حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدَةَ قَالَ: أَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ يَعْنِي ابْنَ بَهْدَلَةَ، عَنْ مُصْعَبِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ سَعْدٍ قَالَ:

قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَيُّ النَّاسِ أَشَدُّ بَلَاءً قَالَ: الْأَنْبِيَاءُ ثُمَّ الْأَمْثَلُ فَالْأَمْثَلُ يُبْتَلَى الْعَبْدُ عَلَى حَسَبِ دِينِهِ، فَإِنْ كَانَ صُلْبًا اشْتَدَّ بَلَاؤُهُ وَإِنْ كَانَ فِي دِينِهِ رِقَّةٌ ابْتُلِيَ عَلَى قَدْرِ ذَلِكَ، فَمَا تَبْرَحُ الْبَلَايَا بِالْعَبْدِ حَتَّى تَدَعَهُ يَمْشِي عَلَى الْأَرْضِ مَا عَلَيْهِ خَطِيئَةٌ

✧ I said: "O Messenger of God, which people are most severely tested?" He said: "The prophets, then the next best, then the next best. A servant is tested according to his religion. If he is firm in his religion, his test is severe; and if his religion is weak, he is tested according to that. Trials do not cease to afflict the servant until they leave him walking on the earth with no sin upon him."
