✧ The Prohibition of Taking the Best of Wealth in Zakat and Transgressing in Charity

قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ: حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ يَحْيَى، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ حَبَّانَ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ:

إِنَّ عُمَرَ ؓ مَرَّتْ بِهِ غَنَمٌ مِنْ غَنَمِ الصَّدَقَةِ، فِيهَا شَاةٌ ذَاتُ ضَرْعٍ ضَخْمٍ، فَقَالَ: مَا أَظُنُّ أَهْلَ هَذِهِ أَعْطَوْهَا وَهُمْ طَائِعُونَ، لَا تَأْخُذُوا حَزَرَاتِ أَمْوَالِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، لَا تَفْتِنُوا النَّاسَ، نَكِّبُوا عَنِ الطَّعَامِ

Translation

✧ Umar ؓ passed by a flock of zakat sheep, among them a ewe with a large udder. He said: 'I do not think the owners gave this willingly. Do not take the best of the Muslims' wealth. Do not tempt people. Avoid taking food (as zakat).'
