✧ A man came to Umar while he was at Arafah and said, 'O Commander of the Faithful, I have come from Kufah and I left a man there dictating the masahif from his memory.' He said, 'Umar became angry and swelled up until he almost filled the space between the two sides of the saddle. He said, 'Woe to you! Who is he?' He said, 'Abd Allah b. Mas'ud.' Umar kept calming down and concealing his anger until he returned to his previous state. Then he said, 'Woe to you! By Allah, I do not know of anyone among the people more deserving of that than him. I will tell you about that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would often spend the night conversing with Abu Bakr regarding some affair of the Muslims. One night he conversed with him while I was with him. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left walking, and we walked with him. There was a man standing and praying in the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood listening to his recitation. When we were about to recognize the man, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever would like to recite the Quran fresh as it was revealed, let him recite it according to the recitation of Ibn Umm Abd.' He said, 'Then the man sat down supplicating, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began saying, 'Ask and you shall be given.' Umar said, 'I said to myself, By Allah, I will go to him in the morning and give him the glad tidings.' He said, 'I went to him in the morning to give him the glad tidings, but I found that Abu Bakr had preceded me to him and given him the glad tidings. By Allah, I never raced him to any good but that he preceded me to it.'
