حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ مَيْسَرَةَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ النَّزَّالَ بْنَ سَبْرَةَ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ:
قَرَأْتُ آيَةً، وَقَرَأَ رَجُلٌ خِلَافَهَا، فَأَتَيْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ لَهُ، فَقَالَ شُعْبَةُ: فَأَكْبَرُ عِلْمِي أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَهُمَا: لَا تَخْتَلِفَا، فَإِنَّ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمُ اخْتَلَفُوا فَهَلَكُوا

✧ I recited a verse, and a man recited it differently. So we came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and mentioned that to him. Shu'bah said: The best of my knowledge is that the Messenger of God ﷺ said to them both: Do not differ, for those before you differed and were destroyed.
