✧ The people of Kufah complained about Sa'd in everything, until they said: 'He does not know how to pray properly.' He said: Umar sent for him and said: 'They have complained about you in everything, even claiming that you do not know how to pray properly.' Sa'd said: 'By Allah, I used to lead them in prayer in the manner of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, without deviating from it. I would pray the two 'Isha' prayers, prolonging the first two rak'ahs and shortening the last two.' Umar said: 'That is what is expected of you, Abu Ishaq.' Then he sent with him a man or two men to ask about him among the people of Kufah. When he arrived, he did not leave any mosque without asking its people, and they would mention good and say what is right, until he came to a mosque of Banu 'Abs. A man from among them, called Abu Sa'dah, stood up and said: 'Since you have adjured us, indeed Sa'd did not march with the raiding party, did not judge equitably, and did not distribute fairly.' Sa'd stood up and said: 'By Allah, I will supplicate against you with supplications: O Allah, if this servant of Yours is lying, then prolong his life, intensify his poverty, and expose him to trials.' Abd al-Malik b. Umayr said: I later saw him as an old man, afflicted. When he was asked, 'How are you this morning?' he would say: 'An old man, poor, and afflicted; the supplication of Sa'd has befallen me.' Sa'd said: I saw him after that as he was accosting slave girls in the streets, pinching them, his eyebrows having fallen over his eyes from old age.
