   خَطَّ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ خَطًّا، فَقَالَ: " هَذَا سَبِيلُ اللهِ، ثُمَّ خَطَّ خُطُوطًا عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ، فَقَالَ: " هَذِهِ سُبُلٌ، عَلَى كُلِّ سَبِيلٍ مِنْهَا شَيْطَانٌ يَدْعُو إِلَيْهِ " ثُمَّ تَلَا: وَأَنَّ هَذَا صِرَاطِي مُسْتَقِيمًا الْآيَةَ

   ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ drew a line for us and said: "This is the path of Allah." Then he drew lines on its right and left and said: "These are paths; on every one of them is a devil calling to it." Then he recited: "And this is My path, straight..." the verse.

   أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ، فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ، فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَدُمَ وَمَا حَدُثَ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَحَدَثَ فِيَّ شَيْءٌ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُحْدِثُ لِنَبِيِّهِ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ مَا شَاءَ، وَإِنَّ مِمَّا أَحْدَثَ أَلَّا تَكَلَّمُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ

   ✧ I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and greeted him with salam, but he did not respond to me. Then what is old and what is new seized me, and I said: O Messenger of God, has something happened concerning me? The Messenger of God ﷺ said: God, Mighty and Majestic, brings about for His Prophet whatever He wills of His affair, and among what He has brought about is that you should not speak during the prayer.

   " إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ نَظَرَ فِي قُلُوبِ الْعِبَادِ، فَاخْتَارَ مُحَمَّدًا، فَبَعَثَهُ بِرِسَالَاتِهِ، وَانْتَخَبَهُ بِعِلْمِهِ، ثُمَّ نَظَرَ فِي قُلُوبِ النَّاسِ بَعْدَهُ، فَاخْتَارَ لَهُ أَصْحَابَهُ، فَجَعَلَهُمْ أَنْصَارَ دِينِهِ، وَوُزَرَاءَ نَبِيِّهِ ﷺ، فَمَا رَآهُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ حَسَنًا فَهُوَ عِنْدَ اللهِ حَسَنٌ، وَمَا رَآهُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ قَبِيحًا فَهُوَ عِنْدَ اللهِ قَبِيحٌ

   ✧ "God, Mighty and Majestic, looked into the hearts of the servants, and chose Muhammad, and sent him with His messages, and selected him by His knowledge. Then He looked into the hearts of people after him, and chose for him his companions, and made them supporters of His religion and ministers of His Prophet ﷺ. Whatever the believers see as good is good in God's sight, and whatever the believers see as ugly is ugly in God's sight."

   ✧ "The servant does not cease to be truthful and strive for truthfulness until he is recorded with God as a siddiq, and he does not cease to lie and strive for lying until he is recorded with God as a kadhdhab."

   كُنَّا إِذَا صَلَّيْنَا خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قُلْنَا: السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ، السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ، السَّلَامُ عَلَى مِيكَائِيلَ، فَالْتَفَتَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: لَا تَقُولُوا: السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ، فَإِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ هُوَ السَّلَامُ، وَلَكِنْ قُولُوا: التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلهِ، الصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

   ✧ When we prayed behind the Messenger of God ﷺ, we used to say: Peace be upon God, peace be upon Gabriel, peace be upon Michael. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ turned to us and said: Do not say 'Peace be upon God,' for God, Mighty and Majestic, is al-Salam. But say: 'Greetings are for God, and prayers and good things. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of God and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of God. I bear witness that there is no god but God, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.'

   قَدْ جَاءَ ابْنُ النَّوَّاحَةِ وَابْنُ أُثَالٍ رَسُولَيْنِ لِمُسَيْلِمَةَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ لَهُمَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " تَشْهَدَانِ أَنِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ ؟ " فَقَالَا: " نَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُسَيْلِمَةَ رَسُولُ اللهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: آمَنْتُ بِاللهِ وَرُسُلِهِ، لَوْ كُنْتُ قَاتِلًا رَسُولًا لَقَتَلْتُكُمَا

   ✧ Ibn al-Nawwahah and Ibn Uthal came as messengers of Musaylimah to the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to them: "Do you both testify that I am the Messenger of God?" They said: "We testify that Musaylimah is the Messenger of God." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "I believe in God and His messengers. If I were to kill a messenger, I would kill you both."

   ✧ "God, Mighty and Majestic, took Abraham as a close friend, and your companion is the close friend of God. The Prophet of God ﷺ is the most honored of creatures in the sight of God, Mighty and Majestic, on the Day of Resurrection." Then he recited: "It may be that your Lord will raise you to a praiseworthy station."

    سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ عَبْدَ اللهِ عَنْ قَوْلِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ مِنْ مَاءٍ غَيْرِ آسِنٍ أَوْ يس، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: كُلَّ الْقُرْآنِ قَدْ قَرَأْتَ غَيْرَ هَذَا ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: إِنَّ قَوْمًا يَقْرَءُونَهُ يَنْثُرُونَهُ نَثْرَ الدَّقَلِ، لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ، إِنِّي لَأَعْرِفُ السُّوَرَ النَّظَائِرَ الَّتِي كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقْرُنُ بَيْنَهُنَّ، قَالَ: فَأَمَرْنَا عَلْقَمَةَ، فَسَأَلَهُ، فَقَالَ: عِشْرِينَ سُورَةً مِنَ الْمُفَصَّلِ، كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقْرُنُ بَيْنَ كُلِّ سُورَتَيْنِ فِي رَكْعَةٍ

    ✧ A man asked 'Abdullah about the saying of God, Mighty and Majestic: 'from water not stagnant' or 'yasin.' 'Abdullah said: Have you read the entire Qur'an except this? He said: Yes. He said: There are people who recite it, scattering it like the scattering of bad dates; it does not go beyond their collarbones. I know the pairs of surahs that the Messenger of God ﷺ used to combine. He said: So we told 'Alqama, and he asked him. He said: Twenty surahs from the Mufassal; the Messenger of God ﷺ used to combine every two surahs in one rak'ah.

    ✧ We said: O Messenger of God, will we be held accountable for what we did in the Jahiliyyah? The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Whoever does good in Islam will not be held accountable for what he did in the Jahiliyyah and Islam, and whoever does evil in Islam will be held accountable for what he did in the Jahiliyyah and Islam.

    مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينِ صَبْرٍ لِيَقْتَطِعَ بِهَا مَالًا هُوَ فِيهَا فَاجِرٌ لَقِيَ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ غَضْبَانُ، قَالَ: فَخَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا الْأَشْعَثُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ الْكِنْدِيُّ، فَقَالَ: مَا حَدَّثَكُمْ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ؟ قَالَ: فَقُلْنَا: حَدِيثَ كَذَا وَكَذَا، قَالَ: صَدَقَ، نَزَلَتْ فِيَّ، خَاصَمْتُ رَجُلًا فِي بِئْرٍ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " بَيِّنَتُكَ أَوْ يَمِينُهُ "، قُلْتُ: إِذًا يَحْلِفَ وَهُوَ آثِمٌ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينِ صَبْرٍ هُوَ فِيهَا فَاجِرٌ أَوْ آثِمٌ لِيَقْتَطِعَ بِهَا مَالًا لَقِيَ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ غَضْبَانُ، وَنَزَلَتْ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلا الْآيَةَ

    ✧ Whoever swears a false oath to seize thereby property, being sinful in it, will meet God, Mighty and Majestic, while He is angry with him. He said: Then al-Ash'ath b. Qays al-Kindi came out to us and said: What did Abu 'Abd al-Rahman narrate to you? We said: Such-and-such a hadith. He said: He spoke the truth. It was revealed concerning me. I disputed with a man over a well before the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Your evidence or his oath.' I said: Then he will swear and he is sinful. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Whoever swears a false oath, being sinful or wicked in it, to seize thereby property, will meet God, Mighty and Majestic, while He is angry with him. And it was revealed: 'Indeed, those who purchase with the covenant of God and their oaths a small price...' the verse.

    ✧ I asked the Messenger of God ﷺ: Which sin is greatest? He said: That you ascribe a rival to God while He created you. He said: Then which? He said: That you kill your child for fear that he will eat your property. He said: Then which? He said: That you commit adultery with your neighbor's wife.

    ✧ And he recited this verse: 'And those who do not call upon another god besides God, and do not kill the soul which God has forbidden except by right, and do not commit adultery.'

    " لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ أَغْيَرَ مِنَ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، وَلِذَلِكَ حَرَّمَ الْفَوَاحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ، وَلَا أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ الْمَدْحُ مِنَ اللهِ، وَلِذَلِكَ مَدَحَ نَفْسَهُ، وَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ الْمَعَاذِيرُ مِنَ اللهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى

    ✧ No one is more protective of honor than God, Mighty and Majestic, and for that reason He forbade immoralities, what is apparent of them and what is hidden. And no praise is more beloved to Him than praising God, and for that reason He praised Himself. And no one loves excuses more than God, Blessed and Exalted.

    أَنَّ رَجُلًا جَاءَ إِلَى ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، فَقَالَ: قَرَأْتُ الْمُفَصَّلَ اللَّيْلَةَ فِي رَكْعَةٍ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: هَذًّا كَهَذِّ الشِّعْرِ ! لَقَدْ عَرَفْتُ السُّوَرَ النَّظَائِرَ الَّتِي كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقْرُنُ بَيْنَهُنَّ، فَذَكَرَ عِشْرِينَ سُورَةً مِنَ الْمُفَصَّلِ ; سُورَتَيْنِ سُورَتَيْنِ فِي رَكْعَةٍ

    ✧ A man came to Ibn Mas'ud and said: I recited the Mufassal tonight in one rak'ah. 'Abdullah said: Babbling like the babbling of poetry! I knew the pairs of surahs that the Messenger of God ﷺ used to combine. He mentioned twenty surahs from the Mufassal, two surahs in each rak'ah.

    صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَزَادَ أَوْ نَقَصَ - فَأَمَّا النَّاسِي لِذَلِكَ فَإِبْرَاهِيمُ عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، أَوْ عَلْقَمَةُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ - فَلَمَّا قَضَى صَلَاتَهُ قِيلَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَحَدَثَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ مِنْ حَدَثٍ ؟ قَالَ: " لَا، وَمَا ذَاكَ ؟ " فَذَكَرْنَا لَهُ الَّذِي صَنَعَ، فَثَنَى رِجْلَهُ وَاسْتَقْبَلَ الْقِبْلَةَ، ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا بِوَجْهِهِ، فَقَالَ: لَوْ حَدَثَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ حَدَثٌ أَنْبَأْتُكُمْ، وَلَكِنِّي بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ، أَنْسَى كَمَا تَنْسَوْنَ، فَإِذَا نَسِيتُ فَذَكِّرُونِي، وَأَيُّكُمْ مَا شَكَّ فِي صَلَاتِهِ فَلْيَنْظُرْ أَحْرَى ذَلِكَ لِلصَّوَابِ فَلْيُتِمَّ عَلَيْهِ، ثُمَّ لِيُسَلِّمْ، وَلْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ

    ✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ led us in prayer and added or omitted something — the one who forgot whether it was Ibrahim from 'Alqama, or 'Alqama from 'Abdullah — when he finished his prayer it was said: O Messenger of God, has something new happened in the prayer? He said: "No, and what is that?" So we mentioned to him what he had done. He bent his leg and faced the qibla, then prostrated twice, then turned his face toward us and said: If something had happened in the prayer I would have informed you, but I am a human being like you; I forget as you forget, so if I forget, remind me. And whichever of you is uncertain about his prayer, let him consider what is most likely correct and complete it on that basis, then say the salam, and prostrate twice.

'Uthman said to 'Abdullah: Shall I marry you to — Abu Dawud said: Shu'ba or someone else said in this chain: — Shall I marry you to a young woman who will remind you of what you have forgotten? 'Abdullah said, so that 'Alqama could hear: The Messenger of God ﷺ told us: Whoever among you is able to marry, let him marry, and if not, let him fast, for fasting is a shield for him.

    ✧ Ibn Mas'ud took his hand, and Ibn Mas'ud mentioned that the Prophet ﷺ took his hand and taught him the tashahhud: Greetings are for God, and prayers and good things. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of God and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of God. I bear witness that there is no god but God, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. When you have said that, your prayer is complete; if you wish, stand, and if you wish, remain seated.

He said: What do I have to do with this world? What am I and this world? I and this world are only like a rider who took shade under a tree, then moved on and left it."

    ✧ “The people are saying that you were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the night of the jinn.” He said: “None of us accompanied him, but we lost him in Makkah, so we searched for him in the mountain passes and the valleys. I said: ‘He has been assassinated or snatched away.’ So we spent the worst night a people ever spent. When morning came, we saw him coming toward us. We said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, we spent the worst night a people ever spent; we lost you.’ He said: ‘The caller of the jinn came to me, so I went and recited the Quran to them.’ He went with us and showed us their dwellings and their fires. They asked him for provision, and he said: ‘Every bone upon which the name of Allah has not been mentioned, when it falls into your hands, will have more meat than it did; and every piece of dung is fodder for your animals.’ Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us to use those two for istinja’, and he said: ‘They are provision for your brothers among the jinn.’”

    ✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that he had been intimate with a woman short of intercourse. The Prophet ﷺ did not respond to him until Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: “And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and in the approaches of the night”—the verse. A man said: “O Messenger of Allah, is this specifically for him or for all the people?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Rather, for all the people.”

    ✧ We asked Abdullah about the souls of the martyrs—and had it not been for Abdullah we would have found no one to tell us. He said: The souls of the martyrs are with Allah in the crops of green birds, which roam in the rivers of Paradise wherever they wish, then return to lanterns beneath the Throne. He, Mighty and Majestic, says to them: “What do you desire?” They say: “We desire nothing”—he said it three times—“except to be returned to the world and killed.”

That is His saying, exalted is He: 'The day when the sky will bring visible smoke.'

    " إِنَّ خَلْقَ أَحَدِكُمْ لَيُجْمَعُ فِي بَطْنِ أُمِّهِ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً، ثُمَّ يَكُونُ عَلَقَةً مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ يَكُونُ مُضْغَةً مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ يُبْعَثُ إِلَيْهِ مَلَكٌ، فَيُؤْمَرُ بِأَرْبَعِ كَلِمَاتٍ: رِزْقِهِ، وَأَجَلِهِ، وَعَمَلِهِ، وَشَقِيٍّ أَوْ سَعِيدٍ، ثُمَّ يُنْفَخُ فِيهِ الرُّوحُ، وَاللهِ إِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ - أَوْ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ مِنْكُمْ - لَيَعْمَلُ عَمَلَ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ حَتَّى مَا يَكُونُ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهَا إِلَّا ذِرَاعٌ، فَيَسْبِقُ عَلَيْهِ الْكِتَابُ، فَيَعْمَلُ عَمَلَ أَهْلِ النَّارِ فَيَدْخُلُهَا، وَإِنَّ الرَّجُلَ مِنْكُمْ - أَوْ إِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ - لَيَعْمَلُ عَمَلَ أَهْلِ النَّارِ حَتَّى مَا يَكُونُ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهَا إِلَّا ذِرَاعٌ، فَيَسْبِقُ عَلَيْهِ الْكِتَابُ، فَيَعْمَلُ عَمَلَ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ فَيَدْخُلُهَا

    ✧ Verily, the creation of one of you is gathered in his mother's womb for forty nights, then he becomes a clinging clot for the like of that, then he becomes a lump of flesh for the like of that. Then an angel is sent to him and is commanded with four words: his provision, his term, his deeds, and whether he is wretched or blessed. Then the spirit is breathed into him. By God, one of you—or a man among you—may do the deeds of the people of the Garden until there is only a cubit between him and it, then the decree overtakes him, and he does the deeds of the people of the Fire and enters it. And a man among you—or one of you—may do the deeds of the people of the Fire until there is only a cubit between him and it, then the decree overtakes him, and he does the deeds of the people of the Garden and enters it.

    ✧ We did not know what to say in every two rak'ahs except to glorify, magnify, and praise our Lord. Muhammad ﷺ was taught the openings of good and its comprehensive words—or its comprehensive words and its conclusions—so he commanded us to say in every two rak'ahs: All greetings, prayers, and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger. Then let each of you choose the supplication that pleases him most and supplicate with it.

He said: No. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, never cursed a people and transformed them so that they would have descendants. But this is a creation that already existed. When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, became angry with the Jews and transformed them, He made them like those creatures.

And do not be impressed by a man who earns wealth unlawfully, for if he spends it or gives it in charity, it will not be accepted from him; if he leaves it, it will not be blessed for him; and if any of it remains, it will be provision for him to the Fire.

    ✧ Whoever would be pleased to meet Allah, Mighty and Majestic, tomorrow as a Muslim, let him maintain these five prayers where the call to them is given. Allah has prescribed for your Prophet ﷺ the ways of guidance, and they are among the ways of guidance. I do not think any of you but has a place of prayer in his house where he prays. If you were to pray in your houses and abandon your mosques, you would abandon the Sunnah of your Prophet ﷺ. If you abandoned the Sunnah of your Prophet, you would go astray. No Muslim performs ablution and does it well, then walks to the prayer, except that a good deed is written for him with every step he takes, a degree is raised for him thereby, and a sin is expiated from him thereby—so much so that we used to take short steps. I have seen us when none stayed behind from it except a hypocrite whose hypocrisy was known. I have seen a man supported between two men until he was placed in the row.

    ✧ We were on a military expedition in which 'Abd al-Rahman b. Yazid was present, and it spread among the people that some disliked saying “Surat al-Baqarah” and “Al 'Imran,” saying instead “the surah in which the cow is mentioned” and “the surah in which the family of 'Imran is mentioned.” 'Abd al-Rahman said: I was with 'Abdullah at Mina when he entered the valley, and he placed the jamrah on his right eyebrow, then faced the Ka'bah and threw seven pebbles, saying Allahu akbar with each pebble. When he finished he said: From here—by the One besides whom there is no god—did the one upon whom Surat al-Baqarah was sent down throw.

    ✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a tent, about forty of us, and he said: “Would you be pleased to be a quarter of the people of Paradise?” They said: Yes. He said: “Would you be pleased to be a third of the people of Paradise?” Then he said: “By the One in whose hand is my soul, I hope that you will be half of the people of Paradise. That is because Paradise is entered only by a Muslim soul, and you among the polytheists are but like a white hair on the hide of a black bull, or a black hair on the hide of a red bull.”

    ✧ While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was prostrating, with some people of Quraysh around him, and there was the afterbirth of a camel, they said: Who will take the afterbirth of this slaughtered camel—or camel—and throw it on the Prophet's back? 'Uqbah b. Abi Mu'ayt came and threw it on the Prophet's back ﷺ. Fatimah came, removed it from his back, and cursed those who had done that. 'Abdullah said: I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ invoke against them except on that day, when he said: O Allah, deal with the leaders of Quraysh. O Allah, deal with Abu Jahl b. Hisham, 'Utbah b. Rabi'ah, Shaybah b. Rabi'ah, 'Uqbah b. Abi Mu'ayt, and Umayyah b. Khalaf—or Ubayy b. Khalaf. Shu'bah was uncertain. 'Abdullah said: I saw them killed on the day of Badr and thrown into the well—or he said: into a pit—except that Ubayy b. Khalaf—or Umayyah b. Khalaf—was a heavy man, and he fell apart before he could be brought to the pit.

Mas'ud for a year, and I never heard him say during it: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,” except that one day a hadith came up, and he said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,” and distress overcame him, and sweat began to pour from his eyes, then he said: “Either more than that, or less than that, or close to that.”

    ✧ When it was the day of Badr, I came upon Abu Jahl while he was struck down. I struck him with my sword, but it did nothing, and his sword flew off. I struck him again, then I came to the Prophet ﷺ on a hot day, as if I were lifted from the ground. I said, 'O Messenger of God, this enemy of God, Abu Jahl, has been killed.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'By God, has he been killed?' I said, 'By God, he has been killed. Come with us and I will show him to you.' He came to him and looked at him, then said, 'This was the Pharaoh of this community.'

'Abdullah said, 'I, by God—may my father and mother be my ransom—I remember it. I had in my hand some small dates with which I was having my pre-dawn meal, hiding behind the rear of my saddle from the dawn, and that was when the moon rises.'

Then he gave the iqamah, and we prayed 'Asr. Then he gave the iqamah, and we prayed Maghrib. Then he gave the iqamah, and we prayed 'Isha'. Then he said, 'There is no group on earth remembering God, Mighty and Majestic, other than you.'

    ✧ We were with the Messenger of God ﷺ on a journey. A man entered a thicket and took out from it the egg of a red sparrow. The red sparrow came fluttering over the head of the Messenger of God ﷺ and his companions. He said, 'Which of you has bereaved this one?' A man from the group said, 'I took its egg.' He said, 'Return it, return it, out of mercy for it.'

    ✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ taught us the sermon of need: 'Praise belongs to God—or indeed praise belongs to God—we seek His help and His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in God from the evils of our own selves. Whomever God guides, none can lead astray, and whomever He leads astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but God, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger.' Then he recites the three verses: 'O you who believe, fear God as He should be feared' to the end of the verse. And he recites: 'O people, fear your Lord, who created you from a single soul' the verse. Then he recites: 'O you who believe, fear God and speak a right word; He will set right for you your deeds' to the end of the verse. Then you speak about your need.

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ used to say often: 'Glory be to You, our Lord, and with Your praise. O God, forgive me.' When the chapter 'When God's help and victory comes' was revealed—'then glorify with praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness; indeed He is ever accepting of repentance'—he said: 'Glory be to You and with Your praise. O God, forgive me. Indeed You are the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.'

    ✧ While I was praying one night, the Prophet ﷺ passed by me, along with Abu Bakr and Umar. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Ask, and you will be given.' Umar said: 'So Abu Bakr and I raced. I never raced Abu Bakr to any good except that I found he had beaten me to it. Then I went off and said: I have a supplication that I almost never abandon: O Allah, I ask You for faith that does not turn back, and coolness of the eye that does not cease—or he said: does not perish—and the companionship of the Prophet ﷺ in the highest Garden of Eternity.'

    دَخَلْتُ مَسْجِدَ الْكُوفَةِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ، فَإِذَا رَجُلٌ قَدِ اجْتَمَعَ النَّاسُ عَلَيْهِ، وَلَوِ اسْتَطَاعُوا أَنْ يُدْخِلُوهُ بُطُونَهُمْ لَأَدْخَلُوهُ ; مِنْ حُبِّهِمْ إِيَّاهُ، وَإِذَا هُوَ يُحَدِّثُ، قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: لَا تُكْثِرُوا الشَّهَادَةَ، قُتِلَ فُلَانٌ شَهِيدًا، وَقُتِلَ فُلَانٌ شَهِيدًا، فَإِنْ كُنْتُمْ لَا بُدَّ مُثْنِينَ عَلَى قَوْمٍ أَنَّهُمُ اسْتُشْهِدُوا، فَأَثْنُوا عَلَى سَرِيَّةٍ بَعَثَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى حَيٍّ، فَلَمْ يَلْبَثُوا إِلَّا يَسِيرًا حَتَّى قَامَ فِينَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: أَلَا إِنَّ إِخْوَانَكُمْ قَدْ لَقُوا رَبَّهُمْ، أَلَا وَإِنَّهُمْ سَأَلُوا اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَنْ يُبَلِّغَ عَنْهُمْ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَدْ رَضُوا وَرَضِيَ عَنْهُمْ، فَإِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُثْنِينَ عَلَى قَوْمٍ أَنَّهُمْ شُهَدَاءُ فَأَثْنُوا عَلَى أُولَئِكَ

    ✧ I entered the mosque of Kufa on Friday, and there was a man whom the people had gathered around. If they could have put him inside their bellies, they would have, out of love for him. And there he was, narrating. He said: 'Abdullah said: Do not multiply testimony, saying "So-and-so was killed as a martyr, and so-and-so was killed as a martyr." If you must praise a people as having been martyred, then praise the expedition that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent to a tribe. They did not remain but a short while before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood among us and said: "Indeed, your brothers have met their Lord. Indeed, they asked Allah, mighty and glorious, to convey on their behalf that they were pleased, and He was pleased with them. So if you are to praise a people as martyrs, then praise those."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Who did this?' A man from the group said: 'I did.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Put it out, put it out.'

     " بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى النَّجَاشِيِّ وَنَحْنُ ثَمَانُونَ رَجُلًا، وَمَعَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، وَعُثْمَانُ بْنُ مَظْعُونٍ، وَبَعَثَتْ قُرَيْشٌ عُمَارَةَ وَعَمْرَو بْنَ الْعَاصِ، وَبَعَثُوا مَعَهُمَا هَدِيَّةً إِلَى النَّجَاشِيِّ، فَلَمَّا دَخَلَا عَلَيْهِ سَجَدَا لَهُ، وَدَفَعَا إِلَيْهِ الْهَدِيَّةَ، وَقَالَا: إِنَّ نَاسًا مِنْ قَوْمِنَا رَغِبُوا عَنْ دِينِنَا، وَقَدْ نَزَلُوا أَرْضَكَ، قَالَ: فَأَيْنَ هُمْ ؟ قَالُوا: هُمْ فِي أَرْضِكَ، فَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهِمُ النَّجَاشِيُّ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ جَعْفَرٌ: أَنَا خَطِيبُكُمُ الْيَوْمَ، فَاتَّبَعُوهُ حَتَّى دَخَلُوا عَلَى النَّجَاشِيِّ، فَلَمْ يَسْجُدُوا لَهُ، فَقَالَ: مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَسْجُدُونَ لِلْمَلِكِ ؟ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بَعَثَ إِلَيْنَا نَبِيَّهُ ﷺ فَأَمَرَنَا أَلَّا نَسْجُدَ إِلَّا لِلهِ، فَقَالَ النَّجَاشِيُّ: وَمَا ذَاكَ ؟ فَأُخْبِرَ، فَقَالَ عَمْرُو بْنُ الْعَاصِ: إِنَّهُمْ يُخَالِفُونَكَ فِي عِيسَى، قَالَ: فَمَا تَقُولُونَ فِي عِيسَى وَأُمِّهِ ؟ قَالَ: نَقُولُ كَمَا قَالَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، هُوَ رُوحُ اللهِ وَكَلِمَتُهُ أَلْقَاهَا إِلَى الْعَذْرَاءِ الْبَتُولِ، الَّتِي لَمْ يَمْسَسْهَا بَشَرٌ، وَلَمْ يَفْرِضْهَا وَلَدٌ، فَتَنَاوَلَ النَّجَاشِيُّ عُودًا فَقَالَ: يَا مَعْشَرَ الْقِسِّيسِينَ وَالرُّهْبَانِ، مَا تَزِيدُونَ عَلَى مَا يَقُولُ هَؤُلَاءِ مَا يَزِنُ هَذِهِ، فَمَرْحَبًا بِكُمْ وَبِمَنْ جِئْتُمْ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ، فَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ لَهُ أَنَّهُ نَبِيٌّ، وَلَوَدِدْتُ أَنِّي عِنْدَهُ فَأَحْمِلُ نَعْلَيْهِ، أَوْ قَالَ: أَخْدِمُهُ، فَانْزِلُوا حَيْثُ شِئْتُمْ مِنْ أَرْضِي، فَجَاءَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ فَبَادَرَ، فَشَهِدَ بَدْرًا

     ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us to the Negus, and we were eighty men. With us were Ja'far b. Abi Talib and Uthman b. Maz'un. Quraysh sent Umara and Amr b. al-As, and they sent a gift with them to the Negus. When they entered upon him, they prostrated to him and presented the gift. They said: 'Some people from our tribe have turned away from our religion and have settled in your land.' He said: 'Where are they?' They said: 'They are in your land.' So the Negus sent for them. Ja'far said: 'I am your spokesman today.' So they followed him until they entered upon the Negus, and they did not prostrate to him. He said: 'What is wrong with you that you do not prostrate to the king?' He said: 'Allah, mighty and glorious, sent His Prophet ﷺ to us and commanded us not to prostrate except to Allah.' The Negus said: 'And what is that?' He was informed, and Amr b. al-As said: 'They disagree with you about Jesus.' He said: 'What do you say about Jesus and his mother?' He said: 'We say as Allah, mighty and glorious, said: He is the Spirit of Allah and His word that He cast to the chaste virgin, whom no human touched and no child rent.' The Negus picked up a stick and said: 'O assembly of priests and monks, you do not add to what they say even the weight of this.' He said: 'Welcome to you and to the one from whom you came. I bear witness that he is a prophet, and I wish I were with him so that I could carry his sandals—or he said: serve him. So settle wherever you wish in my land.' Ibn Mas'ud came and hurried, and he witnessed Badr.

     ✧ We were with the Prophet ﷺ when he smiled. We said: 'O Messenger of Allah, why did you smile?' He said: 'I marvel at the believer and his anxiety over illness. If he knew what is in illness, he would love to remain ill until he meets Allah, mighty and glorious.'

     رَفَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَصَرَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ ثُمَّ خَفَضَهُ، فَقُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مِمَّ صَنَعْتَ هَذَا ؟ قَالَ: عَجِبْتُ لِمَلَكَيْنِ مِنَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ نَزَلَا إِلَى الْأَرْضِ يَلْتَمِسَانِ عَبْدًا فِي مُصَلَّاهُ فَلَمْ يَجِدَاهُ، ثُمَّ عَرَجَا إِلَى رَبِّهِمَا، فَقَالَا: يَا رَبِّ كُنَّا نَكْتُبُ لِعَبْدِكَ الْمُؤْمِنِ فِي يَوْمِهِ وَلَيْلَتِهِ مِنَ الْعَمَلِ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَوَجَدْنَاهُ قَدْ حَبَسْتَهُ فِي حِبَالَتِكِ، فَلَمْ نَكْتُبْ لَهُ شَيْئًا، فَقَالَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: اكْتُبُوا لِعَبْدِي عَمَلَهُ فِي يَوْمِهِ وَلَيْلَتِهِ، وَلَا تُنْقِصُوهُ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا، عَلَيَّ أَجْرُ مَا حَبَسْتُهُ، وَلَهُ أَجْرُ مَا كَانَ يَعْمَلُ

     ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his gaze to the sky, then lowered it. We said: 'O Messenger of Allah, why did you do that?' He said: 'I marveled at two angels from among the angels who descended to the earth seeking a servant at his place of prayer but did not find him. Then they ascended to their Lord and said: "O Lord, we used to record for Your believing servant in his day and night such and such deeds, but we found that You had detained him in Your snare, so we recorded nothing for him." He, mighty and glorious, said: "Record for My servant his deeds in his day and night, and do not reduce anything from him. Upon Me is the reward for what I detained him from, and for him is the reward of what he used to do."

     ✧ Let not Bilal's call to prayer deceive you about your pre-dawn meal, for he only calls so that your standing one may return and your sleeping one may awaken. And not this dawn that is like this—meaning the bright spread one—but the dawn that is like this—meaning the elongated one.

     " أُرِيتُ الْأُمَمَ بِالْمَوْسِمِ، فَرَأَيْتُ أُمَّتِي قَدْ مَلَئُوا السَّهْلَ وَالْجَبَلَ، فَأَعْجَبَنِي كَثْرَتُهُمْ وَهَيْئَتُهُمْ، فَقِيلَ لِي: أَرَضِيتَ ؟ قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: وَمَعَ هَؤُلَاءِ سَبْعُونَ أَلْفًا يَدْخُلُونَ الْجَنَّةَ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ، لَا يَكْتَوُونَ، وَلَا يَتَطَيَّرُونَ، وَلَا يَسْتَرْقُونَ، وَعَلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ "، فَقَامَ عُكَّاشَةُ بْنُ مِحْصَنٍ الْأَسَدِيُّ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، ادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يَجْعَلَنِي مِنْهُمْ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ مِنْهُمْ "، فَقَامَ آخَرُ فَقَالَ: ادْعُ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَنْ يَجْعَلَنِي مِنْهُمْ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " سَبَقَكَ بِهَا عُكَّاشَةُ

     ✧ "The nations were shown to me at the gathering place, and I saw my community filling the plain and the mountain, and their large number and their appearance pleased me. It was said to me: Are you satisfied? I said: Yes. He said: And with these are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning, who do not cauterize, do not practice augury, do not seek ruqya, and upon their Lord they rely." 'Ukkasha b. Mihsan al-Asadi stood up and said: O Messenger of God, pray to God to make me one of them. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "O God, make him one of them." Another stood up and said: Pray to God, Mighty and Majestic, to make me one of them. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "'Ukkasha has preceded you to it."

     كُنْتُ غُلَامًا يَافِعًا أَرْعَى غَنَمًا لِعُقْبَةَ بْنِ أَبِي مُعَيْطٍ بِمَكَّةَ، فَأَتَى عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ، وَقَدْ فَرَّا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ، فَقَالَ: " يَا غُلَامُ، عِنْدَكَ لَبَنٌ تَسْقِينَا ؟ " قُلْتُ: إِنِّي مُؤْتَمَنٌ، وَلَسْتُ بِسَاقِيكُمَا، قَالَا: " فَهَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ جَذَعَةٍ لَمْ يَنْزُ عَلَيْهَا الْفَحْلُ بَعْدُ ؟ " قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، فَأَتَيْتُهُمَا بِهَا، فَاعْتَقَلَهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، وَأَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الضَّرْعَ، فَدَعَا، فَحَفَلَ الضَّرْعُ، وَأَتَاهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ بِصَخْرَةٍ مُنْقَعِرَةٍ، فَحَلَبَ فِيهَا، ثُمَّ شَرِبَ هُوَ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ، ثُمَّ سَقَيَانِي، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِلضَّرْعِ: " اقْلِصْ "، فَقَلَصَ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ بَعْدُ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ: عَلِّمْنِي مِنْ هَذَا الْقَوْلِ الطَّيِّبِ - يَعْنِي الْقُرْآنَ - فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّكَ غُلَامٌ مُعَلَّمٌ، فَأَخَذْتُ مِنْ فِيهِ سَبْعِينَ سُورَةً، مَا يُنَازِعُنِي فِيهَا أَحَدٌ

     ✧ I was a young boy pasturing sheep for 'Uqba b. Abi Mu'ayt in Makkah. The Messenger of God ﷺ and Abu Bakr came upon me, having fled from the idolaters. He said: "O boy, do you have milk to give us to drink?" I said: I am entrusted, and I will not give you to drink. They said: "Do you have a young she-camel that no stallion has mounted yet?" I said: Yes. I brought it to them, Abu Bakr hobbled it, and the Messenger of God ﷺ took the udder and supplicated, and the udder filled with milk. Abu Bakr brought him a hollowed rock, and he milked into it. Then he and Abu Bakr drank, then they gave me to drink. Then he said to the udder: "Shrink," and it shrank. Later I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: Teach me some of this good speech — meaning the Qur'an. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "You are a taught boy." I took from his mouth seventy surahs, in which no one disputes with me.

     ✧ On the day of Badr we were two on a camel and three on a camel. The Prophet's ﷺ riding companions were 'Ali and Abu Lubaba al-Ansari. When their turn to walk came, they said: O Messenger of God, ride, we will walk instead of you. He said: "You are not stronger at walking than I, nor do I desire less reward than you."

     ✧ He used to cut a siwak from an arak tree for the Prophet ﷺ, and the wind would bend him over, and there was thinness in his shins, so the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ laughed. He said: "What makes you laugh?" They said: At the thinness of his shins. The Prophet ﷺ said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, he is heavier in the balance than Uhud."

     ✧ "Some people sat in the mosque: two Qurayshis and a Thaqafi — or two Thaqafis and a Qurayshi. One of them said: Do you think God hears what we say? One of them said: If we raise our voices He hears, and if we do not raise them He does not hear. The other said: If He hears any of it, He hears all of it. I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and mentioned that to him, and God, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: 'And you were not concealing yourselves lest your hearing testify against you...' the verse."

     " إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَمْ يُنْزِلْ دَاءً إِلَّا أَنْزَلَ لَهُ شِفَاءً إِلَّا الْهَرَمَ، فَعَلَيْكُمْ بِأَلْبَانِ الْبَقَرِ، فَإِنَّهَا تَرُمُّ مِنْ كُلِّ الشَّجَرِ

     ✧ Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has not sent down any disease but that He has sent down for it a cure, except old age. So take to the milk of cows, for they graze on every kind of tree.

     ✧ I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was suffering from a fever, so I touched him and said: O Messenger of Allah, you are suffering from a severe fever. He said: Yes, I suffer a fever as severe as two men among you. I said: That is because you have a double reward? He said: Yes, and by the One in whose hand is my soul, no Muslim is afflicted with any harm—illness or anything else—except that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sheds his sins from him as a tree sheds its leaves.

     ✧ I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Which deed is best? He said: Prayer at its proper time. I said: Then which—or he said: Then what? Abu Dawud was uncertain—he said: Then kindness to parents. I said: Then what—or then which?—he said: Striving in the path of Allah. He told me these, and if I had asked for more, he would have added.

     ✧ A man came to Abu Musa and asked him about a man who left behind his daughter, his son's daughter, and his sister. He said: To the daughter half, and to the sister half. Go to 'Abdullah, and he will agree with me. So the man came to 'Abdullah and mentioned that to him, and he said: Then I would have gone astray and would not be of the rightly guided. I will judge in this case with the judgment of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: to the daughter half, to the son's daughter one-sixth, and to the sister the remainder. He then went to Abu Musa and informed him, and he said: Do not ask us about anything as long as this scholar is among you.

     كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَرْجِعَهُ مِنَ الْحُدَيْبِيَةِ، فَعَرَّسْنَا فَقَالَ: " مَنْ يَحْرُسُنَا لِصَلَاتِنَا ؟ " - وَقَالَ شُعْبَةُ: " مَنْ يَكْلَؤُنَا ؟ " - قَالَ بِلَالٌ: أَنَا، قَالَ الْمَسْعُودِيُّ فِي حَدِيثِهِ: " إِنَّكَ تَنَامُ "، قَالَ: " مَنْ يَحْرُسُنَا لِصَلَاتِنَا ؟ " فَقَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ: قُلْتُ: أَنَا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " إِنَّكَ تَنَامُ "، قَالَ: فَحَرَسْتُهُمْ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ فِي وَجْهِ الصُّبْحِ أَدْرَكَنِي مَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَنِمْتُ، فَمَا اسْتَيْقَظْنَا إِلَّا بِالشَّمْسِ، فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَنَعَ مَا كَانَ يَصْنَعُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَوْ أَرَادَ أَنْ لَا تَنَامُوا عَنْهَا لَمْ تَنَامُوا، وَلَكِنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَكُونَ لِمَنْ بَعْدَكُمْ، فَهَكَذَا لِمَنْ نَامَ مِنْكُمْ أَوْ نَسِيَ "، قَالَ شُعْبَةُ فِي حَدِيثِهِ: " هَكَذَا فَافْعَلُوا، مَنْ نَامَ مِنْكُمْ أَوْ نَسِيَ "، وَقَالَ الْمَسْعُودِيُّ فِي حَدِيثِهِ - وَلَيْسَ فِي حَدِيثِ شُعْبَةَ -: إِنَّ رَاحِلَةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ضَلَّتْ فَطَلَبْنَاهَا، فَوَجَدْنَاهَا عِنْدَ شَجَرَةٍ قَدْ تَعَلَّقَ خِطَامُهَا بِالشَّجَرَةِ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، مَا كَانَ لِتَحُلَّهَا الْأَيْدِي

     ✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on his return from al-Hudaybiyah, and we stopped to rest at night. He said, "Who will guard us for our prayer?" – and Shu'bah said, "Who will keep watch over us?" – Bilal said, "I will." Al-Mas'udi said in his narration: "You will fall asleep." He said, "Who will guard us for our prayer?" Ibn Mas'ud said: I said, "I will." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You will fall asleep." He said: So I kept watch over them until, when dawn was approaching, what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said overtook me, and I slept. We did not wake except with the sun. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up and did what he used to do, then said, "If Allah, Mighty and Majestic, had willed that you not sleep through it, you would not have slept. But He willed that it should be for those after you, so this is for whoever of you sleeps or forgets." Shu'bah said in his narration: "Thus do, whoever of you sleeps or forgets." And al-Mas'udi said in his narration – and it is not in Shu'bah's narration: The mount of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went astray, so we searched for it, and found it by a tree, its nose-rein caught on the tree. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, no hands could have untied it."

     ✧ "O 'Abdullah, do you know which of the bonds of Islam is most reliable?" I said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "Allegiance for the sake of Allah, love for the sake of Allah, and hatred for the sake of Allah. O 'Abdullah, do you know which of the people is most knowledgeable?" I said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "The most knowledgeable of people is the one most knowledgeable of the truth when people differ, even if he is deficient in knowledge, and even if he crawls on his backside."

If their religion remains established for them, it will remain for seventy years." 'Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah, for what has passed or what remains?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "For what remains."

     ✧ Then God, Mighty and Majestic, permits intercession. The Holy Spirit, Gabriel, stands up, then Ibrahim, the Friend of God, stands up, then 'Isa or Musa—Abu al-Za'ra' said: I do not know which of them he said—then your Prophet ﷺ stands up fourth and intercedes. He does not intercede for anyone after him in more than what he intercedes. That is the Praiseworthy Station of which God, Mighty and Majestic, said: 'It may be that your Lord will raise you to a Praiseworthy Station.'

     كُنَّا جُلُوسًا عِنْدَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، إِذْ هَبَّتْ رِيحٌ حَمْرَاءُ، فَأَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ مَا لَهُ هِجِّيرَى إِلَّا قَوْلَهُ: يَا عَبْدَ اللهِ جَاءَتِ السَّاعَةُ، يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ جَاءَتِ السَّاعَةُ، وَاسْتَوَى جَالِسًا، يُعْرَفُ الْغَضَبُ فِي وَجْهِهِ، وَكَانَ مُتَّكِئًا عَلَى سَرِيرٍ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ السَّاعَةَ لَا تَقُومُ حَتَّى لَا يُقْسَمَ مِيرَاثٌ وَلَا يُفْرَحَ بِغَنِيمَةٍ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: عَدُوٌّ لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ يَجْمَعُ لَهُمْ، وَأَوْمَأَ بِيَدِهِ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي قَتَادَةَ: الشَّامُ يَعْنِي ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: وَيَكُونُ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ الْقِتَالِ رِدَّةٌ شَدِيدَةٌ، قَالَ: وَيَسْتَمِدُّ الْمُسْلِمُونَ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضًا، فَيَلْتَقُونَ وَيَقْتَتِلُونَ قِتَالًا شَدِيدًا، قَالَ: ثُمَّ يُشْرَطُ شُرْطَةٌ لِلْمَوْتِ لَا تَرْجِعُ إِلَّا غَالِبَةً، فَيَلْتَقُونَ فَيَقْتَتِلُونَ حَتَّى يَحْجِزَ بَيْنَهُمُ اللَّيْلُ، وَيَفِيءُ هَؤُلَاءِ وَهَؤُلَاءِ، وَكُلٌّ غَيْرُ غَالِبٍ، وَتَفْنَى الشُّرْطَةُ، فَإِذَا كَانَ الْيَوْمُ الثَّانِي يُشْرَطُ شُرْطَةٌ لِلْمَوْتِ، فَيَلْتَقُونَ فَيَقْتَتِلُونَ حَتَّى يَحْجِزَ بَيْنَهُمُ اللَّيْلُ، فَيَفِيءُ هَؤُلَاءِ وَهَؤُلَاءِ، وَكُلٌّ غَيْرُ غَالِبٍ، وَتَفْنَى الشُّرْطَةُ، فَإِذَا كَانَ الْيَوْمُ الثَّالِثُ يُشْرَطُ شُرْطَةٌ لِلْمَوْتِ، فَيَلْتَقُونَ فَيَقْتَتِلُونَ حَتَّى يَحْجِزَ بَيْنَهُمُ اللَّيْلُ، فَيَفِيءُ هَؤُلَاءِ وَهَؤُلَاءِ وَكُلٌّ غَيْرُ غَالِبٍ، وَتَفْنَى الشُّرْطَةُ، فَإِذَا كَانَ الْيَوْمُ الرَّابِعُ نَهَدَ إِلَيْهِمْ بَقِيَّةُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، فَيَفْتَحُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَيْهِمْ، فَيَنْظُرُ بَنُو الْأَبِ، كَانُوا يَتَعَادُّونَ عَلَى مِائَةٍ، لَمْ يَبْقَ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا رَجُلٌ، فَأَيُّ مِيرَاثٍ يُقْسَمَ أَوْ بِأَيِّ غَنِيمَةٍ يُفْرَحُ ؟ قَالَ: فَبَيْنَمَا هُمْ كَذَلِكَ إِذْ سَمِعُوا أَمْرًا أَكْبَرَ مِنْهُ، الدَّجَّالَ قَدْ خَلَفَهُمْ عَلَى ذَرَارِيِّهِمْ وَأَهَالِيهِمْ، قَالَ: وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: فَيَبْعَثُ أَمِيرُهُمْ طَلِيعَةً، عَشَرَةَ فَوَارِسَ، إِنِّي لَأَعْلَمُ أَسْمَاءَهُمْ وَأَسْمَاءَ آبَائِهِمْ وَأَلْوَانَ خُيُولِهِمْ، هُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَيْرُ فَوَارِسَ فِي الْأَرْضِ، أَوْ مِنْ خَيْرِ فَوَارِسَ فِي الْأَرْضِ

     ✧ We were sitting with 'Abdullah b. Mas'ud when a red wind blew. A man came whose only refrain was saying: 'O 'Abdullah, the Hour has come! O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, the Hour has come!' He sat up straight, anger showing on his face, for he had been reclining on a couch of his. He said: The Hour will not come until no inheritance is divided and no booty is rejoiced over. Then he said: An enemy of the Muslims will gather against them, and he gestured with his hand. I said to Abu Qatadah: You mean Syria? He said: Yes. He said: At that fighting there will be a severe apostasy. He said: The Muslims will seek reinforcements from one another. They will meet and fight a severe battle. He said: Then a detachment will be singled out for death, which will not return except victorious. They will meet and fight until night separates them. These and those will withdraw, each not victorious, and the detachment will perish. On the second day, a detachment will be singled out for death. They will meet and fight until night separates them. These and those will withdraw, each not victorious, and the detachment will perish. On the third day, a detachment will be singled out for death. They will meet and fight until night separates them. These and those will withdraw, each not victorious, and the detachment will perish. On the fourth day, the rest of the Muslims will advance against them, and God, Mighty and Majestic, will grant them victory. A man will look at a family of a father: they used to number a hundred, and not one of them remains except one man. So what inheritance would be divided or what booty would be rejoiced over? He said: While they are like that, they hear something greater than that: the Dajjal has left them behind among their children and families. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Their commander will send a scouting party of ten horsemen. I indeed know their names, their fathers' names, and the colors of their horses. On that day they will be the best horsemen on earth, or among the best horsemen on earth.

     إِنَّ مِنْ أَشْرَاطِ السَّاعَةِ أَنْ تُتَّخَذَ الْمَسَاجِدُ طُرُقًا، وَأَنْ يُسَلِّمَ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى الرَّجُلِ بِالْمَعْرِفَةِ، وَأَنْ يَتَّجِرَ الرَّجُلُ وَامْرَأَتُهُ جَمِيعًا، وَأَنْ تَغْلُوَ مُهُورُ النِّسَاءِ، وَالْخَيْلُ، ثُمَّ تَرْخُصَ، فَلَا تَغْلُوَ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ

     ✧ Among the signs of the Hour are that mosques are taken as thoroughfares, that a man greets another man only because he knows him, that a man and his wife trade together, and that the dowers of women and horses become expensive, then become cheap, and will not become expensive until the Day of Resurrection.

     ✧ We came to Ibn Mas'ud and heard him saying: 'God and His Messenger have spoken the truth. God and His Messenger have spoken the truth.' We said: 'O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, what is this?' He said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ said: The Night of Decree is in the middle of the seven; the sun rises with no rays.' So I watched it, and it was as the Messenger of God ﷺ said.

     ✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ disliked ten things: yellow dye—meaning khaluq—, wearing a gold ring, incantations except with the mu'awwidhat, withdrawing semen from its place, displaying adornment to other than its proper place, tying amulets, dragging the lower garment, spoiling a child without making it forbidden, changing gray hair, and playing with dice.

     ✧ I entered with 'Abdullah b. Mas'ud upon Khabbab, who had cauterized himself. 'Abdullah said: 'Do you not know that we have been forbidden from this, and it is disliked for us?' Khabbab said: 'The affliction became severe, and the doctors said: You have no cure except that.' 'Abdullah said: 'I did not fear you would do this.'

     بَايَعَ عَبْدُ اللهِ الْأَشْعَثَ بْنَ قَيْسٍ بِرَقِيقٍ مِنْ رَقِيقِ الْإِمَارَةِ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ يَتَقَاضَاهُ، فَقَالَ الْأَشْعَثُ: بِعْتَنِي بِعَشَرَةِ آلَافٍ، وَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: بِعْتُكَ بِعِشْرِينَ أَلْفًا، قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: اخْتَرْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكَ رَجُلًا، فَقَالَ الْأَشْعَثُ: أَمَا وَاللهِ لَأَخْتَارَنَّ، أَنْتَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ نَفْسِكَ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: أَمَا وَاللهِ لَأَقْضِيَنَّ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكَ بِقَضَاءٍ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ: إِذَا اخْتَلَفَ الْبَيِّعَانِ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْنَهُمَا بَيِّنَةٌ، فَهُوَ بِمَا يَقُولُ رَبُّ السِّلْعَةِ أَوْ يَتَتَارَكَانِ

     ✧ Abdullah sold al-Ash'ath b. Qays slaves from the slaves of the emirate. He sent to him demanding payment. Al-Ash'ath said, 'You sold me for ten thousand.' Abdullah said, 'I sold you for twenty thousand.' Abdullah said, 'Choose a man between me and you.' Al-Ash'ath said, 'By God, I will choose, and you are between me and myself.' Abdullah said, 'By God, I will judge between me and you with a judgment I heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ: When the two parties to a sale differ and there is no evidence between them, it is according to what the owner of the merchandise says, or they may mutually rescind.'

     " إِيَّاكُمْ وَمُحَقَّرَاتِ الْأَعْمَالِ، إِنَّهُنَّ لَيَجْتَمِعْنَ عَلَى الرَّجُلِ حَتَّى يُهْلِكْنَهُ "، فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ " ضَرَبَ لَهُنَّ مَثَلًا، كَمَثَلِ قَوْمٍ نَزَلُوا بِأَرْضٍ فَلَاةٍ، فَحَضَرَ صَنِيعُ الْقَوْمِ، فَجَعَلَ الرَّجُلُ يَجِيءُ بِالْعُودِ، وَالرَّجُلُ يَجِيءُ بِالْعُوَيْدِ، حَتَّى جَمَعُوا مِنْ ذَلِكَ سَوَادًا، ثُمَّ أَجَّجُوا نَارًا، فَأَنْضَجَتْ مَا قُذِفَ فِيهَا

     ✧ Beware of the insignificant sins, for they gather upon a man until they destroy him. The Messenger of God ﷺ struck a parable for them, like the parable of a people who camped in a desert land, and the people's food was prepared. One man came with a stick, and another came with a small stick, until they gathered from that a black mass. Then they kindled a fire, and it cooked what was thrown into it.

     ✧ The one who consumes riba, the one who gives it, its two witnesses, its scribe, the woman who tattoos and the woman who asks to be tattooed for beauty, the one who makes lawful and the one for whom it is made lawful, the one who withholds zakat, and the one who reverts to being a Bedouin after his emigration—all are cursed on the tongue of Muhammad on the Day of Resurrection.

     ✧ I am a man who will be taken. So learn the Quran and teach it to people, learn the shares of inheritance and teach them to people, learn knowledge and teach it to people. For I will be taken, and knowledge will decrease and tribulations will appear until two people differ over an obligatory share and find no one to judge between them.

     كُنَّا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ حَتَّى أَكْرَيْنَا الْحَدِيثَ، ثُمَّ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى أَهَالِينَا، فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْنَا غَدَوْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: عُرِضَ عَلَيَّ الْأَنْبِيَاءُ بِأُمَمِهَا وَأَتْبَاعُهَا مِنْ أُمَمِهَا، فَجَعَلَ يَمُرُّ النَّبِيُّ مَعَهُ الثَّلَاثَةُ مِنْ أُمَّتِهِ، وَالنَّبِيُّ مَعَهُ الْعِصَابَةُ مِنْ أُمَّتِهِ، وَالنَّبِيُّ يَمُرُّ مَعَهُ النَّفَرُ مِنْ أُمَّتِهِ، وَالنَّبِيُّ يَمُرُّ مَعَهُ الرَّجُلُ مِنْ أُمَّتِهِ، وَالنَّبِيُّ مَا مَعَهُ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِهِ، حَتَّى مَرَّ عَلَيَّ مُوسَى بْنُ عِمْرَانَ فِي كَبْكَبَةٍ مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ، فَلَمَّا رَأَيْتُهُمْ أَعْجَبُونِي، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَبِّ مَنْ هَذَا ؟ قَالَ: هَذَا أَخُوكَ مُوسَى بْنُ عِمْرَانَ وَمَنْ تَبِعَهُ مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ، قُلْتُ: يَا رَبِّ، فَأَيْنَ أُمَّتِي ؟ قَالَ: انْظُرْ عَنْ يَمِينِكَ، فَنَظَرْتُ فَإِذَا الظِّرَابُ - ظِرَابُ مَكَّةَ - قَدْ سُدَّتْ بِوُجُوهِ الرِّجَالِ، قُلْتُ: يَا رَبِّ، مَنْ هَؤُلَاءِ ؟ قِيلَ: هَؤُلَاءِ أُمَّتُكَ، قِيلَ: أَرَضِيتَ ؟ قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، قَدْ رَضِيتُ، قِيلَ: انْظُرْ عَنْ يَسَارِكَ، فَنَظَرْتُ، فَإِذَا الْأُفُقُ قَدْ سُدَّ بِوُجُوهِ الرِّجَالِ، قُلْتُ: يَا رَبِّ، مَنْ هَؤُلَاءِ ؟ قِيلَ: هَؤُلَاءِ أُمَّتُكَ، قِيلَ: رَضِيتَ ؟ قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ رَبِّ رَضِيتُ، قِيلَ: فَإِنَّ مَعَ هَؤُلَاءِ سَبْعِينَ أَلْفًا يَدْخُلُونَ الْجَنَّةَ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ، فَأَنْشَأَ عُكَّاشَةُ بْنُ مِحْصَنٍ أَخُو بَنِي أَسَدٍ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، ادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يَجْعَلَنِي مِنْهُمْ، فَقَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ مِنْهُمْ، فَأَنْشَأَ رَجُلٌ آخَرُ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، ادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يَجْعَلَنِي مِنْهُمْ، قَالَ: سَبَقَكَ بِهَا عُكَّاشَةُ بْنُ مِحْصَنٍ، قَالَ: وَذُكِرَ لَنَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ: فِدَاكُمْ أَبِي وَأُمِّي، إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ أَنْ تَكُونُوا مِنَ السَّبْعِينَ فَكُونُوا، فَإِنْ عَجَزْتُمْ وَقَصَّرْتُمْ فَكُونُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الظِّرَابِ، فَإِنْ عَجَزْتُمْ وَقَصَّرْتُمْ فَكُونُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْأُفُقِ، فَإِنِّي قَدْ رَأَيْتُ ثَمَّ نَاسًا يَتَهَاوَشُونَ كَثِيرًا، قَالَ: وَذُكِرَ لَنَا أَنَّ رِجَالًا مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ - أَوْ نَاسًا مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ - تَرَاجَعُوا بَيْنَهُمْ، فَقَالُوا: مَا تَرَوْنَ هَؤُلَاءِ السَّبْعِينَ أَلْفًا ؟ حَتَّى صَيَّرُوا مِنْ أُمُورِهِمْ أَنْ قَالُوا: نَاسٌ وُلِدُوا فِي الْإِسْلَامِ، فَلَمْ يَزَالُوا يَعْمَلُونَ بِهِ حَتَّى مَاتُوا عَلَيْهِ، فَبَلَغَ حَدِيثُهُمْ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: لَيْسَ كَذَاكُمْ، وَلَكِنَّهُمُ الَّذِينَ لَا يَكْتَوُونَ، وَلَا يَسْتَرْقُونَ، وَلَا يَتَطَيَّرُونَ، وَعَلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ، وَذُكِرَ لَنَا أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ: إِنِّي لَأَرْجُو أَنْ يَكُونَ مَنْ يَتْبَعُنِي مِنْ أُمَّتِي رُبُعَ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ، فَكَبَّرْنَا، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي لَأَرْجُو أَنْ يَكُونُوا الشَّطْرَ " قَالَ: فَكَبَّرُوا، قَالَ: وَتَلَا هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الأَوَّلِينَ وَثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الآخِرِينَ

     ✧ We were with the Messenger of God ﷺ one night until we prolonged the conversation, then we returned to our families. When morning came, we went to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said: The prophets were presented to me with their nations and their followers from their nations. A prophet passed with three from his nation, a prophet with a band from his nation, a prophet with a small group from his nation, a prophet with one man from his nation, and a prophet with no one from his nation. Then Moses b. ʿImran passed by me in a throng of the Children of Israel. When I saw them, they amazed me. I said, 'O Lord, who is this?' He said, 'This is your brother Moses b. ʿImran and those who followed him from the Children of Israel.' I said, 'O Lord, where is my nation?' He said, 'Look to your right.' I looked, and there were the hillocks—the hillocks of Makkah—filled with the faces of men. I said, 'O Lord, who are these?' It was said, 'These are your nation.' It was said, 'Are you pleased?' I said, 'Yes, I am pleased.' It was said, 'Look to your left.' I looked, and the horizon was filled with the faces of men. I said, 'O Lord, who are these?' It was said, 'These are your nation.' It was said, 'Are you pleased?' I said, 'Yes, O Lord, I am pleased.' It was said, 'With these are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning.' Then ʿUkkasha b. Mihsan, brother of Banu Asad, rose and said, 'O Messenger of God, pray to God to make me one of them.' He said, 'O God, make him one of them.' Then another man rose and said, 'O Messenger of God, pray to God to make me one of them.' He said, 'ʿUkkasha b. Mihsan has preceded you to it.' He said: And it was mentioned to us that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'May my father and mother be your ransom. If you can be among the seventy, then be. If you are unable and fall short, then be among the people of the hillocks. If you are unable and fall short, then be among the people of the horizon, for I saw there many people mingling.' He said: And it was mentioned to us that men among the believers—or people among the believers—debated among themselves, saying, 'What do you think these seventy thousand are?' They came to say about their affair: 'People born in Islam who continued to act upon it until they died upon it.' Their talk reached the Prophet of God ﷺ, and he said: 'It is not as you say, but they are those who do not cauterize, do not seek ruqya, do not take omens, and upon their Lord they rely.' And it was mentioned to us that the Prophet of God ﷺ said: 'I hope that those who follow me from my nation will be a quarter of the people of Paradise.' We said takbir. He said: 'I hope they will be half.' He said: They said takbir, and he recited this verse: 'A multitude of the former and a multitude of the latter.'

     " إِنِّي غَالٌّ مُصْحَفِي، فَمَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ أَنْ يَغُلَّ مُصْحَفًا فَلْيَفْعَلْ، فَإِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَالَ وَمَنْ يَغْلُلْ يَأْتِ بِمَا غَلَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَلَقَدْ أَخَذْتُ مِنْ فِي رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ سَبْعِينَ سُورَةً، وَإِنَّ زَيْدَ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ لَصَبِيٌّ مِنَ الصِّبْيَانِ، فَأَنَا أَدَعُ مَا أَخَذْتُ مِنْ فِي رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ

     ✧ I have wrongfully taken my mushaf. Whoever can wrongfully take a mushaf, let him do so, for God, mighty and majestic, said: 'And whoever defrauds will bring what he defrauded on the Day of Resurrection.' I took from the mouth of the Messenger of God ﷺ seventy surahs, while Zayd b. Thabit was a boy among boys. So shall I abandon what I took from the mouth of the Messenger of God ﷺ?
