✧ I fell ill in Makkah in the year of the conquest. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit me. I said: O Messenger of Allah, I have much wealth and I have only one daughter. Shall I give two-thirds of my wealth in charity? He said: No. I said: Half? He said: No. I said: A third? He said: A third, and a third is much. If you leave your heirs wealthy, it is better for you than leaving them poor, begging from people. You will not spend any expenditure seeking thereby the Face of Allah but you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you raise to your wife's mouth. I said: O Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind after my emigration? He said: If you are left behind after me and you do a deed seeking thereby the Face of Allah and the abode of the Hereafter, you will be rewarded or raised a degree thereby. Perhaps you will be left behind until some people benefit by you and others are harmed by you. O Allah, complete the emigration of my companions and do not turn them back on their heels. But the wretched one is Sa'd b. Khawlah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ grieved for him that he died in Makkah.

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it, and it is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) from him. Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm also narrated it, and there is disagreement about him concerning it: al-Thawrī narrated it from Saʿd, from ʿĀmir b. Saʿd, from his father; and Misʿar said, from Saʿd: "Some of the family of Saʿd narrated to me, from Saʿd." And it is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) from ʿĀmir b. Saʿd, from his father, through the narration of al-Zuhrī and through the narration of Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm.
