✧ Umar b. al-Khattab appointed Ibn Abd al-Harith over the people of Makkah. Umar arrived and Nafi b. Abd al-Harith met him, having appointed Abd al-Rahman b. Abza as his successor over the people of Makkah. Umar became angry until he stood up in the stirrup and said: Do you appoint Abd al-Rahman b. Abza over the people of God? He said: I found him the most versed of them in the Book of God and the most knowledgeable of them in the religion of God. Umar then humbled himself for it until he settled back on his saddle and said: If you say that, I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: God will raise peoples by this religion and abase others by it.
