  3. Abū Maʿshar
  4. Ibrāhīmaʿan ʿAlqamah

✧ I was with Ibn Mas'ud while he was with Uthman, and Uthman said to him: What remains of you for women? He said: When women were mentioned, Ibn Mas'ud said: Come close, O Alqamah. He said: And I was a young man. Uthman said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out upon a group of young men from the Muhajirun and said: Whoever among you has the means, let him marry, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and guarding chastity. And whoever does not, then fasting is a means of reducing desire for him.

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Yaḥyá b. Maʿīn

machine translationYaḥyā b. Maʿīn was asked about the hadith of Abū Maʿshar, and he said: "A mistake; al-Aʿmash contradicted him."

    in مسند أحمد, p. 412
  • Aḥmad ibn Shuʿayb al-Nasāʾī

machine translationThis Abū Maʿshar is named Ziyād b. Kulayb, and he is trustworthy (thiqah). He was a companion of Ibrāhīm. Manṣūr, Mughīrah and Shuʿbah narrated from him. As for Abū Maʿshar al-Madanī, his name is Najīḥ, and he is weak (ḍaʿīf); besides his weakness, his narrations had also become confused (ikhtalaṭa), and he has reprehensible (munkar) hadiths.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 412
  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationHe was also asked about the hadith of ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbdullāh, from the Prophet ﷺ: "Whoever among you is able to marry, let him marry" (the hadith). He said: It is narrated by al-Aʿmash, al-Mughīrah, Manṣūr, Ḥammād and Abū Ḥamzah, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbdullāh. Abū Maʿshar contradicted them: he narrated it from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, and traced it back to ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān. The statement of al-Aʿmash and those who followed him is more correct (aṣaḥḥ).

    in مسند أحمد, p. 412
