He used to say: When the people form rows for prayer and are arrayed for battle, the gates of heaven are opened, as are the gates of Paradise and the gates of Hell, and the wide-eyed houris are adorned and look out. ✧ I participated in the Battle of Tabuk with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, alongside Abu Bakr As-Siddiq. This battle was one of my greatest achievements, and I hired a helper to fight alongside me. During the battle, my helper got into a fight with another man and he bit his hand, causing him to lose his two fingers. The injured man then complained to the Prophet ﷺ about what happened. The Prophet ﷺ dismissed the complaint and said, "Would you want your hand to make him suffer by biting it like a stallion bites?"

✧ I went on the expedition of Tabuk with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a refractory young camel, and I had a hired hand with me. My hired hand fought a man, and the man bit him. He pulled his hand from the man's mouth, and his front tooth fell out. He was brought to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said to him: 'Would he leave his hand in your mouth for you to gnaw it as a stallion gnaws?' So he declared the tooth to be of no consequence.

✧ From his father and his paternal uncle Salamah b. Umayyah: The two of them went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ on the expedition of Tabuk, and a companion of ours was with us. A man fought with him and bit him, so our companion pulled his hand out of his mouth, and a part of his mouth fell out. He went to the Messenger of God ﷺ and asked for compensation. A child was born to him, and his mother carried him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, this child has been born while his father is with the cavalry, so name him.” The Prophet ﷺ took him, passed his hand over him, and said, “O Allah, increase their men, shorten their days, do not make them needy, and do not let their young ones experience want.” Then he said, “Name him Musri‘ (swift), for he has hastened into Islam.”

He was saying, “The upper hand is better than the lower hand: your mother and your father, your sister and your brother, then the next closest and the next closest.” Then he said, “Who is this with you, O Abū Rimtha?” I said, “My son.” He said, “Indeed, he will not be held liable for you, nor will you be held liable for him.” Then I looked and saw on the cartilage of his shoulder something like a camel’s dropping or a pigeon’s egg.
