أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ هَيَّاجٍ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مَالِكِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الْأَرْحَبِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبْجَرَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ وَاصِلِ بْنِ حَيَّانَ قَالَ: قَالَ أَبُو وَائِلٍ:

خَطَبَنَا عَمَّارُ بْنُ يَاسِرٍ، فَأَبْلَغَ وَأَوْجَزَ، فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ قُلْنَا لَهُ: يَا أَبَا الْيَقْظَانِ، لَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتَ وَأَوْجَزْتَ، فَلَوْ كُنْتَ نَفَّسْتَ. قَالَ: إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ طُولَ صَلَاةِ الرَّجُلِ، وَقِصَرَ خُطْبَتِهِ مَئِنَّةٌ مِنْ فِقْهِهِ، فَأَطِيلُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَاقْصُرُوا الْخُطْبَةَ، فَإِنَّ مِنَ الْبَيَانِ سِحْرًا

✧ 'Ammar b. Yasir delivered a sermon to us; he was thorough and concise. When he descended, we said to him: "O Abu al-Yaqzan, you were thorough and concise. If only you had extended it." He said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Indeed, the length of a man's prayer and the brevity of his sermon are a sign of his understanding. So prolong the prayer and shorten the sermon, for some eloquence is magic.'"
