✧ I was the guide of my father Kaʿb b. Malik when he lost his sight. When I went out with him to Friday prayer and he heard the call to prayer, he would pray for Abu Umamah Asʿad b. Zurarah. He continued doing that for a while, never hearing the call to Friday prayer without praying for him and asking forgiveness for him. I said to myself: By God, this is a shortcoming on my part that I do not ask him why, when he hears the call to Friday prayer, he prays for Abu Umamah Asʿad b. Zurarah. So I went out with him one Friday as I used to, and when he heard the call to Friday prayer, he prayed for Abu Umamah and asked forgiveness for him. I said to him: “O my father, why is it that when you hear the call to Friday prayer, you pray for Abu Umamah?” He said: “O my son, he was the first to lead the Friday prayer in Madinah, at Hazm Bani Bayadah, in a place called Naqiʿ al-Khadimat.” I said: “How many were you that day?” He said: “Forty men.”

✧ The sun has not risen nor set on a day better than Friday. Allah guided us to it, and the people went astray from it, and the people are followers for us in it. So it is for us, and for the Jews Saturday, and for the Christians Sunday. Indeed, in it there is an hour which no believer coincides with while praying and asking Allah for something except that He gives it to him.

✧ Indeed, Allah will resurrect the days on the Day of Judgment in their forms, and He will resurrect Friday as radiant and shining. Its people will surround it like a bride being escorted to her honored one. It will shine for them, and they will walk in its light. Their colors will be as white as snow, and their fragrance will spread like musk. They will wade through mountains of camphor. The two heavy ones will look at them, not lowering their gaze in amazement, until they enter Paradise. No one will mix with them except the mu'adhdhins who seek reward.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to stand on Friday and lean his back against a trunk erected in the mosque and deliver the sermon. A Byzantine came and said: 'Shall we make something for you to sit on, as if you were standing?' So he made him a pulpit with two steps, and he would sit on the third. When the Prophet of Allah ﷺ sat on the pulpit, the trunk bellowed like a bull, and the mosque shook with its bellowing out of grief for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ descended from the pulpit to it and embraced it while it was bellowing. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ embraced it, it became silent. Then he said: 'By the One in whose hand is my soul, if I had not embraced it, it would have remained like this until the Hour, out of grief for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that it be buried — meaning the trunk.
