✧ I witnessed Umar b. al-Khattab while he was addressing the people. He said, 'O people, a time has come upon me when I thought that whoever recited the Quran desired Allah and what is with Him. Now it seems to me that some people recite it desiring thereby people and desiring thereby the world. Verily, desire Allah with your deeds. We only knew you when the revelation was descending, and when the Prophet ﷺ was among us, and when Allah informed us of your news. Now the revelation has stopped and the Prophet of Allah has gone. We only know you by what we say to you. Whoever we see good from, we think good of him and love him for it. Whoever we see evil from, we think evil of him and hate him for it. Your secrets are between you and your Lord. I only send my governors to teach you your religion and to teach you your Sunnah. I do not send them to beat your backs or to take your wealth. Whoever is troubled by any of that, let him bring it to me. By the One in Whose hand is Umar's soul, I will surely give you retribution from him.' He said, 'Amr b. al-As stood up and said, 'O Commander of the Faithful, what do you think if you send one of your governors and he disciplines a man from his subjects and beats him, will you give retribution from him?' He said, 'Yes, by the One in Whose hand is Umar's soul, I will surely give retribution from him. Should I not give retribution when I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ give retribution from himself? Do not beat the Muslims and humiliate them, do not withhold their rights and make them disbelieve, do not send them to the frontiers and tempt them, and do not station them in the forests and waste them.'
