✧ Four verses were revealed concerning me. I obtained a sword and brought it to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of God, I have obtained a sword." Then this verse was revealed: "They ask you about the spoils of war. Say: The spoils of war belong to God and the Messenger" [Q 8:1]. A man prepared food and invited us, and we drank wine until we became intoxicated. The Anṣār and Quraysh boasted to one another, the Anṣār saying: "We are better," and Quraysh saying: "We are better." Then a man among them stood up and struck my nose, and Saʿd's nose was struck. Then this verse was revealed: "O you who believe, indeed wine, gambling, stone altars, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it" [Q 5:90]. He said: My mother said: "Do you not claim that God commands you to maintain ties of kinship and be dutiful to parents? By God, I will not eat food or drink drink until you disbelieve." So she would not eat food or drink drink, and when they wanted to feed her, they would pry open her mouth with a stick and put food and drink into it. Then this verse was revealed: "And We have enjoined upon man goodness to his parents; but if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, then do not obey them" [Q 29:8]. The Messenger of God ﷺ came in to me while I was ill, and I said: "Shall I bequeath all of my wealth?" He said: "No." I said: "Half?" He forbade me. I said: "A third?" He remained silent, and the people adopted that.

He seated me in front of him, and I sat and threw arrows, saying: "O Allah, an arrow with which I strike Your enemy," and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was saying: "O Allah, answer Sa'd's supplication. O Allah, make his shot accurate. Go on, Sa'd, may my father and mother be your ransom."
