✧ The Raisins in Zakat al-Fitr

أَخْبَرَنَا هَنَّادُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ عَنْ وَكِيعٍ عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ قَيْسٍ عَنْ عِيَاضِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ قَالَ

كُنَّا نُخْرِجُ صَدَقَةَ الْفِطْرِ إِذْ كَانَ فِينَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «صَاعًا مِنْ طَعَامٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ زبيبٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ أَقِطٍ» فَلَمْ نَزَلْ كَذَلِكَ حَتَّى قَدِمَ مُعَاوِيَةُ الشَّامَ فَكَانَ فِيمَا عَلَّمَ النَّاسَ بِهِ أَنْ قَالَ مَا أَرَى مُدَّيْنِ مِنْ سَمْرَاءِ الشَّامِ إِلَّا تَعْدِلُ صَاعًا مِنْ هَذَا قَالَ وَأَخَذَ النَّاسُ بِذَلِكَ

Translation

✧ We used to give ṣadaqat al-fiṭr when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was among us: one ṣāʿ of food, or one ṣāʿ of barley, or one ṣāʿ of dates, or one ṣāʿ of raisins, or one ṣāʿ of aqiṭ. We continued doing that until Muʿāwiyah came to the Levant, and among what he taught the people was that he said: I do not think that two mudds of Levantine wheat are anything but equal to one ṣāʿ of this. He said: And the people adopted that.
