✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when I drew near him I heard him say: "This is the chief of the desert dwellers." I greeted him, then sat down and said: "O Messenger of Allah, what wealth is there for which I will not be held accountable, from a guest who visits me or dependents if they become many?" He ﷺ said: "Excellent wealth is forty camels, and the most is sixty, and woe to the owners of hundreds, except one who gives in their milk, and their aid, and lends their backs for riding, and lends their stallion for breeding, and slaughters their fat ones, and feeds the contented beggar and the destitute." He said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, how noble and excellent are these traits! Is it not permissible in the valley where I am, because of the abundance of my camels?" He said: "How do you deal with the milch camel given as a gift?" I said: "I give a hundred as gifts every year." He said: "How do you deal with lending?" I said: "The camels go out and the people go out, and whoever takes hold of a camel's head goes away with it." He said: "How do you deal with lending camels for riding?" I said: "I lend young she-camels in milk and old ones past breeding." He said: "Is that dearer to you, or the wealth of your master?" I said: "Rather my own wealth." He said: "You have of your wealth only what you eat and consume, or wear and wear out, or give and spend; and what remains is for your master." I said: "For my master?" He said: "Yes." I said: "By Allah, if I remain, I will leave their number small." Al-Hasan said: "And he did so."
