✧ When the people turned away from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the retreat on the day of Uhud, I said: I will remain, and either I will be martyred or I will survive until I meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. While I was like that, suddenly there was a man with his face covered, and I did not know who he was. The polytheists came forward towards him, and when I thought that they had overcome him, he filled his hand with pebbles and threw them in their faces. They retreated on their heels, going backwards, until they crossed over and came to the side of the mountain. He did that several times, and I did not know who he was. Al-Miqdad was between me and him. While I was about to ask al-Miqdad about him, al-Miqdad said: "O Sa'd, this is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ calling you." I said: "Where is he?" Al-Miqdad pointed to him, and I stood up, and it was as if no harm had touched me. He said: "Where have you been since today, O Sa'd?" He seated me in front of him, and I sat and threw arrows, saying: "O Allah, an arrow with which I strike Your enemy," and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was saying: "O Allah, answer Sa'd's supplication. O Allah, make his shot accurate. Go on, Sa'd, may my father and mother be your ransom." There was no arrow I threw but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Allah, make his shot accurate and answer his supplication. Go on, Sa'd." When I finished my quiver, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ emptied his quiver for me and handed me an arrow with no fletching, and it was more effective than the others.
