أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبَانَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ:

دَخَلْتُ الْمَسْجِدَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَخْطُبُ، فَجَلَسْتُ قَرِيبًا مِنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، فَقَرَأَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ سُورَةَ بَرَاءَةٌ، فَقُلْتُ لِأُبَيٍّ: مَتَى نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ السُّورَةُ ؟ قَالَ: فَتَجَهَّمَنِي وَلَمْ يُكَلِّمْنِي، ثُمَّ مَكَثْتُ سَاعَةً، ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَتَجَهَّمَنِي وَلَمْ يُكَلِّمْنِي، ثُمَّ مَكَثْتُ سَاعَةً، ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَتَجَهَّمَنِي وَلَمْ يُكَلِّمْنِي، فَلَمَّا صَلَّى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ قُلْتُ لِأُبَيٍّ: سَأَلْتُكَ فَتَجَهَّمْتَنِي وَلَمْ تُكَلِّمْنِي، قَالَ أُبَيٌّ: مَا لَكَ مِنْ صَلَاتِكَ إِلَّا مَا لَغَوْتَ، فَذَهَبْتُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ: يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ، كُنْتُ بِجَنْبِ أُبَيٍّ، وَأَنْتَ تَقْرَأُ بَرَاءَةٌ، فَسَأَلْتُهُ: مَتَى نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ السُّورَةُ ؟ فَتَجَهَّمَنِي وَلَمْ يُكَلِّمْنِي، ثُمَّ قَالَ: مَا لَكَ مِنْ صَلَاتِكَ إِلَّا مَا لَغَوْتَ. قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: " صَدَقَ أُبَيٌّ

✧ I entered the mosque on Friday while the Prophet ﷺ was preaching, and I sat near Ubayy b. Ka'b. The Prophet ﷺ recited Surat Bara'ah, so I said to Ubayy, 'When was this surah revealed?' He frowned at me and did not speak to me. Then I waited for a while, then asked him again, and he frowned at me and did not speak to me. Then I waited for a while, then asked him again, and he frowned at me and did not speak to me. When the Prophet ﷺ finished praying, I said to Ubayy, 'I asked you and you frowned at me and did not speak to me.' Ubayy said, 'You have nothing from your prayer except what you engaged in idle talk.' So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'O Prophet of Allah, I was next to Ubayy while you were reciting Bara'ah, and I asked him, "When was this surah revealed?" He frowned at me and did not speak to me, then said, "You have nothing from your prayer except what you engaged in idle talk."' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Ubayy spoke the truth.'
