al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 1144

✧ Moderation in seeking provision

قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ: أَخْبَرَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنْ زُبَيْدِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الْيَامِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ؓ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ:

لَيْسَ شَيْءٌ يُقَرِّبُكُمْ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ، وَيُبَاعِدُكُمْ مِنَ النَّارِ إِلَّا أَمَرْتُكُمْ بِهِ، وَلَيْسَ شَيْءٌ يُبَاعِدُكُمْ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ، وَيُقَرِّبُكُمْ مِنَ النَّارِ إِلَّا نَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنْهُ، وَإِنَّ الرُّوحَ الْأَمِينَ نَفَثَ فِي رُوعِي أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ نَفْسٍ تَمُوتُ إِلَّا وَقَدْ كَتَبَ اللهُ تَعَالَى رِزْقَهَا، فَاتَّقُوا اللهَ، وَأَجْمِلُوا فِي الطَّلَبِ، وَلَا يَحْمِلَنَّكُمُ اسْتِبْطَاءُ الرِّزْقِ أَنْ تَطْلُبُوهُ بِالْمَعَاصِي، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يُدْرَكُ مَا عِنْدَ اللهِ تَعَالَى إِلَّا بِطَاعَتِهِ

Translation

✧ There is nothing that brings you closer to Paradise and distances you from the Fire except that I have commanded you with it, and there is nothing that distances you from Paradise and brings you closer to the Fire except that I have forbidden you from it. And the Trustworthy Spirit breathed into my heart that no soul dies except that Allah Almighty has written its provision, so fear Allah and be moderate in seeking provision, and let not the delay of provision drive you to seek it by disobedience, for what is with Allah Almighty is only attained through obedience to Him.
