✧ She experienced istiḥāḍah, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set the duration of her menstruation at six or seven days.

✧ I said to ʿAṭāʾ: A menstruating woman sees purity, purifies herself, then sees blood after that. Is that menstruation? He said: No. If she sees purity, she should perform ghusl. If she sees blood after that, she is mustaḥāḍah, since that is during her period. He said: She should pray as long as she sees purity, then complete her normal periods. If it increases beyond that, it is the status of mustaḥāḍah, so she should pray.

✧ Regarding a woman whose menstruation is six days, then she menstruates for two days, then she becomes pure. He said: She performs ghusl and prays. If she sees menstrual blood after that, she refrains until she becomes pure, up to ten days. If it exceeds ten days, then she is a mustahadah; she makes up the days that exceeded her normal period.

✧ Regarding a woman whose menstruation is seven days, she remains menstruating for two days, then she sees purity and fasts for one day, then she sees blood the next day, then the blood continues with her until the completion of ten days, then she becomes pure. She must make up that day because she fasted it during the days of her menstruation. If it exceeds ten days, then she is a mustahadah. He also said regarding a woman whose normal period was six days and then it exceeded her normal period up to ten: If she becomes pure at the completion of ten, she does not have to make up the prayers. If it exceeds ten, she makes up the days that exceeded her normal period.

✧ I said to Ata: She sees during the days of her menstruation, along with her menstruation, yellowness preceding the blood, or fluid. Is that menstruation? He said: No, and she should not abstain from prayer until she sees the blood. I fear that it may be from Satan, to prevent her from prayer.

✧ If a woman sees after purification something that disturbs her, like the washing of meat, or the washing of fish, or like drops of blood before a nosebleed, then that is a kick from the kicks of Satan in the womb. ✧ I used to have prolonged, heavy istihadah bleeding. She said: I came to the Prophet ﷺ to ask his ruling and inform him. I found him in the house of my sister Zaynab. I said: O Messenger of God, I have a need to bring to you. He said: What is it? I said: I feel shy about it. He said: What is it, O you? She said: I said: I have prolonged, heavy istihadah bleeding that has prevented me from prayer and fasting. What do you think about it? He said: I prescribe for you cotton, for it removes the blood. She said: I said: It is more than that. He said: Then use a cloth as a waist-wrapper. I said: It is more than that. He said: Then use a garment. I said: It is more than that, it gushes out. He said: I will command you two things; whichever of them you do, God will suffice you from the other. If you are able to do both, you know best. Then he said: This is only a kick from the kicks of Satan. He said: Menstruate for six or seven days according to God's knowledge, then perform ghusl. When you see that you have become pure and are certain, pray and fast for twenty-four nights and their days, and that will suffice you. Do likewise every month, as women menstruate and become pure according to the timing of their menstruation and purity. If you are able to delay zuhr and hasten asr, perform ghusl for both together, then delay maghrib and hasten isha, perform ghusl for both and combine the two prayers, and perform ghusl with fajr, then pray. Do likewise and fast if you are able. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: This is the more preferable of the two matters to me.
