: We brought the case before Uthman b. Affan, and they both confessed. Uthman said: If you wish, I will judge between you with the judgment of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled that the child belongs to the bed. He said: I think he said: And he had them both flogged.

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationAl-Dāraquṭnī was asked about it and said: Mahdī b. Maymūn and Jarīr b. Ḥāzim narrated it from Muḥammad b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Yaʿqūb, from al-Ḥasan b. Saʿd, from Rabāḥ, from ʿUthmān. Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh contradicted them, so he narrated it from al-Ḥasan b. Saʿd, from his father, and he traced the hadith back to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, from the Prophet ﷺ. The first account is more sound (aṣaḥḥ).
