حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ: نَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْقَطَّانُ قَالَ: نَا أَبُو حَيَّانَ التَّيْمِيُّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ، نَسِيتُ اسْمَهُ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ

أَنَّهُ كَانَتْ لَهُ حَاجَةٌ إِلَى أَبِيهِ، فَانْطَلَقَ فَوَصَلَ كَلَامًا، ثُمَّ أَتَى سَعْدًا، فَكَلَّمَهُ بِكَلَامٍ لَمْ يَكُنْ سَمِعَهُ مِنْهُ قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قَالَ لَهُ سَعْدٌ: أَفَرَغْتَ مِنْ حَاجَتِكَ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ قَالَ: مَا كُنْتَ أَبْعَدَ مِنْ حَاجَتِكَ مِنِّي الْآنَ، وَلَا كُنْتُ أَزْهَدَ فِيكَ مِنِّي الْآنَ، سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ: يَكُونُ قَوْمٌ يَأْكُلُونَ بِأَلْسِنَتِهِمْ كَمَا تَأْكُلُ الْبَقَرُ بِأَلْسِنَتِهَا

Translation

✧ He had a need from his father, so he went and rehearsed some speech. Then he came to Saʿd and spoke to him with words he had never heard from him before. When he finished, Saʿd said to him, "Have you finished with your need?" He said, "Yes." He said, "You were never farther from your need than you are from me now, and I have never been more indifferent to you than I am now. I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: 'There will be people who eat with their tongues as cattle eat with their tongues.'"
