✧ I incurred a debt on behalf of others, so I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to ask him about it. He said: 'Stay, O Qabisah, until the charity comes to us, and we will order it for you.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Qabisah, charity is not lawful except for one of three: a man who incurred a debt on behalf of others, so begging is lawful for him until he obtains a means of livelihood - or he said: a sufficiency of livelihood - and a man who is struck by poverty until three people of sound judgment from his people say: So-and-so has been struck by poverty, so begging is lawful for him until he obtains a means of livelihood - or he said: a sufficiency of livelihood - and a man who is struck by a calamity that destroyed his wealth, so begging is lawful for him until he obtains it, then he should stop. Whatever begging is beyond this, O Qabisah, is unlawful earnings, consumed by its owner as unlawful.'
