✧ When he was struck, Abd Allah b. Umar said to him, 'Will you not appoint a successor, O Commander of the Faithful?' He said, 'I do not find anyone more deserving of this matter than those with whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was pleased when he passed away.' He named Ali, Uthman, Talhah, al-Zubayr, Abd al-Rahman b. Awf, and Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas. He said, 'Let Abd Allah b. Umar witness them, but he has no share in the matter. Whomever they appoint as successor is the caliph after me. If it falls to Sa'd, then good; otherwise, let the caliph after me seek his assistance, for I did not remove him due to weakness or treachery.'
