✧ They used to pray with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When he bowed, they bowed, and when he said, 'Allah hears the one who praises Him,' they remained standing until they saw him place his face on the ground, then they followed him.

جَمَعْتُ مُوَئْلًا لِي مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ، فَأَتَيْتُ عَائِشَةَ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، إِنِّي جَمَعْتُ مُوَئْلًا لِي مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ، فَسَلِي رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ: فِي أَيِّ ذَلِكَ أَجْعَلُهُ ؟ أَفِي رَقَبَةٍ أُعْتِقُهَا ؟ أَمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ ؟ أَمْ عَلَى زَوْجٍ مَجْهُودٍ وَبَنِي أَخٍ أَيْتَامٍ ؟، فَدَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ، فَذَكَرَتْ لَهُ عَائِشَةُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: تَصَدَّقُهُ عَنْ زَوْجٍ مَجْهُودٍ وَبَنِي أَخٍ أَيْتَامٍ، إِنَّ الصَّدَقَةَ عَلَى ذِي الْقَرَابَةِ تَضْعُفُ مَرَّتَيْنِ فِي الْأَجْرِ
✧ I gathered some property of mine from charity and came to Aisha. I said, 'O Mother of the Believers, I have gathered some property of mine from charity. Ask the Messenger of God ﷺ in which of these I should place it: in a slave I free, or in the way of God, or upon a hard-pressed husband and orphaned nephews?' The Messenger of God ﷺ entered upon Aisha, and she mentioned it to him. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, 'Give it in charity on behalf of a hard-pressed husband and orphaned nephews. Charity given to relatives doubles the reward twice.'

مَنْ حَفَرَ قَبْرًا بَنَى اللهُ لَهُ بَيْتًا فِي الْجَنَّةِ، وَمَنْ غَسَّلَ مَيِّتًا خَرَجَ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَيَوْمِ وَلَدَتْهُ أُمُّهُ، وَمَنْ كَفَّنَ مَيِّتًا كَسَاهُ اللهُ أَثْوَابًا مِنْ حُلَلِ الْجَنَّةِ، وَمَنْ عَزَّى حَزِينًا أَلْبَسَهُ اللهُ التَّقْوَى وَصَلَّى عَلَى رُوحِهِ فِي الْأَرْوَاحِ، وَمَنْ عَزَّى مُصَابًا كَسَاهُ اللهُ حُلَّتَيْنِ مِنْ حُلَلِ الْجَنَّةِ لَا يَقُومُ لَهُمَا الدُّنْيَا، وَمَنِ اتَّبَعَ جِنَازَةً حَتَّى يُقْضَى دَفْنُهَا كُتِبَ لَهُ ثَلَاثَةُ قَرَارِيطَ، الْقِيرَاطُ مِنْهَا أَعْظَمُ مِنْ جَبَلِ أُحُدٍ، وَمَنْ كَفَلَ يَتِيمًا أَوْ أَرْمَلَةً أَظَلَّهُ اللهُ فِي ظِلِّهِ وَأَدْخَلَهُ جَنَّتَهُ
✧ Whoever digs a grave, God builds for him a house in Paradise; and whoever washes a dead body, he comes out of his sins like the day his mother gave birth to him; and whoever shrouds a dead body, God clothes him with garments from the robes of Paradise; and whoever consoles a grieving person, God clothes him with piety and sends blessings upon his soul among the souls; and whoever consoles an afflicted person, God clothes him with two garments from the robes of Paradise that the world cannot equal; and whoever follows a funeral procession until its burial is complete, three qirats are written for him, each qirat greater than Mount Uhud; and whoever sponsors an orphan or a widow, God shades him in His shade and admits him to His Paradise.

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ used to say: 'I seek refuge in You from the trial of the false messiah, the Dajjal, and from the punishment of the grave, and from the trial of the grave, and from the evil of the trial of wealth, and from the evil of the trial of poverty, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of the trial of the false messiah, the Dajjal. O God, wash away my sins with water of snow and hail, and purify my heart from sins as You purified the white garment from dirt, and I seek refuge in You from laziness, senility, sin, and debt.'

أَتَى عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: إِنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَأْمُرُ بِنِكَاحِ الْمُتْعَةِ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ: سُبْحَانَ اللهِ، مَا أَظُنُّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَفْعَلُ هَذَا، قَالُوا: بَلَى، إِنَّهُ يَأْمُرُ بِهِ، فَقَالَ: وَهَلْ كَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ إِلَّا غُلَامًا صَغِيرًا إِذْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ - ﷺ. ثُمَّ قَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ: نَهَانَا عَنْهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَمَا كُنَّا مُسَافِحِينَ
✧ Abdullah b. Umar was approached and told, 'Ibn Abbas commands mut'ah marriage.' Ibn Umar said, 'Glory be to God! I do not think Ibn Abbas would do this.' They said, 'Yes, he commands it.' He said, 'Was Ibn Abbas anything but a young boy when the Messenger of God ﷺ —' Then Ibn Umar said, 'The Messenger of God ﷺ forbade us from it, and we were not fornicators.'

كَانَ يُرَغِّبُ النَّاسَ فِي قِيَامِ رَمَضَانَ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَأْمُرَهُمْ بِعَزِيمَةِ أَمْرٍ فِيهِ، ثُمَّ تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَالْأَمْرُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ كَانَ الْأَمْرُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ خِلَافَةَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَصَدْرًا مِنْ خِلَافَةِ عُمَرَ ؓ
✧ He used to encourage the people to stand in prayer during Ramadan without commanding them to do so as an obligatory matter. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away and the matter remained thus, and it remained thus during the caliphate of Abu Bakr and part of the caliphate of Umar ؓ.

كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ وَالْقَمَرُ طَالِعٌ لَيْلَةَ الْبَدْرِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: أَمَا إِنَّكُمْ سَتُعَايِنُونَ رَبَّكُمْ فِي الْجَنَّةِ كَمَا تُعَايِنُونَ هَذَا الْقَمَرَ، لَا تُضَامُونَ فِي رُؤْيَتِهِ، فَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ أَنْ لَا تُغْلَبُوا عَلَى صَلَاةٍ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ غُرُوبِهَا "، ثُمَّ قَرَأَ: وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ الْغُرُوبِ
✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night while the moon was rising on the night of the full moon. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, you will see your Lord in Paradise just as you see this moon; you will not be harmed in seeing Him. So if you are able not to be overcome and miss the prayer before sunrise and before sunset, then do so." Then he recited: "And glorify the praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting."

خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَالْحَبَشَةُ يَلْعَبُونَ، وَأَنَا أَطَّلِعُ مِنْ خَوْخَةٍ لِي، فَدَنَا مِنِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَوَضَعْتُ يَدَيَّ عَلَى مَنْكِبَيْهِ، وَجَعَلْتُ أَنْظُرُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّهُنَّ بَنَاتُ أَرْفِدَةَ فَمَا زِلْتُ أَنْظُرُ وَهُمْ يَلْعَبُونَ وَيَرْقُصُونَ حَتَّى كُنْتُ أَنَا الَّذِي انْتَهَيْتُ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out while the Abyssinians were playing, and I was looking through a small window of mine. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came close to me, so I placed my hands on his shoulders and began to watch. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "They are the daughters of Arfida." I continued watching them playing and dancing until I was the one who stopped.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَرَادَ الْحَاجَةَ أَبْعَدَ الْمَشْيَ، فَانْطَلَقَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ لِحَاجَتِهِ، ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ، وَلَبِسَ أَحَدَ خُفَّيْهِ، فَجَاءَ طَائِرٌ أَخْضَرُ فَأَخَذَ الْخُفَّ الْآخَرَ، فَارْتَفَعَ بِهِ ثُمَّ أَلْقَاهُ، فَخَرَجَ مِنْهُ أَسْوَدُ سَابِحٌ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: هَذِهِ كَرَامَةٌ، أَكْرَمَنِي اللهُ بِهَا، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَنْ يَمْشِي عَلَى بَطْنِهِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَنْ يَمْشِي عَلَى رِجْلَيْنِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَنْ يَمْشِي عَلَى أَرْبَعٍ
✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ needed to relieve himself, he would go far away. One day he went for that need, then performed ablution and put on one of his leather socks. A green bird came, took the other sock, flew up with it, and then dropped it, and a black slithering creature came out of it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "This is an honor with which Allah has honored me." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the evil of what walks on its belly, from the evil of what walks on two legs, and from the evil of what walks on four."

✧ Talha b. Ubayd Allah spoke harshly to Amir b. Fuhayra about something. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Gently, O Talha, for he witnessed Badr just as you witnessed it, and the best of you are the best to their freed slaves."

اضْطَجَعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَى حَصِيرٍ، فَأَثَّرَ الْحَصِيرُ بِجِلْدِهِ، فَلَمَّا اسْتَيْقَظَ جَعَلْتُ أَمْسَحُ عَنْهُ، وَأَقُولُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَلَا آذَنْتَنِي قَبْلَ أَنْ تَنَامَ عَلَى هَذَا الْحَصِيرِ فَأَبْسُطَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِ شَيْئًا يَقِيكَ مِنْهُ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: مَا لِي وَمَا لِلدُّنْيَا، وَمَا لِلدُّنْيَا وَمَا لِي، مَا أَنَا وَالدُّنْيَا إِلَّا كَرَاكِبٍ اسْتَظَلَّ فِي فَيْءِ شَجَرَةٍ، ثُمَّ رَاحَ وَتَرَكَهَا
✧ The Prophet ﷺ lay down on a mat, and the mat left marks on his skin. When he woke up, I began to wipe those marks and said: "O Messenger of Allah, why did you not let me know before sleeping on this mat so that I could spread something over it to protect you?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "What have I to do with this world? What has this world to do with me? I and this world are but like a rider who rests in the shade of a tree, then leaves it and moves on."

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ: آمَنَ الرَّسُولُ بِمَا أُنْـزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ رَبِّهِ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ قَرَأَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ: غُفْرَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ قَالَ اللهُ: " قَدْ غَفَرْتُ لَكُمْ. " فَلَمَّا قَالَ: رَبَّنَا لا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِنْ نَسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا رَبَّنَا قَالَ اللهُ: " لَا أُؤَاخِذُكُمْ. " فَلَمَّا قَالَ: وَلا تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَا إِصْرًا كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِنَا قَالَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: " لَا أَحْمِلُ عَلَيْكُمْ "، فَلَمَّا قَالَ: وَلا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ قَالَ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى: " لَا أُحَمِّلُكُمْ وَاعْفُ عَنَّا قَالَ: " قَدْ عَفَوْتُ عَنْكُمْ "، فَلَمَّا قَالَ: وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا قَالَ: " قَدْ غَفَرْتُ لَكُمْ "، فَلَمَّا قَالَ: وَارْحَمْنَا قَالَ: " قَدْ رَحِمْتُكُمْ "، فَلَمَّا قَالَ: فَانْصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ قَالَ: " قَدْ نَصَرْتُكُمْ عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ
✧ When this verse was revealed: 'The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and so do the believers,' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited it. When he reached 'Our Lord, Your forgiveness, and to You is the final return,' Allah said: 'I have forgiven you.' When he said: 'Our Lord, do not hold us accountable if we forget or fall into error,' Allah said: 'I will not hold you accountable.' When he said: 'And do not place upon us a burden like that which You placed upon those before us,' Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: 'I will not place a burden upon you.' When he said: 'And do not impose upon us that which we have no strength to bear,' Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: 'I will not impose upon you. And pardon us,' He said: 'I have pardoned you.' When he said: 'And forgive us,' He said: 'I have forgiven you.' When he said: 'And have mercy on us,' He said: 'I have had mercy on you.' When he said: 'And grant us victory over the disbelieving people,' He said: 'I have granted you victory over the disbelieving people.'

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ قَالَ: الْحَمْدُ لِلهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَمَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ، وَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا قَامَ قَالَ: بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ نَمُوتُ وَنَحْيَا
✧ When the Prophet ﷺ woke up, he would say: 'Praise be to Allah who gave us life after He caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.' And when the Prophet ﷺ slept, he would say: 'In Your name, O Allah, we die and we live.'

مَثَلُ الْقَائِمِ عَلَى حُدُودِ اللهِ وَالْمُدَاهِنِ فِي حُدُودِ اللهِ وَالرَّاكِبِ حُدُودَ اللهِ كَمَثَلِ نَفَرٍ ثَلَاثَةٍ كَانُوا فِي سَفِينَةٍ، فَتَوَزَّعُوا مَنَازِلَهَا، فَصَارَ مَكَانُ النِّزِّ وَمِهَرَاقُ الْمَاءِ لِأَحَدِهِمْ، فَتَأَذَّوْا بِهِ، فَأَخَذَ الْقَدُومَ فَقَرَعَ مَكَانَهُ، فَقَالَ أَحَدُ الْبَاقِينَ لِلْآخَرِ: أَلَا تَرَى هَذَا الَّذِي يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَخْرِقَ سَفِينَتَنَا فَيُغْرِقَنَا ؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْآخَرُ: دَعْهُ؛ فَإِنَّمَا يَخْرِقُ مَكَانَهُ "، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " فَإِنْ مَنَعُوهُ سَلِمَ وَسَلِمُوا، وَإِنْ تَرَكُوهُ غَرِقَ وَغَرِقُوا
✧ The example of the one who upholds the limits set by Allah, the one who flatters concerning the limits set by Allah, and the one who violates the limits set by Allah is like three people who were on a ship. They divided its quarters, and one of them got the place where water seeped in and where water was bailed out, so they were bothered by him. He took an axe and began to chop at his place. One of the remaining two said to the other: 'Do you not see this one who wants to breach our ship and drown us?' The other replied: 'Leave him, for he is only breaching his own place.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'If they stop him, he and they will be safe; but if they leave him, he will drown and they will drown.'

✧ When the Prophet ﷺ performed ghusl from janabah, he washed his palms three times before dipping them into the vessel. Then he poured with his right hand over his left, washing his private part until he cleansed it with his left hand. Then he performed wudu as for prayer." She said: "He had hair, and he would take water and insert it into the roots of his hair, running his fingers through it, until when he had cleansed the skin, he poured over his head three times, then poured over his body.

✧ The Prophet ﷺ visited me and said: "Do you know who the martyrs of my Ummah are on the Day of Resurrection?" The people remained silent, so I said: O Messenger of Allah, the one killed in the path of Allah, the patient one who seeks reward is a martyr. He said: "If the martyrs of my Ummah were only these, they would be few indeed. The one killed in the path of Allah is a martyr; the one who drowns is a martyr; the one who dies of a stomach disease is a martyr; the plague is martyrdom; and the woman who dies in childbirth, her child will drag her by her umbilical cord to Paradise."

Whoever performs their ablution well and prays them at their times, and completes their bowing, prostration, and humility, has a covenant with Allah that He will forgive him. And whoever does not do that has no covenant with Allah; if He wills, He will punish him, and if He wills, He will forgive him.

✧ We asked Ali about the daytime prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, "You would not be able to perform it." They said, "We would like to know it." He said, "He would wait until when the sun was in the east like it is in the west at the time of Asr, he would go to his family and take a midday nap if he wished. Then when the sun declined, he would stand and pray four rak'ahs, and he would pray two rak'ahs after Zuhr and four rak'ahs before Asr."

✧ The Prophet of Allah ﷺ called Salman and said, "The Prophet of Allah wishes to grant you some words from the Most Merciful, by which you may seek His favor and supplicate with them during the night and day: O Allah, I ask You for soundness in faith, and faith in good character, and a salvation followed by success, and mercy from You and well-being, and forgiveness from You and good pleasure."

✧ When you hear the muezzin, say as he says, then invoke blessings upon me; for whoever invokes blessings upon me once, Allah will bless him ten times. And ask Allah for al-Wasilah for me, for it is a station in Paradise which is not fitting for anyone except a servant from among the servants of Allah, and I hope that I am he. Whoever asks al-Wasilah for me, intercession becomes due for him.

✧ The right of a believer over another believer is six traits: to greet him when he meets him, to respond when he sneezes, to accept when he invites him, to visit him when he is ill, to attend his funeral when he dies, and to advise him sincerely when he is absent.

✧ I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what suffices me of this world?' He said, 'Whatever satisfies your hunger and covers your nakedness. And if you have a house to shelter you, that is enough. And if you have a mount, then excellent!'

✧ The sun eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he stood for prayer. He stood for a long time, then bowed for a long time, then stood for a long time, then bowed for a long time, then prostrated, then repeated the same. 'Ikrimah said: Ibn 'Abbas said: I was beside the Prophet ﷺ and did not hear the recitation.

✧ There is no prophet but that he warned his community of the Dajjal, and I warn you of the matter of the Dajjal. He is one-eyed, and my Lord is not one-eyed. Written between his eyes is 'kafir,' which the literate and the illiterate can read. With him are a garden and a fire; his fire is a garden and his garden is a fire.

مَنْ أَهَانَ لِي وَلِيًّا فَقَدِ اسْتَحَلَّ مُحَارَبَتِي، وَمَا تَقَرَّبَ إِلَيَّ عَبْدٌ مِنْ عِبَادِي بِمِثْلِ أَدَاءِ فَرَائِضِي، وَإِنَّ عَبْدِي لَيَتَقَرَّبُ إِلَيَّ بِالنَّوَافِلِ حَتَّى أُحِبَّهُ، فَإِذَا أَحْبَبْتُهُ كُنْتُ عَيْنَيْهِ الَّتِي يُبْصِرُ بِهِمَا، وَأُذُنَيْهِ الَّتِي يَسْمَعُ بِهِمَا، وَيَدَهُ الَّتِي يَبْطِشُ بِهَا، وَرِجْلَيْهِ الَّتِي يَمْشِي بِهِمَا، إِنْ دَعَانِي أَجَبْتُهُ، وَإِنْ سَأَلَنِي أَعْطَيْتُهُ، وَمَا تَرَدَّدْتُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ أَنَا فَاعِلُهُ تَرَدُّدِي عَنْ مَوْتِهِ، وَذَلِكَ أَنَّهُ يَكْرَهُ الْمَوْتَ وَأَنَا أَكْرَهُ مَسَاءَتَهُ
✧ Whoever humiliates a friend of Mine has declared war on Me. None of My servants draws near to Me with the like of fulfilling My obligations, and My servant continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory deeds until I love him. When I love him, I am his eyes with which he sees, his ears with which he hears, his hand with which he strikes, and his legs with which he walks. If he calls Me, I answer him; if he asks Me, I give him. I have never hesitated about anything I do as I hesitate about his death, because he hates death and I hate to sadden him.

✧ I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ praying one night, so I stood behind him praying his prayer. When he sat, he made his standing brief and prayed two short rak'ahs, then gave the greeting. Then he stood and prayed two rak'ahs, then gave the greeting so that I could hear it. Then he turned to me and said: 'Take on of deeds what you can bear,' saying it three times.

✧ When morning came he used to say: 'I have entered the morning, O Lord, calling You to witness, and calling Your angels, Your prophets, Your messengers, and all Your creation to witness my testimony about myself: I testify that You are God, there is no god but You alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is Your servant and messenger. I believe in You and rely on You'—he said it three times.

لَمَّا كَانَتْ فِتْنَةُ ابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ أَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ الْحَرُورِيَّةُ أَنِ ائْتِنَا، فَجَاءَهُمْ، فَقَامَ فَخَطَبَهُمْ، فَحَمِدَ اللهَ، فَقَالُوا: قَدْ عَلِمْنَا أَنَّ هَوَاكَ مَعَنَا، فَتَعَالَ حَتَّى نَجْعَلَكَ خَلِيفَةً، فَقَالَ: وَاللهِ لَقَدْ كَانَتْ بَصِيرَتِي فِيكُمْ قَبْلَ الْيَوْمِ، وَلَقَدِ ازْدَدْتُ فِيكُمْ بَصِيرَةً، وَكَيْفَ أَكُونُ فِيكُمْ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: يَخْرُجُ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ نَاسٌ، يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ
✧ When the fitnah of Ibn al-Zubayr occurred, the Haruriyyah sent to him, 'Come to us.' He came to them, stood, and addressed them. He praised Allah. They said, 'We know that your inclination is with us, so come forward so that we may make you caliph.' He said, 'By Allah, my insight concerning you before today was certain, and today my insight concerning you has increased. How can I be with you when I heard Abu Sa'id al-Khudri say: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: There will emerge from this nation people who will pass through the religion just as an arrow passes through its target.'

✧ We entered upon Umm Salamah, and she said, 'Where are you from?' We said, 'From the people of Kufah.' She said, 'Are you the ones who revile the Prophet ﷺ?' I said, 'I do not know anyone who has reviled the Prophet ﷺ.' She said, 'Rather, you curse 'Ali and those who love him, and the Messenger of Allah used to love him.'

إِنَّ اللهَ جَلَّ ذِكْرُهُ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ آدَمَ قَبَضَ مِنْ صُلْبِهِ قَبْضَتَيْنِ، فَوَقَعَ كُلُّ طَيِّبٍ فِي يَمِينِهِ وَكُلُّ خَبِيثٍ بِيَدِهِ الْأُخْرَى، فَقَالَ: هَؤُلَاءِ أَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ وَلَا أُبَالِي، وَهَؤُلَاءِ أَصْحَابُ الْجَنَّةِ، وَهَؤُلَاءِ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ، ثُمَّ أَعَادَهُمْ فِي صُلْبِ آدَمَ، فَهُمْ يُنْسَلُونَ عَلَى ذَاكَ الْآنَ
✧ Indeed, when Allah—may His mention be exalted—created Adam, He grasped two handfuls from his loins. Every good one fell into His right hand, and every vile one into His other hand. Then He said: “These are the people of the right, and I do not care; these are the people of Paradise, and these are the people of the Fire.” Then He returned them to Adam's loins, and they are being produced upon that until now.

✧ I entered upon 'A'ishah and with her was a blind man; she was cutting citron for him and feeding it to him with honey. I said: Who is this, O Mother of the Believers? She said: This is Ibn Umm Maktum. He came to the Messenger of God ﷺ while 'Utbah and Shaybah were with him, and he turned to them, so it was revealed: 'He frowned and turned away because the blind man came to him.' She said: Ibn Umm Maktum.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade ten traits: dyeing gray hair, plucking it, using saffron (as a dye), letting the lower garment hang below the ankles, tying amulets, playing with dice, seeking refuge by means of incantations (ta‘widhat), wearing a gold ring, displaying adornment inappropriately, withdrawing semen from its proper place, and harming a child without making it unlawful.

✧ He entered ihram for Hajj and Umrah together. When he appeared from al-Qadisiyyah, two riders passed by him while he was reciting the talbiyah for Hajj and Umrah together. One of them said: 'Do you not hear?' The other said: 'Leave him; he is more astray than his camel.' I was deeply affected by that, and I traveled on until I met someone who informed me about them. I said: 'Who are these two riders?' He said: 'This is Salman b. Rabi‘ah al-Bahili and Zayd b. Suhan.' I came to Madinah and went to ‘Umar and told him what they had said. He said: 'They erred and you were right; you have been guided to the Sunnah of your Prophet ﷺ.' Then he sent for them and forbade them.

✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to ask him about wiping over the khuffs. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have come to ask you about knowledge.' He said: 'The angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge out of love for what he seeks. And about which knowledge do you ask?' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, about wiping over the khuffs.' He said: 'Yes. For the resident, one day and one night; and for the traveler, three days, from defecation or urination. Then renew your wudu.'

لَمَّا افْتَتَحَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَكَّةَ قَالَ: إِنَّ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ حَرَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ شُرْبَ الْخَمْرِ وَثَمَنَهَا، وَحَرَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَكْلَ الْمَيْتَةِ وَثَمَنَهَا، وَحَرَّمَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْخَنَازِيرَ وَأَكْلَهَا وَثَمَنَهَا ". وَقَالَ: " قُصُّوا الشَّوَارِبَ، وَأَعْفُوا اللِّحَى، وَلَا تَمْشُوا فِي الْأَسْوَاقِ إِلَّا وَعَلَيْكُمُ الْأُزُرُ، إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ عَمِلَ سُنَّةَ غَيْرِنَا
✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Makkah, he said: 'Allah and His Messenger have forbidden you the drinking of wine and its price, and forbidden you the eating of carrion and its price, and forbidden you pigs, their eating, and their price.' And he said: 'Trim the mustaches, let the beards grow, and do not walk in the markets except with lower garments on you. Indeed, he is not of us who practices a custom other than ours.'

دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى عُمَرَ وَمَعَهُ أُنَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ، فَقَالَ: أَمُؤْمِنُونَ أَنْتُمْ ؟ فَسَكَتُوا - ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ - فَقَالَ عُمَرُ فِي آخِرِهِمْ: نَعَمْ، نُؤْمِنُ عَلَى مَا أَتَيْتَنَا بِهِ، وَنَحْمَدُ اللهَ فِي الرَّخَاءِ، وَنَصْبِرُ عَلَى الْبَلَاءِ، وَنُؤْمِنُ بِالْقَضَاءِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " مُؤْمِنُونَ وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon 'Umar with some people from his companions and said: 'Are you believers?' They remained silent—three times—then 'Umar said at the last of them: 'Yes, we believe in what you have brought us, we praise Allah in ease, we are patient in affliction, and we believe in the divine decree.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Believers, by the Lord of the Ka'bah.'

إِنَّهُ لَيَبْلُغُ مِنْ عَدْلِ اللهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ حَتَّى يَقْتَصَّ لِلْجَمَّاءِ مِنْ ذَاتِ الْقَرْنِ
✧ Indeed, Allah's justice on the Day of Resurrection will reach such an extent that He will exact retribution for the hornless sheep from the horned one.

خَطَبَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ النَّاسَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ عَلَى مِنْبَرِ الْمَدِينَةِ، فَقَالَ فِي خُطْبَتِهِ: إِنَّ فِي جَنَّاتِ عَدْنٍ قَصْرًا لَهُ خَمْسُمِائَةِ بَابٍ، عَلَى كُلِّ بَابٍ خَمْسَةُ آلَافٍ مِنَ الْحُورِ الْعِينِ، لَا يَدْخُلُهُ إِلَّا نَبِيٌّ، ثُمَّ نَظَرَ إِلَى قَبْرِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: هَنِيئًا لَكَ يَا صَاحِبَ الْقَبْرِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَوْ صِدِّيقٌ، ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ إِلَى قَبْرِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، فَقَالَ: هَنِيئًا لَكَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَوْ شَهِيدٌ
✧ Umar b. al-Khattab addressed the people one day on the pulpit of Madinah and said in his sermon: 'Indeed, in the Gardens of Eden there is a palace with five hundred gates, at each gate five thousand houris with wide eyes; none enters it except a prophet.' Then he looked at the grave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'Congratulations to you, O companion of the grave.' Then he said: 'Or a truthful one.' Then he turned to the grave of Abu Bakr and said: 'Congratulations to you, O Abu Bakr.' Then he said: 'Or a martyr.'

قُلْتُ لِأُمِّ سَلَمَةَ: مَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُ دُعَاءِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ؟ فَقَالَتْ: " يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ، ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِكَ "، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، مَا أَكْثَرَ دُعَاءَكَ هَذَا ؟ قَالَ: إِنَّ الْقُلُوبَ بَيْنَ أُصْبُعَيْنِ مِنْ أَصَابِعِ الرَّحْمَنِ، مَا شَاءَ أَزَاغَ، وَمَا شَاءَ أَقَامَ
✧ I said to Umm Salamah: What was the most frequent supplication of the Prophet ﷺ? She said: “O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.” I said: O Messenger of God, why is this supplication of yours so frequent? He said: “Indeed, the hearts are between two fingers of the fingers of the Most Merciful; whichever He wills, He causes to deviate, and whichever He wills, He keeps firm.”

✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Messenger of God, the hyena has devoured us. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Indeed, the world will be opened up for you, and would that my community not wear silk brocade.”

يُؤْتَى الرَّجُلُ فِي قَبْرِهِ، فَإِذَا أُتِيَ مِنْ قِبَلِ رَأْسِهِ دَفَعَتْهُ تِلَاوَةُ الْقُرْآنِ، وَإِذَا أُتِيَ مِنْ قِبَلِ يَدَيْهِ دَفَعَتْهُ الصَّدَقَةُ، وَإِذَا أُتِيَ مِنْ قِبَلِ رِجْلَيْهِ دَفَعَهُ مَشْيُهُ إِلَى الْمَسَاجِدِ، وَالصَّبْرُ حَجَزَهُ "، فَقَالَ: أَمَا إِنِّي لَوْ رَأَيْتُ خَلِيلًا كُنْتُ صَاحِبَهُ
✧ A man will be approached in his grave. If he is approached from the direction of his head, his recitation of the Qur’an will repel it; if he is approached from the direction of his hands, his charity will repel it; and if he is approached from the direction of his feet, his walking to the mosques will repel it, and patience will be his shield.” He said: “Indeed, if I were to see a close friend I would be his companion.”
