✧ On the day of the conquest of Makkah, the Messenger of God ﷺ granted safety to the people except for four men and two women, and he said: "Kill them even if you find them clinging to the curtains of the Kaʿbah: ʿIkrimah b. Abī Jahl, ʿAbd Allāh b. Khaṭal, Miqyas b. Ṣubābah, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd b. Abī Sarḥ." As for ʿAbd Allāh b. Khaṭal, he was found clinging to the curtains of the Kaʿbah, and Saʿd and ʿAmmār raced to him; Saʿd beat ʿAmmār and killed him. As for Miqyas b. Ṣubābah, the people caught him in the market and killed him. As for ʿIkrimah b. Abī Jahl, he set sail on the sea, and they were struck by a storm. The people of the ship said: "Be sincere, for your deities will not avail you anything." ʿIkrimah said: "If nothing saves me in the sea except sincerity, then nothing other than it will save me on land. O God, I make a covenant with You: if You deliver me from what I am in, I will surely go to Muḥammad and place my hand in his hand." He said: So he accepted Islam. He said: As for ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Sarḥ, ʿUthmān interceded for him. When the Messenger of God ﷺ called the people to pledge allegiance, he brought him and stood him before the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of God, accept the pledge of ʿAbd Allāh." He raised his head and looked at him, refusing each time, then accepted his pledge after three times. Then he turned and praised God and extolled Him, and said: "Was there not among you a rightly guided man who, when he saw me withhold my hand from his pledge, would kill him?" They said: "O Messenger of God, if only you had signaled to us with your eyes." He said: "It is not proper for a prophet to have a deceitful look."
