أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ خَرَجَ إِلَى الشَّامِ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ بِسَرْغٍ لَقِيَهُ أُمَرَاءُ الْأَجْنَادِ فَأَخْبَرُوهُ، مِنْهُمْ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ وَأَصْحَابُهُ فَأَخْبَرُوهُ أَنَّ الْوَبَاءَ قَدْ وَقَعَ بِالشَّامِ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: قَالَ عُمَرُ: ادْعُ لِيَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ فَدَعَاهُمْ فَاسْتَشَارَهُمْ فَأَخْبَرَهُمْ أَنَّ الْوَبَاءَ قَدْ وَقَعَ بِالشَّامِ. فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: خَرَجْتَ لِأَمْرٍ لَا نَرَى لَكَ أَنْ تَرْجِعَ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ بِهِ بِأَرْضٍ فَلَا تَقْدَمُوا عَلَيْهِ وَإِذَا وَقَعَ بِأَرْضٍ وَأَنْتُمْ بِهَا فَلَا تَخْرُجُوا فِرَارًا مِنْهُ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ عُمَرُ وَانْصَرَفَ
✧ Umar b. al-Khattab set out for Syria until, when he was at Sargh, the commanders of the armies met him and informed him—among them Abu Ubayda b. al-Jarrah and his companions—that the plague had broken out in Syria. Ibn Abbas said: Umar said, "Summon the Muhajirun for me." So he summoned them and consulted them, informing them that the plague had broken out in Syria. Some of them said, "You have set out for a matter, and we do not think you should turn back." Then Abd al-Rahman b. Awf said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'If you hear of it in a land, do not go forward to it; and if it breaks out in a land while you are there, do not leave fleeing from it.'" So Umar praised Allah and turned back.

أَنَّ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ عَوْفٍ عَادَ أَبَا الرَّدَّادِ فَقَالَ: مَا عَلِمْتُ، أَبَرُّهُمْ وَأَوْصَلُهُمْ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ ؟ قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: " يَقُولُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: أَنَا الرَّحْمَنُ وَهِيَ الرَّحِمُ شَقَقْتُ لَهَا مِنِ اسْمِي فَمَنْ وَصَلَهَا وَصَلْتُهُ وَمَنْ قَطَعَهَا بَتَتُّهُ ".
✧ Abd al-Rahman b. Awf visited Abu al-Raddad and said: "What do I know? The most dutiful and most connecting of them is Abu Muhammad?" Abd al-Rahman said: "I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'God, Mighty and Majestic, says: I am al-Rahman, and it is the womb (al-rahim). I have derived for it a name from My name. Whoever maintains it, I will maintain him, and whoever severs it, I will cut him off.'"

" إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَشَكَّ فِي الْوَاحِدَةِ أَوِ الثِّنْتَيْنِ فَلْيَجْعَلْهَا وَاحِدَةً، وَإِذَا شَكَّ فِي الثِّنْتَيْنِ وَالثَّلَاثِ فَلْيَجْعَلْهَا ثِنْتَيْنِ حَتَّى يَكُونَ الْوَهَمُ فِي الزِّيَادَةِ، ثُمَّ لْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمْ ".
✧ When one of you prays and doubts whether it is one or two, let him regard it as one. And when he doubts between two and three, let him regard it as two, so that the doubt is in the addition. Then let him prostrate twice, then give the salutation.

✧ Ibrahim b. Sa'd narrated to us, from Muhammad b. Ishaq, from Makhul, from Kurayb, from Ibn Abbas, from Abd al-Rahman b. Awf. And the one who inserted a man between Muhammad b. Ishaq and Makhul: in his narration he came with the like of the narration of Ibrahim b. Sa'd and added a man whom Ibrahim omitted. And sufficient for you regarding the memory of Ismail b. Ibrahim is his precision.

أَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِيَدِي فَانْطَلَقَ إِلَى النَّخْلِ فَوَجَدَ فِيهِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ابْنَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخَذَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَوَضَعَهُ فِي حِجْرِهِ فَدَمَعَتْ عَيْنَاهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ: يَا بُنَيَّ إِنِّي لَا أَمْلِكُ لَكَ مِنَ اللهِ شَيْئًا فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ: تَبْكِي أَوَلَمْ تَنْهَ عَنِ الْبُكَاءِ ؟ قَالَ: إِنَّمَا نَهَيْتُ عَنِ النَّوْحِ عَنْ صَوْتَيْنِ أَحْمَقَيْنِ فَاجِرَيْنِ: صَوْتٌ عِنْدَ نِعْمَةٍ لَعِبٌ وَلَهْوٌ وَمَزَامِيرُ شَيْطَانَ، وَصَوْتٌ عِنْدَ مُصِيبَةٍ خَمْشُ وُجُوهٍ وَشَقُّ جُيُوبٍ وَرَنَّةُ شَيْطَانَ إِنَّهُ لَا يُرْحَمُ مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمُ لَوْلَا أَنَّهُ حَقٌّ وَوَعْدُ صِدْقٍ وَأَنَّهُمَا سَبِيلٌ مَأْتِيَّةٌ لَا بُدَّ مِنْهَا حَتَّى يَلْحَقَ آخِرُنَا بِأَوَّلِهِ لَحَزِنَّا حُزْنًا أَشَدَّ مِنْ هَذَا يَعْنِي عَلَيْهِ، وَإِنَّا بِهِ لَمَحْزُونُونَ تَبْكِي الْعَيْنُ وَيَحْزَنُ الْقَلْبُ وَلَا نَقُولُ مَا يُسْخِطُ الرَّبَّ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ".
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ took me by the hand and went to the palm grove, where he found Ibrahim, the son of the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ took him and placed him in his lap, and his eyes shed tears. Then he said: "O my son, I cannot avail you against God in anything." I said: "O Messenger of God, do you weep? Did you not forbid weeping?" He said: "I only forbade wailing, two foolish and sinful voices: a voice at the time of blessing—play, amusement, and the flutes of Satan—and a voice at the time of calamity—scratching of faces, tearing of garments, and the lament of Satan. Indeed, the one who does not show mercy will not be shown mercy. Were it not that it is a truth and a true promise, and that they are a path that must be traversed, from which there is no escape, until the last of us joins the first, we would have grieved with grief more intense than this—meaning for him. And indeed we are saddened by him. The eye weeps and the heart grieves, but we do not say what displeases the Lord, Mighty and Majestic."

بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى عِكْرِمَةَ بْنِ أَبِي جَهْلٍ: مَنْ ضَرَبَ أَبَاكَ؟ فَقَالَ عِكْرِمَةُ: الَّذِي قَطَعَ أَبِي رِجْلَهُ فَقَضَى بِسَلَبِهِ لِمُعَاذِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ جَمُوحٍ.

✧ From 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf that he married a woman for a gold weight of a date pit. I came to the Prophet ﷺ, and he saw upon me the cheerfulness of a wedding. I said: 'I have married a woman from the Ansar for a gold weight of a date pit.'

✧ "O 'Abd al-Rahman, indeed you are among the wealthy, and you will not enter Paradise except crawling, so lend to Allah and He will release your feet." 'Abd al-Rahman said: 'What shall I lend or give?' Then 'Abd al-Rahman went out, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent to him saying: 'Tell 'Abd al-Rahman to host the guest, feed the poor, and give to the beggar, for that will suffice him for much of what he is in.'

كَانَ لَا يُفَارِقُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَوْ بَابَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ خَمْسَةٌ أَوْ أَرْبَعَةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَخَرَجَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَاتَّبَعْتُهُ فَدَخَلَ حَائِطًا مِنْ حِيطَانِ الْأَسْوَافِ فَصَلَّى فَسَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ فَقُلْتُ: قَبَضَ اللهُ رُوحَ رَسُولِهِ ﷺ لَا أَرَاهُ أَبَدًا فَحَزِنْتُ وَبَكَيْتُ فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَرَآنِي فَدَعَانِي فَقَالَ: مَا الَّذِي بِكَ أَوْ مَا الَّذِي أَرَابَكَ؟ فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَطَلْتَ السُّجُودَ فَقُلْتُ قَدْ قَبَضَ اللهُ رَسُولَهُ لَا أَرَاهُ أَبَدًا فَحَزَنْتُ وَبَكَيْتُ قَالَ: سَجَدْتُ هَذِهِ السَّجْدَةَ شُكْرًا لِرَبِّي فِيمَا أَبْلَانِي فِي أُمَّتِي، ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ قَالَ: مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَيْكَ مِنْهُمْ صَلَاةً كُتِبَتْ لَهُ عَشْرُ حَسَنَاتٍ
✧ The Prophet ﷺ was never without five or four of his companions at his side or at his door. One day he went out and I followed him. He entered one of the gardens of al-Aswaf and prayed, then prostrated and prolonged the prostration. I said to myself: 'Allah has taken the soul of His Messenger ﷺ; I will never see him again.' I grieved and wept. He raised his head, saw me, and called me. He said: 'What is wrong with you?' or 'What made you doubt?' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, you prolonged the prostration, so I said that Allah had taken His Messenger and I would never see him again. I grieved and wept.' He said: 'I made this prostration in gratitude to my Lord for what He has bestowed on me regarding my nation.' Then he said: 'Whoever among them sends one prayer upon you, ten good deeds are written for him.'

أَنَّهُ أَتَى بِطَعَامٍ - قَالَ شُعْبَةُ: أَظُنُّهُ كَانَ صَائِمًا - فَقَالَ: قُتِلَ حَمْزَةُ فَلَمْ نَجِدْ مَا نُكَفِّنُهُ وَهُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنِّي، وَقُتِلَ مُصْعَبُ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ وَهُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنِّي فَلَمْ نَجِدْ لَهُ مَا نُكَفِّنُهُ بِهِ وَقَدْ أَصَبْنَا مِنْهَا مَا أَصَبْنَا، قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ: " أَخْشَى أَنْ يَكُونَ قَدْ عُجِّلَتْ لَنَا حَسَنَاتُنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا " قَالَ سَعْدٌ: " وَأَظُنُّهُ لَمْ يَأْكُلْ
✧ He was brought food - Shu'bah said: I think he was fasting - and he said: 'Hamzah was killed and we could not find anything to shroud him, though he is better than me. Mus'ab b. 'Umayr was killed and he is better than me, yet we could not find anything to shroud him. But now we have obtained from this world what we have obtained.' 'Abd al-Rahman said: 'I fear that our good deeds have been hastened for us in this world.' Sa'd said: 'I think he did not eat.'

بَعَثَتِ ابْنَةٌ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنَّ ابْنَتِي مَغْلُوبَةٌ، فَقَالَ لِلرَّسُولِ: قُلْ لَهَا: إِنَّ لِلهِ مَا أَخَذَ وَلِلَّهِ مَا أَبْقَى، ثُمَّ بَعَثْتُ إِلَيْهِ الثَّانِيَةَ فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهَا مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ بَعَثْتُ إِلَيْهِ الثَّالِثَةَ فَجَاءَهَا فِي نَاسٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ، فَأُخْرِجَتْ إِلَيْهِ الصَّبِيَّةُ وَنَفْسُهَا تَقَعْقَعُ فِي صَدْرِهَا، فَرَقَّ عَلَيْهَا فَذَرَفَتْ عَيْنَاهُ فَفَطِنَ بِهِ بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِهِ، وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَيْهِ حِينَ ذَرَفَتْ عَيْنَاهُ فَقَالَ: " مَا لَكُمْ تَنْظُرُونَ، رَحْمَةٌ يَضَعُهَا اللهُ حَيْثُ يَشَاءُ إِنَّمَا يَرْحَمُ اللهُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الرُّحَمَاءَ ".
✧ A daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent word that her daughter was dying. He said to the messenger: 'Tell her: To Allah belongs what He takes and to Allah belongs what He leaves.' Then she sent to him a second time, and he replied to her similarly. Then she sent to him a third time, and he came to her with a group of his companions. The child was brought out to him, her soul rattling in her chest. He felt compassion for her, and his eyes filled with tears. Some of his companions noticed this while they were watching him. He said: 'What is the matter with you that you look? It is a mercy that Allah places wherever He wills. Indeed, Allah shows mercy to those of His servants who are merciful.'

بَيْنَا أَنَا وَاقِفٌ فِي الصَّفِّ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ فَنَظَرْتُ عَنْ يَمِينِي، وَعَنْ شِمَالِي، فَإِذَا أَنَا بَيْنَ غُلَامَيْنِ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ حَدِيثَةٌ أَسْنَانُهُمَا فَتَمَنَّيْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ بَيْنَ أَضْلَعَ مِنْهُمَا، فَقَالَ لِي أَحَدُهُمَا: يَا عَمِّ، هَلْ تَعْرِفُ أَبَا جَهْلٍ ؟ قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ وَمَا حَاجَتُكَ إِلَيْهِ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي ؟ قَالَ: أُخْبِرْتُ أَنَّهُ يَشْتِمُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَوْ يَسُبُّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَئِنْ رَأَيْتُهُ لَا يُفَارِقُ سَوَادِي سَوَادَهُ حَتَّى يَمُوتَ الْأَعْجَزُ مِنَّا فَتَعَجَّبْتُ لِذَلِكَ فَغَمَزَنِي الْآخَرُ، فَقَالَ مِثْلَهَا، فَعَجِبْتُ مِنْ قَوْلِهِمَا فَلَمْ أَنْشَبْ أَنْ نَظَرْتُ إِلَى أَبِي جَهْلٍ يَجُولُ أَوْ يَزُولُ فِي النَّاسِ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُمَا: أَلَا إِنَّ هَذَا صَاحِبُكُمَا الَّذِي تَسْأَلَانِي عَنْهُ فَابْتَدَرَاهُ بِأَسْيَافِهِمَا فَضَرَبَاهُ حَتَّى قَتَلَاهُ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرَاهُ فَقَالَ: أَيُّكُمَا قَتَلَهُ ؟ فَقَالَ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا: أَنَا قَتَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ: هَلْ مَسَحْتُمَا أَسْيَافَكُمَا ؟ فَقَالَا: لَا. فَنَظَرَ فِي السَّيْفَيْنِ فَقَالَ: كِلَاكُمَا قَتَلَهُ. وَقَضَى بِسَلَبِهِ لِمُعَاذِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْجَمُوحِ وَهُمَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ عَفْرَاءَ، وَمُعَاذُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْجَمُوحِ اللَّذَانِ ضَرَبَا أَبَا جَهْلٍ.
✧ While I was standing in the ranks on the day of Badr, I looked to my right and to my left, and I saw that I was between two young lads of the Ansar, their teeth newly grown. I wished I were between stronger men than they. One of them said to me: 'O uncle, do you know Abu Jahl?' I said: 'Yes, what do you need from him, O son of my brother?' He said: 'I have been told that he insults the Prophet ﷺ or reviles him. By Him in whose hand is my soul, if I see him, my body will not part from his until the more incapable of us dies.' I was amazed at that. Then the other one nudged me and said something similar. I was amazed at their words. It was not long before I saw Abu Jahl moving about among the people. I said to them: 'Indeed, this is the man you were asking me about.' They both rushed at him with their swords and struck him until they killed him. Then they went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him. He said: 'Which of you killed him?' Each of them said: 'I killed him.' He said: 'Did you wipe your swords?' They said: 'No.' He looked at the two swords and said: 'Both of you killed him.' He awarded his spoils to Mu'adh b. 'Amr b. al-Jamuh; and the two were Mu'adh b. 'Afra' and Mu'adh b. 'Amr b. al-Jamuh, the ones who struck Abu Jahl.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ انْتَهَى إِلَيْهِ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَتَأَخَّرَ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ أَنْ مَكَانَكَ فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِصَلَاةِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ ".
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to him while he was leading the people in prayer. He wanted to step back, but the Prophet gestured to him to stay in place. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed following the prayer of 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf.

✧ Umayyah b. Khalaf said to me, “O servant of God, who was the man marked with an ostrich feather on his chest on the day of Badr?” I said, “That was the uncle of the Messenger of God ﷺ, Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib.” He said, “That is the one who did those deeds to us.”

✧ ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Darāwardī narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥumayd, from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ in a similar manner, but he did not say from his grandfather. This hadith includes Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ and makes him the tenth. We know of it being narrated only from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, although more than one has narrated it in mursal form.

✧ When death approached the Prophet ﷺ, they said, “O Messenger of God, advise us.” He said, “I enjoin you to honor the earliest forerunners, then their descendants after them, then their descendants after them, then their descendants after them. If you do not do so, neither an obligatory nor a supererogatory deed will be accepted from you.”

✧ The short spear used to be brought out for the Messenger of God ﷺ on the two ʿĪds so that he would pray facing it. He used to say thirteen takbīrs, and Abū Bakr and ʿUmar—may God’s mercy and good pleasure be upon them—used to do likewise.

شَهِدْتُ حِلْفَ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ، وَزُهْرَةَ وَتَيْمٍ فَمَا يَسُرُّنِي أَنِّي نَقَضْتُهُ وَلِيَ حُمْرُ النَّعَمِ، وَلَوْ دُعِيتُ بِهِ الْيَوْمَ لَأَجَبْتُ عَلَى أَنْ نَأْمُرَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ، وَنَنْهَى عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَنَأْخُذَ لِلْمَظْلُومِ مِنَ الظَّالِمِ
✧ I witnessed the alliance of Banū Hāshim, Zuhrah, and Taym. It would not please me to break it even in exchange for red camels, and if I were called to it today, I would respond—on the condition that we enjoin good, forbid evil, and secure the rights of the wronged from the wrongdoer.

✧ The qasāmah oath in cases of bloodshed was instituted on the day of Khaybar. That is because a man from the Anṣār, one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, went missing during the night. The Anṣār came and said, “Our companion is writhing in his blood.” He said, “Do you know his killer?” They said, “No, but the Jews killed him.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Choose fifty men from among them and let them swear by God with their strongest oaths; then take the blood money from them.” So they did.

نَزَلَ الْإِسْلَامُ بِالْكُرْهِ وَالشِّدَّةِ، فَوَجَدْنَا خَيْرَ الْخَيْرِ فِي الْكَرَاهَةِ، فَخَرَجْنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مِنْ مَكَّةَ فَجَعَلَ لَنَا فِي ذَلِكَ الْعَلَاءَ وَالظَّفَرَ، وَخَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى بَدْرٍ عَلَى الْحَالِ الَّتِي ذَكَرَ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى وَإِنَّ فَرِيقًا مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ لَكَارِهُونَ يُجَادِلُونَكَ فِي الْحَقِّ بَعْدَمَا تَبَيَّنَ كَأَنَّمَا يُسَاقُونَ إِلَى الْمَوْتِ وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ وَإِذْ يَعِدُكُمُ اللهُ إِحْدَى الطَّائِفَتَيْنِ أَنَّهَا لَكُمْ وَتَوَدُّونَ أَنَّ غَيْرَ ذَاتِ الشَّوْكَةِ تَكُونُ لَكُمْ وَالشَّوْكَةُ قُرَيْشٌ فَجَعَلَ اللهُ - عَزَّ وَجَلَّ - لَنَا فِي ذَلِكَ الْعُلَا وَالظَّفَرَ فَوَجَدْنَا خَيْرَ الْخَيْرِ فِي الْكُرْهِ
✧ Islam came with dislike and hardship, and we found the best of good in disliked things. We went out with the Prophet ﷺ from Makkah and He gave us in that high rank and victory, and we went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ to Badr in the condition that God, Blessed and Exalted, mentioned: 'And indeed, a party of the believers disliked it, disputing with you about the truth after it had become clear, as if they were being driven to death while they looked on. And when God promised you one of the two groups that it would be yours, and you wished that the one without thorns would be yours'—and the thorns are Quraysh. So God, Mighty and Majestic, gave us in that high rank and victory, and we found the best of good in disliked things.

✧ I had a promise from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When Qurayzah was conquered, I came so he could fulfill what he had promised me. I heard him saying: “Whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will enrich him; whoever is content, Allah will make him content.” I said to myself: No doubt, I will not ask him for anything.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to look for a man from the Ansar and called him. The Ansari came out with his head dripping water. He said: “What is the matter with you?” He said: “I feared I would keep you waiting, so I poured water over myself and then came out.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Did you ejaculate?” He said: “No.” He said: “If you do that, do not perform ghusl, but wash what of you touched the woman and perform wudu as you do for prayer.”

✧ “After me, none will care for you except the truthful, patient ones.” Abd al-Rahman said: So I sold something—he named it—to Abdullah b. Sa'd b. Abi Sarh for forty thousand and divided it among them, meaning among the wives of the Prophet ﷺ, may Allah have mercy on them.

✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Makkah, he went to al-Ta'if and besieged it for seventeen or nineteen days. Then he stood as a khutba, praised Allah, extolled Him, then said: “I enjoin you to good treatment of my family, and your appointed meeting is the Hawd. By the One in whose hand is my soul, you must establish prayer and pay zakat, or I will send to you a man from me—or like myself—who will strike your necks.” Then he took Ali by the hand and said: “This one.”

✧ Whoever says in a day, when he rises in the morning and when he enters the evening: 'There is no god but Allah, alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise. He gives life and causes death, and He is Ever-Living and does not die. In His hand is all good, and He is over all things capable,' his sins will be forgiven, even if they were more than the foam of the sea.

الْهِجْرَةُ خَصْلَتَانِ أَنْ تَهْجُرَ السَّيِّئَاتِ إِحْدَاهُمَا وَالْأُخْرَى أَنْ تُهَاجِرَ إِلَى اللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ﷺ وَلَا تَنْقَطِعُ الْهِجْرَةُ مَا قُبِلَتِ التَّوْبَةُ، وَلَا تَزَالُ التَّوْبَةُ مَقْبُولَةً حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنَ الْمَغْرِبِ، فَإِذَا طَلَعَتْ طُبِعَ عَلَى كُلِّ قَلْبٍ بِمَا فِيهِ، وَكَفَى النَّاسَ الْعَمَلُ
✧ Emigration comprises two qualities: one of them is that you abandon evil deeds, and the other is that you emigrate to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. Emigration will not cease as long as repentance is accepted, and repentance will continue to be accepted until the sun rises from the west. When it rises, a seal will be placed on every heart according to what it contains, and people will have enough of their deeds.

كُنْتُ كَاتِبًا لِجَزْءِ بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الْأَحْنَفِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ، إِذْ جَاءَنَا كِتَابُ عُمَرَ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ بِشَهْرٍ: اقْتُلُوا كُلَّ سَاحِرٍ وَسَاحِرَةٍ، وَفَرِّقُوا بَيْنَ كُلِّ ذِي مَحْرَمٍ مِنَ الْمَجُوسِ، وَانْهُوهُمْ عَنِ الزَّمْزَمَةِ " فَقَتَلْنَا فِي يَوْمٍ ثَلَاثَ سَوَاحِرَ، وَفَرَّقْنَا بَيْنَ كُلِّ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْمَجُوسِ وَحُرْمَتِهِ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ، وَصَنَعَ طَعَامًا كَثِيرًا فَدَعَاهُمْ فَعَرَضَ السَّيْفَ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ، فَأَكَلُوا وَلَمْ يُزَمْزِمُوا، وَأَلْقَوْا وِقْرَ بَغْلٍ أَوْ بَغْلَيْنِ مِنَ الْوَرِقِ، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ عُمَرُ أَخَذَ مِنَ الْمَجُوسِ الْجِزْيَةَ حَتَّى شَهِدَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَخَذَهَا مِنْ مَجُوسِ هَجَرَ
✧ I was a scribe for Jaz' b. Mu'awiyah, reporting from al-Ahnaf b. Qays, when a letter from Umar came to us a month before his death: 'Kill every sorcerer and sorceress, and separate every man among the Magians from his close relative, and forbid them from zamzamah (low murmuring).' So we killed three sorceresses in one day, and we separated every Magian man from his wife in the Book of Allah. He prepared a large amount of food and invited them, then he placed a sword on his thigh. So they ate and did not murmur. They threw down a load of a mule or two mules of silver. Umar had not taken the jizyah from the Magians until Abd al-Rahman b. Awf testified that the Prophet ﷺ took it from the Magians of Hajar.
