✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Mu'adh b. Jabal when he sent him to Yemen: “You will come to a people of the Book. When you reach them, call them to testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. If they obey you in that, then inform them that Allah has made obligatory upon them five prayers in a day and a night. If they obey you in that, then inform them that Allah has made obligatory upon them a charity taken from their rich and returned to their poor. If they obey you in that, then beware of the supplication of the wronged.”

✧ I said: “O Prophet of Allah, I did not come to you until I had sworn—more times than the number of his fingers—that I would not come to you nor to your religion. I was a man who understood nothing except what Allah and His Messenger taught me. I ask you by the face of Allah: With what has your Lord sent you to us?” He said: “With Islam.” I said: “What are the signs of Islam?” He said: “To say, ‘I have submitted my face to Allah and disavowed [idolatry],’ to establish prayer, and to give zakah.” (2228) And from Muhammad b. Isma'il b. Ibrahim from Yahya b. Abi Bukayr from Shibl b. 'Abbad from Abu Qaza'ah Suwayd b. Hujayr from Hakim b. Mu'awiyah with the same.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Performing ablution thoroughly is half of faith; ‘Praise be to Allah’ fills the scale; glorification and magnification fill the heavens and the earth; prayer is light; zakah is proof; patience is radiance; and the Qur'an is an argument for you or against you.”

✧ That he heard from Abu Hurayrah and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri saying: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us one day and said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul" three times, then he bowed his head, and each man among us bowed his head weeping, not knowing why he had sworn. Then he raised his head with glad tidings on his face, and that was dearer to us than red camels. Then he said: "There is no servant who performs the five prayers, fasts Ramadan, pays Zakat, and avoids the seven major sins, except that the gates of Paradise are opened for him, and it is said to him: Enter in peace."

✧ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Whoever spends a pair of anything in the cause of Allah will be called from the gates of Paradise: O servant of Allah, this is good. Paradise has gates, and whoever is among the people of prayer will be called from the gate of prayer, whoever is among the people of jihad will be called from the gate of jihad, whoever is among the people of charity will be called from the gate of charity, and whoever is among the people of fasting will be called from the gate of al-Rayyan." Abu Bakr said: "Is there any necessity upon the one who is called from those gates? Will anyone be called from all of them, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Yes, and I hope that you will be among them," meaning Abu Bakr.

✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was sitting in the shade of the Ka'bah. When he saw me coming, he said: "They are the greatest losers, by the Lord of the Ka'bah." I said: "What is wrong with me? Perhaps something has been revealed concerning me." I said: "Who are they, may my father and mother be your ransom?" He said: "Those with the most wealth, except for one who does like this, and this, and this," and he gestured in front of him, to his right, and to his left. Then he said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, no man dies leaving camels or cattle on which he did not pay their Zakat, except that they will come on the Day of Resurrection as large and fat as they ever were, trampling him with their hooves and goring him with their horns. Whenever the last of them passes, the first of them will be returned to him, until judgment is passed among the people."

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There is no man who has wealth and does not pay its due, except that it will be made into a collar around his neck as a bald-headed poisonous snake, and it will go before him while he follows it." Then he recited its confirmation from the Book of Allah: {And let not those who withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty think that it is better for them; rather, it is worse for them. They will be collared} [Al 'Imran 180] to the end of the verse.

Whoever says: There is no god but Allah has protected his wealth and his life from me, except for its due, and his reckoning is with Allah'?" By Allah, if they withhold from me a rope they used to give to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I will fight them for withholding it." 'Umar said: "By Allah, it was only when I saw that Allah had opened Abu Bakr's chest to fighting that I knew it was the truth."

These are the types of charity (zakah) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made obligatory upon the Muslims and which Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, enjoined upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Whoever among the Muslims is asked to pay it in the proper manner, let him give it; whoever is asked for more than that, let him not give it. For less than twenty-five camels, for each five, one sheep (should be given). If the number reaches twenty-five, then one she-camel in its second year (should be given), up to thirty-five. If there is no she-camel in its second year, then a he-camel in its third year (may be given). If the number reaches thirty-six, then a she-camel in its third year (should be given), up to forty-five. If the number reaches forty-six, then a she-camel in its fourth year that has been bred to a stallion camel should be given, up to sixty, If the number reaches sixty-one, then a she-camel in its fifth year (should be given), up to seventy five. If the number reaches seventy-six, then two she-camels in their second year (should be given), up to ninety. If the number reaches ninety-one, then two she camels in their fourth year that have been bred to a stallion camel should be given, up to one hundred and twenty. If the number is more than one hundred and twenty, then for every forty camels, a she-camel limits third year should be given and for every fifty a she-camel in its fourth year. If the ages of the camels for zakah differ, if what is due is a she-camel in its fifth year but he does not own such a camel, but he has a she-camel in its fourth year, then that will be accepted from him and he should add to it two sheep, if available, or twenty dirhams. If what is due from him is a she-camel in its fourth year and he only has a she camel in its fifth year, it should be accepted from him and the zakat collector should give him back twenty dirhams or two sheep. If what is due from him is a shecamel in its fourth year, but he does not have such a cameland he has a she-camel in its third year, then it should be accepted from him and he should add to it two sheep, is available, or twenty dirhams. If what is due from him is a she camel in its second year, but he only has a he-camel in its third year, then it should be accepted from him and nothing should be added to it. If he has only four camels, no zakah is due unless the owner wants to give it. With regard to zakah on sheep in the pasture, if there are forty sheep, then one sheep is due as zakah, up to one hundred and twenty sheep. of there is one more than that, then two sheep are due, up to two hundred. If there is one more than that then three sheep are due, up to three hundred. If there is one more than that, then for every hundred sheep, one sheep is due No toothless or defective sheep should be taken as zakah and neither should a ram, unless the one who is giving allows that. Separate flocks should not be put together and flocks should not be divided so as to avoid or reduce zakah. If there are two partners [and the zakah-collector comes and takes zakah), they should settle the matter between them on a fair basis. If a man's flock is grazing if it is one less than forty, then no zakah is due on it unless the owner wants to give it. On silver the zakah is one quarter of one tenth; if the wealth is only one hundred and ninety dirhams, then no zakah is due on it unless the owner wants to give it. (Using translation from Aḥmad 72)

Sheep will come to their owner in the best condition they ever were if he did not pay their due, trampling him with their cloven hooves and goring him with their horns." He said: "And it is their due that they be milked at the water. Truly, let none of you come on the Day of Resurrection with a camel on his neck, bellowing, and say: 'O Muhammad,' and I will say: 'I have no power over anything for you; I have conveyed.' Let none of you come on the Day of Resurrection with a sheep on his neck, bleating, and say: 'O Muhammad,' and I will say: 'I have no power over anything for you; I have conveyed.'" He said: "And the treasure of one of them will be on the Day of Resurrection a bald-headed poisonous snake from which its owner flees, but it pursues him: 'I am your treasure.' It will not cease until it makes him swallow his finger."

✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ early in the day when a group of people came, barefoot, unclothed, wearing swords, most of them from Mudar, indeed all of them from Mudar. The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed because of the poverty he saw in them. He entered, then came out and ordered Bilal to give the call to prayer. He gave the call, then the prayer was established and he prayed. Then he gave a sermon and said: "O people, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer." And: "Fear Allah, and let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow." "Let a man give charity from his dinar, from his dirhams, from his garment, from a sa' of his wheat, from a sa' of his dates," until he said, "even with half a date." A man from the Ansar came with a purse that his hand could hardly carry, indeed it could not. Then the people followed one another until I saw two heaps of food and clothing, and I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ shining as if it were gilded. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever establishes a good practice in Islam, he has its reward and the reward of those who act upon it, without their rewards being diminished in anything. Whoever establishes an evil practice in Islam, he bears its sin and the sin of those who act upon it, without their sins being diminished in anything."

Then a man with a thick beard, prominent cheekbones, sunken eyes, a protruding forehead, and a shaved head came and said: 'Fear Allah, O Muhammad.' He said: 'Who would obey Allah if I disobeyed Him? Does He trust me with the people of the earth, and you do not trust me?'
