✧ Two men from the people of Iraq came to him and asked him about bathing on Friday: Is it obligatory? Ibn ʿAbbās said to them: Whoever bathes, it is better and purer. I will tell you why bathing began: In the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the people were needy, wearing wool, and watering palm trees on their backs. The mosque was narrow with a low roof. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out on a Friday on a scorching hot summer day, and his pulpit was short—only three steps. He addressed the people, and the people sweated in the wool, and their odors arose—the smell of sweat and wool—until they were harming one another, until their odors reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was on the pulpit. He said: O people, when this day comes, bathe, and let each of you apply the best perfume or oil he finds.
