28. ✧ Righteousness and Maintaining Ties

    أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَهُوَ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: أَنْتَ الَّذِي تَزْعُمُ أَنَّكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: نَعَمْ، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللهِ ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: « إِيمَانٌ بِاللهِ »، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، ثُمَّ مَهْ ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: « ثُمَّ صِلَةُ الرَّحِمِ »، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَبْغَضُ إِلَى اللهِ تَعَالَى ؟ فَقَالَ ﷺ: « الْإِشْرَاكُ بِاللهِ »، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، ثُمَّ مَهْ ؟ قَالَ: « قَطِيعَةُ الرَّحِمِ » قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، ثُمَّ مَهْ ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: « أَمْرٌ بِالْمُنْكَرِ، وَالنَّهْيُ عَنِ الْمَعْرُوفِ »

    ✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was among a group of his companions. He said: I said: 'Are you the one who claims that you are the Messenger of God?' He ﷺ said: 'Yes.' I said: 'O Messenger of God, which deeds are most beloved to God?' He ﷺ said: 'Faith in God.' I said: 'O Messenger of God, then what?' He ﷺ said: 'Then maintaining family ties.' I said: 'O Messenger of God, which deeds are most hateful to God, exalted be He?' He ﷺ said: 'Associating partners with God.' I said: 'O Messenger of God, then what?' He said: 'Severing family ties.' He said: I said: 'O Messenger of God, then what?' He ﷺ said: 'Commanding evil and forbidding good.'

    كُنْتُ عِنْدَ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ فَأَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ، فَسَأَلَهُ: مَنْ أَنْتَ ؟ فَمَتَّ لَهُ بِرَحِمٍ بَعِيدَةٍ، فَأَلَانَ لَهُ الْقَوْلَ، وَقَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « اعْرِفُوا أَنْسَابَكُمْ تَصِلُوا أَرْحَامَكُمْ ; فَإِنَّهُ لَا قُرْبَ لِلرَّحِمِ إِذَا قُطِعَتْ وَإِنْ كَانَتْ قَرِيبَةً، وَلَا بُعْدَ لَهَا إِذَا وُصِلَتْ وَإِنْ كَانَتْ بَعِيدَةً

    ✧ I was with Ibn Abbas ؓ when a man came to him and asked him: 'Who are you?' He claimed a distant kinship to him, so he softened his speech to him and said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Know your lineages so that you may maintain your family ties; for there is no nearness for the womb when it is severed, even if it is close, and no distance for it when it is maintained, even if it is distant.'

    ✧ Angels do not descend upon a people among whom there is a severer of family ties.

    ✧ Mercy does not descend upon a people among whom there is a severer of family ties. A man from among his companions said: 'O Messenger of God, I have a maternal aunt whom I do not speak to.' He ﷺ said: 'Go to her and speak to her.'

    « الرَّحِمُ شِجْنَةٌ بِحُجْزَةِ الرَّحْمَنِ تُنَاشِدُهُ حَقَّهَا، فَيَقُولُ: أَلَا تَرْضَيْنَ أَنْ أَصِلَ مَنْ وَصَلَكِ وَأَقْطَعَ مَنْ قَطَعَكِ، وَمَنْ وَصَلَكِ فَقَدْ وَصَلَنِي، وَمَنْ قَطَعَكِ فَقَدْ قَطَعَنِي

    ✧ The womb is a branch from the Merciful, holding onto His waist, pleading for its right. He says: 'Are you not content that I maintain ties with whoever maintains you and sever ties with whoever severs you? Whoever maintains you has maintained Me, and whoever severs you has severed Me.'

    إِنَّ الرَّحِمَ شِجْنَةٌ مِنِّي، فَمَنْ وَصَلَهَا وَصَلْتُهُ، وَمَنْ قَطَعَهَا قَطَعْتُهُ

    ✧ The womb is a branch from Me. Whoever maintains it, I maintain him, and whoever severs it, I sever him.

    إِنَّهُ جَمَعَهُمْ فِي مَرَاسِيهِمْ فِي مَغْزَاهُمْ فِي الْبَحْرِ، وَمَرْكَبِ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ ؓ، قَالَ: فَلَمَّا حَضَرَ غَدَاؤُنَا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَى أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ ؓ وَأَهْلِ مَرْكَبِهِ، فَأَتَانَا أَبُو أَيُّوبَ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّكُمْ دَعَوْتُمُونِي وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ، وَكَانَ عَلَيَّ مِنَ الْحَقِّ أَنْ أُجِيبَكُمْ، إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: « لِلْمُسْلِمِ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِ سِتُّ خِصَالٍ وَاجِبَةٍ، فَمَنْ تَرَكَ مِنْهَا خَصْلَةً تَرَكَ حَقًّا وَاجِبًا لِأَخِيهِ عَلَيْهِ: أَنْ يُجِيبَهُ إِذَا دَعَاهُ، وَيُسَلِّمَ عَلَيْهِ إِذَا لَقِيَهُ، وَيُشَمِّتَهُ إِذَا عَطَسَ، وَيَعُودَهُ إِذَا مَرِضَ، وَيُشَيِّعَ جِنَازَتَهُ إِذَا مَاتَ، وَيَنْصَحَهُ إِذَا اسْتَنْصَحَهُ

    ✧ He gathered them at their anchorage during their naval expedition, on the ship of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari ؓ. He said: When our lunch was ready, we sent for Abu Ayyub al-Ansari ؓ and the people of his ship. Abu Ayyub came to us and said: 'You invited me while I am fasting, and it was incumbent upon me to answer you. I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "A Muslim has six obligatory rights over a Muslim. Whoever abandons any of them has abandoned an obligatory right for his brother: to answer him when he invites him, to greet him when he meets him, to bless him when he sneezes, to visit him when he is ill, to follow his funeral when he dies, and to counsel him when he seeks counsel."'

    ✧ And there was among us a humorous man, and a man who supervised our expenses.

    غَزَوْنَا الْبَحْرَ مَعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ ؓ، فَانْضَمَّ مَرْكَبُنَا إِلَى مَرْكَبٍ فِيهِ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ ؓ، فَلَمَّا حَضَرَ غَذَاؤُنَا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْهِ، فَأَتَانَا فَقَالَ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ، قَالَ: وَكَانَ مَعَنَا رَجُلٌ مَزَّاحٌ، فَكَانَ يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِ طَعَامِنَا: يَا فُلَانُ، جَزَاكَ اللهُ خَيْرًا وَشَرًّا، فَإِذَا أَكْثَرَ عَلَيْهِ جَعَلَ يُغْضِبُهُ وَيَشْتُمُهُ، فَقَالَ الْمَزَّاحُ: مَا تَقُولُ أَبَا أَيُّوبَ إِذَا أَنَا قُلْتُ: جَزَاكَ اللهُ خَيْرًا وَشَرًّا، فَشَتَمَنِي ؟ فَقَالَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ: أَقُلْتَ لَهُ، فَإِنَّا كُنَّا نَقُولُ: « مَنْ لَمْ يُصْلِحْهُ الْخَيْرُ أَصْلَحَهُ الشَّرُّ »، فَقَالَ الْمَزَّاحُ لِلرَّجُلِ: جَزَاكَ اللهُ شَرًّا وَعَرًّا، فَضَحِكَ وَرَضِيَ، وَقَالَ: لَا تَدَعَنَّ بَطَالَتَكَ عَلَى حَالٍ، فَقَالَ الْمَزَّاحُ: جَزَا اللهُ أَبَا أَيُّوبَ خَيْرًا قَدْ قَالَ لِي

    ✧ We went out to sea with Mu'awiyah ؓ, and our ship joined up with a ship in which Abu Ayyub ؓ was. When our food was ready, we sent for him and he came to us and said… and he mentioned the hadith. He said: There was with us a jester who would say to the man in charge of our food: 'O so-and-so, may Allah reward you with good and evil.' When he did that to him a lot, the man started getting angry with him and insulting him. The jester said: 'What do you say, Abu Ayyub, if I say: May Allah reward you with good and evil, and he insults me?' Abu Ayyub said: 'You said to him: We used to say: "Whoever good does not set right, evil will set right."' The jester said to the man: 'May Allah reward you with evil and shame.' The man laughed and was pleased, and said: 'Do not ever give up your jesting.' The jester said: 'May Allah reward Abu Ayyub with good, for he said to me.'

    كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْتِي ضُعَفَاءَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، وَيَعُودُ مَرْضَاهُمْ، وَيَشْهَدُ جَنَائِزَهُمْ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to go to the weak among the Muslims, visit their sick, and attend their funerals.

    وَقَالَ إِسْحَاقُ: وَذُكِرَ لَنَا عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ حُسَيْنٍ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَذْكُرُ، يَعْنِي عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ؓ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مِثْلَهُ. قُلْتُ: طَرِيقُ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ حُسَيْنٍ أَسْنَدَهَا أَبُو يَعْلَى، وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ، وَسُفْيَانُ فِي حَدِيثِهِ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ضَعْفٌ، لَكِنَّهُ يَقْوَى بِرِوَايَةِ الْوَلِيدِ عَنِ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ

    ✧ Ishaq said: It was mentioned to us from Sufyan b. Husayn that he used to mention, meaning from al-Zuhri, from Abu Umamah, from his father ؓ, from the Prophet ﷺ something similar. I say: The route of Sufyan b. Husayn was transmitted with full chain by Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani, and Sufyan in his narration from al-Zuhri is weak, but it is strengthened by the narration of al-Walid from al-Awza'i.

    « مَنْ نَصَرَ أَخَاهُ الْمُسْلِمَ بِظَهْرِ الْغَيْبِ نَصَرَهُ اللهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ، وَمَنْ سَتَرَ أَخَاهُ الْمُسْلِمَ سَتَرَهُ اللهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ

    ✧ Whoever supports his Muslim brother in his absence, Allah will support him in this world and the Hereafter. And whoever conceals the faults of his Muslim brother, Allah will conceal his faults in this world and the Hereafter.

    ✧ They used to say: The Muslim is the mirror of his brother; he shows him from himself what he does not see from himself.

    « إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ شُعْبَةٌ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِ، لَدَيْهِ حَاجَتُهُ، كَانَ لَهُ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَتَكَلَّفَ ; يَفْرَحُ لِفَرَحِهِ، وَيَحْزَنُ لِحُزْنِهِ، وَهُوَ مِرْآةُ أَخِيهِ، إِنْ رَأَى فِيهِ مَا لَا يُعْجِبُهُ سَدَّدَهُ، وَقَوَّمَهُ وَوَجَّهَهُ، وَخَاصَمَهُ فِي السِّرِّ وَالْعَلَانِيَةِ

    ✧ The believer is a branch of the believer. If he has a need, he should make an effort for him; he rejoices at his joy and grieves at his grief. He is the mirror of his brother; if he sees in him what he dislikes, he corrects him, straightens him, guides him, and disputes with him in private and in public.

    جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَاحْتَبَى بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، عَلِّمْنِي، فَإِنِّي أَعْرَابِيٌّ جَافٍ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « اتَّقِ اللهَ، وَلَا تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا، وَلَوْ أَنْ تَصُبَّ مِنْ إِنَائِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ صَاحِبِكَ، وَلَوْ أَنْ تَلْقَى أَخَاكَ وَأَنْتَ مُنْبَسِطٌ إِلَيْهِ بِوَجْهِكَ

    ✧ A Bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ and sat with his knees drawn up in front of him. He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me, for I am a rough Bedouin.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: 'Fear Allah, and do not consider any act of goodness insignificant, even if it is pouring from your bucket into your companion's bucket, and even if you meet your brother with a cheerful face.'

    « وَإِنِ امْرُؤٌ شَتَمَكَ فَعَيَّرَكَ بِمَا هُوَ يَعْلَمُهُ مِنْكَ، فَلَا تُعَيِّرْهُ بِأَمْرٍ تَعْلَمُهُ مِنْهُ، فَإِنَّهُ يَكُونُ وَبَالُ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِ وَآخِرُهُ لَكَ

    ✧ If a man insults you and taunts you about something he knows about you, do not taunt him about something you know about him, for the bad consequence of that will be upon him and its final benefit will be yours.

    كُنْتُ مَعَ النَّجَدَاتِ... فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ. قَالَ: فَلَمَّا رَأَى ابْنُ عُمَرَ ؓ فَرَقِي، قَالَ: « أَتَخَافُ أَنْ تَدْخُلَ النَّارَ ؟ قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: أَفَتُحِبُّ أَنْ تَدْخُلَ الْجَنَّةَ ؟ فَقُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، فَقَالَ: أَحَيٌّ وَالِدَاكَ ؟ فَقُلْتُ: عِنْدِي أُمِّي، فَقَالَ: « وَاللهِ لَئِنْ أَلَنْتَ لَهَا الْكَلَامَ، وَأَطْعَمْتَهَا الطَّعَامَ، لَتَدْخُلَنَّ الْجَنَّةَ، مَا اجْتَنَبْتَ الْمُوجِبَاتِ

    ✧ I was with the Najadat… and he mentioned the hadith. He said: When Ibn Umar ؓ saw that I was afraid, he said: 'Do you fear entering the Fire?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Would you like to enter Paradise?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Are your parents alive?' I said: 'I have my mother.' He said: 'By Allah, if you speak softly to her and feed her food, you will surely enter Paradise, as long as you avoid the major sins.'

    إِنَّهَا سَمِعَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُوصِي بَعْضَ أَهْلِهِ قَالَ: « وَأَطِعْ وَالِدَيْكَ، وَإِنْ أَمَرَاكَ أَنْ تَخْرُجَ مِنْ مِلْكِكَ

    ✧ She heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ advise some of his family. He said: 'Obey your parents, even if they command you to leave your property.'

    « وَأَطِعْ وَالِدَيْك وَإِنْ أَمَرَاك أَنْ تَخْرُجَ مِنْ مَلِكِك وَلا تَتْرُكِ الصَّلاةَ مُتَعَمِّدًا فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ تَرَكَ الصَّلاةَ مُتَعَمِّدًا فَقَدْ بَرِئَتْ مِنْهُ ذِمَّةُ اللهِ تَعَالَى وَإِيَّاكَ وَالْخَمْرَ فَإِنَّهَا مِفْتَاحُ كُلِّ شَرٍّ وَإِيَّاكَ وَالْمَعْصِيَةَ فَإِنَّهَا تُسْخِطُ الله عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَلا تُنَازِعِ الْأَمْرَ أَهْلَهُ وَإِنْ رَأَيْتَ أَنَّهُ الْحَقُّ أَنْفِقْ عَلَى أَهْلِكَ مِنْ طَوْلِكَ وَلا تَرْفَعْ عَصَاكَ عَنْهُمْ وَأَخِفْهُمْ فِي اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ" نوع="مرفوع"

    ✧ Obey your parents, even if they command you to leave your property. Do not abandon prayer deliberately, for whoever abandons prayer deliberately has disassociated himself from the protection of Allah, the Exalted. Beware of wine, for it is the key to every evil. Beware of disobedience, for it angers Allah, the Mighty and Sublime. Do not dispute authority with its people, even if you think that you are right. Spend on your family from your means, and do not raise your staff from them, and make them fear Allah, the Mighty and Sublime.

    ✧ We used to read among what was read: “Do not renounce your fathers, for that is disbelief on your part.”

    ✧ “If your mother calls you while you are in prayer, then answer her; but if your father calls you, do not answer him until you finish.”

    « مَا مِنْ مُسْلِمٍ يُصْبِحُ وَوَالِدَاهُ عَنْهُ رَاضِيَانِ، إِلَّا كَانَ لَهُ بَابَانِ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ، وَإِنْ كَانَ وَاحِدًا فَوَاحِدٌ، وَمَا مِنْ مُسْلِمٍ يُصْبِحُ وَوَالِدَاهُ عَلَيْهِ سَاخِطَانِ، إِلَّا كَانَ لَهُ بَابَانِ مِنَ النَّارِ، وَإِنْ كَانَ وَاحِدًا فَوَاحِدٌ

    ✧ “There is no Muslim who wakes up with both parents pleased with him except that he will have two gates of Paradise; and if only one, then one. And there is no Muslim who wakes up with both parents angry with him except that he will have two gates of the Fire; and if only one, then one.”

    أُرَاهُ رَجُلًا، يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، فَإِنْ ظَلَمَاهُ ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: « وَإِنْ ظَلَمَاهُ، وَإِنْ ظَلَمَاهُ، وَإِنْ ظَلَمَاهُ » ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ

    ✧ I see him as a man, O Messenger of Allah, what if they wrong him? Heﷺ said: “Even if they wrong him, even if they wrong him, even if they wrong him,” three times.

    قُلْتُ لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ: إِنِّي رَجُلٌ حَرِيصٌ عَلَى الْجِهَادِ، وَلَيْسَ مِنْ قَوْمِي أَحَدٌ إِلَّا قَدْ لَحِقَ بِالْأَمْصَارِ أَوْ بِالْجِهَادِ غَيْرُ وَالِدَيَّ، أَوْ قَالَ: غَيْرُ أَهْلِي وَأَبَوَيَّ، أَوْ قَالَ: أَبِي كَارِهٌ لِذَلِكَ، فَنَظَرَ إِلَيَّ، فَقَالَ: « لَا يَكُونُ لِرَجُلٍ أَبَوَانِ فَيُصْبِحُ مُحْسِنًا إِلَّا فُتِحَ لَهُ بَابٌ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ، وَلَا يُمْسِي وَهُوَ مُحْسِنٌ إِلَّا فُتِحَ لَهُ بَابَانِ مِنْ أَبْوَابِ الْجَنَّةِ »، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: مُحْسِنٌ إِلَيْهِمَا ؟ قَالَ: « نَعَمْ، فَإِنْ كَانَ وَاحِدًا فَأَصْبَحَ مُحْسِنًا فُتِحَ لَهُ بَابٌ مِنْ أَبْوَابِ الْجَنَّةِ، وَلَا يَسْخَطُ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدُهُمَا أَوْ وَاحِدٌ مِنْهُمَا، فَيَ ؓ حَتَّى يَرْضَى »، قُلْتُ: وَإِنْ كَانَ لَهُ ظَالِمًا ؟ قَالَ: « وَإِنْ كَانَ لَهُ ظَالِمًا »

    ✧ I said to Ibn ʿAbbas ؓ: “I am a man eager for jihad, and there is no one of my people except that he has joined the garrisons or the jihad, except my parents,” or he said: “except my family and my two parents,” or he said: “my father is averse to that.” He looked at me and said: “A man will not have two parents and wake up treating them well except that a gate to Paradise is opened for him, and he will not spend the evening treating them well except that two gates of the gates of Paradise are opened for him.” He said: I said: “Treating them well?” He said: “Yes. And if there is only one, and he wakes up treating him well, a gate of the gates of Paradise is opened for him, and none of them is angry with him or one of them, so he ؓ continues until he is pleased.” I said: “Even if he was wronging him?” He said: “Even if he was wronging him.”

    إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ صَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ، فَلَمَّا وَضَعَ رِجْلَهُ عَلَى الدَّرَجَةِ الدُّنْيَا، قَالَ: « آمِينَ »، ثُمَّ وَضَعَ رِجْلَهُ ﷺ عَلَى الثَّانِيَةِ، فَقَالَ: « آمِينَ »، ثُمَّ وَضَعَ رِجْلَهُ ﷺ عَلَى الدَّرَجَةِ الثَّالِثَةِ فَقَالَ: « آمِينَ »، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ ﷺ مِنْ خُطْبَتِهِ وَنَزَلَ، قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، فَعَلْتَ كَذَا وَكَذَا ؟ فَقَالَ ﷺ: « إِنَّ جِبْرِيلَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ أَتَانِي حِينَ وَضَعْتُ رِجْلِي عَلَى الدَّرَجَةِ الدُّنْيَا، فَقَالَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ، مَنْ أَدْرَكَ وَالِدَيْهِ أَوْ أَحَدَهُمَا فَلَمْ يُغْفَرْ لَهُ، فَمَاتَ فَدَخَلَ النَّارَ فَأَبْعَدَهُ اللهُ، قُلْ: آمِينَ، قُلْتُ: آمِينَ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the pulpit one day. When he placed his foot on the lowest step, he said: “Amin.” Then he placed his foot ﷺ on the second, and said: “Amin.” Then he placed his foot ﷺ on the third step, and said: “Amin.” When he ﷺ finished his sermon and descended, they said: “O Messenger of Allah, you did such and such?” He ﷺ said: “Indeed Jibril ﷺ came to me when I placed my foot on the lowest step and said: ‘O Muhammad, whoever reaches his two parents or one of them and is not forgiven, then dies and enters the Fire, may Allah distance him. Say: Amin.’ I said: ‘Amin.’”

    كَانَ الْهُذَيْلُ بْنُ حَفْصَةَ يَجْمَعُ الْحَطَبَ فِي الصَّيْفِ فَيُقَشِّرُهُ، وَيَأْخُذُ الْقَصَبَ فَيَفْلِقُهُ، قَالَتْ حَفْصَةُ: فَكُنْتُ أَجِدُ قِرَّةً فَكَانَ يَجِيءُ بِالْكَانُونِ حَتَّى يَضَعَهُ خَلْفِي وَأَنَا أُصَلِّي، وَعِنْدَهُ مَنْ يَكْفِيهِ لَوْ أَرَادَ ذَلِكَ، فَيُوقِدُ لِي ذَلِكَ الْحَطَبَ الْمُقَشَّرَ وَالْقَصَبَ الْمُفَلَّقَ وَقُودًا يُدْفِئُنِي وَلَا يُؤْذِينِي الْحَرُّ، قَالَتْ: فَرُبَّمَا أَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَنْصَرِفَ إِلَيْهِ، وَأَقُولَ: يَا بُنَيَّ، ارْجِعْ إِلَى أَهْلِكَ، ثُمَّ أَذْكُرُ مَا يُرِيدُ فَأُخَلِّي عَنْهُ، وَكَانَ يَغْزُو وَيَحُجُّ، فَأَصَابَتْهُ حُمَّى وَقَدْ حَضَرَ الْحَجُّ فَنَقِهَ، فَلَمْ أَشْعُرْ حَتَّى أَهَلَّ بِالْحَجِّ، قُلْتُ: يَا بُنَيَّ، كَأَنَّكَ خِفْتَ أَنْ أَمْنَعَكَ، مَا كُنْتُ لِأَفْعَلَ، قَالَ: وَكَانَتْ لَهُ لَقْحَةٌ فَكَانَ يَبْعَثُ إِلَيَّ حَلْبَةً بِالْغَدَاةِ، فَأَقُولُ يَا بُنَيَّ: إِنَّكَ لَتَعْلَمُ أَنَّنِي لَا أَشْرَبُهُ وَأَنَا صَائِمَةٌ، فَيَقُولُ: يَا أُمَّ الْهُذَيْلِ، إِنَّ أَطْيَبَ اللَّبَنِ مَا بَاتَ فِي ضَرْعِ الْإِبِلِ، اسْقِيهِ مَنْ شِئْتِ، قَالَتْ: فَلَمَّا مَاتَ رَزَقَ اللهُ تَعَالَى عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الصَّبْرِ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ أَنْ يَرْزُقَ، غَيْرَ أَنِّي كُنْتُ أَجِدُ غُصَّةً لَا تَذْهَبُ، فَبَيْنَمَا أَنَا أُصَلِّي ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ وَأَنَا أَقْرَأُ سُورَةَ النَّحْلِ، حَتَّى أَتَيْتُ عَلَى هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ: وَلا تَشْتَرُوا بِعَهْدِ اللهِ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلا إِنَّمَا عِنْدَ اللهِ هُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ مَا عِنْدَكُمْ يَنْفَدُ وَمَا عِنْدَ اللهِ بَاقٍ وَلَنَجْزِيَنَّ الَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا أَجْرَهُمْ بِأَحْسَنِ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ قَالَتْ: فَأَعَدْتُهَا، فَأَذْهَبَ اللهُ مَا كُنْتُ أَجِدُ

    ✧ Al-Hudhayl b. Hafsah used to gather firewood in the summer and strip it, and take reeds and split them. Hafsah said: I used to feel cold, and he would come with the brazier until he placed it behind me while I was praying, though he had someone who could suffice him if he wished. He would light that stripped firewood and split reeds as fuel to warm me without the heat harming me. She said: Sometimes I wanted to turn to him and say: My son, go back to your family, then I would remember what he wanted and leave him be. He used to go on military expeditions and perform Hajj. He was struck by a fever when the Hajj was near, and he recovered, and I was not aware until he had entered the state of ihram for Hajj. I said: My son, it is as if you feared that I would prevent you; I would not do so. He said: She had a milch-camel, and he used to send me a portion of milk in the morning, and I would say: My son, you know that I do not drink it while I am fasting. He would say: O mother of al-Hudhayl, the best milk is that which has spent the night in the udder of the camels; give it to drink to whomever you wish. She said: When he died, God Almighty granted me patience as He willed, except that I felt a choking grief that would not go away. While I was praying one night, reciting Surah al-Nahl, I came to this verse: "And do not exchange the covenant of God for a small price. Indeed, what is with God is better for you, if only you knew. What is with you will perish, and what is with God will remain. And We will surely reward those who were patient with their reward according to the best of what they used to do." She said: I repeated it, and God removed what I had been feeling.

    ✧ I came to Madinah, and 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar ؓ came to me and said: Do you know why I came to you? I said: No. He said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'Whoever wishes to maintain ties with his father in his grave, let him maintain ties with his father's brothers after him.' And there was between my father 'Umar and your father brotherhood and affection, so I wished to maintain that.

    أَتَى رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أَشْتَهِي الْجِهَادَ وَلَا أَقْدِرُ عَلَيْهِ، قَالَ ﷺ: « هَلْ بَقِيَ مِنْ وَالِدَيْكَ أَحَدٌ ؟ » قَالَ: أُمِّي، قَالَ ﷺ: « فَأَبْلِ اللهَ فِي بِرِّهَا، فَإِنْ أَنْتَ فَعَلْتَ ذَلِكَ فَأَنْتَ حَاجٌّ وَمُعْتَمِرٌ وَمُجَاهِدٌ إِذَا رَضِيَتْ عَنْكَ أُمُّكَ، فَاتَّقِ اللهَ وَبَرَّهَا

    ✧ A man came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: I desire to fight in jihad but I am not able to. He ﷺ said: Is either of your parents still alive? He said: My mother. He ﷺ said: Then strive in God's cause by being kind to her. If you do that, you are a pilgrim, a performer of 'umrah, and a warrior in jihad, if your mother is pleased with you. So fear God and be kind to her.

    خَرَجَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ ؓ حَاجًّا، حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ بَيْنَ مَكَّةَ وَالْمَدِينَةِ أَتَى شَجَرَةً يَعْرِفُهَا، فَجَلَسَ تَحْتَهَا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ تَحْتَ شَجَرَةٍ، إِذْ أَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ شَابٌّ مِنْ هَذِهِ الشِّعَابِ، حَتَّى وَقَفَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنِّي جِئْتُ لِأُجَاهِدَ مَعَكَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ تَعَالَى ; أَبْتَغِي بِذَلِكَ وَجْهَ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَالدَّارَ الْآخِرَةَ، قَالَ ﷺ: أَبَوَاكَ حَيَّانِ كِلَاهُمَا ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ ﷺ: « فَاخْرُجْ فَبِرَّهُمَا »، قَالَ: فَانْفَتَلَ رَاجِعًا مِنْ حَيْثُ جَاءَ

    ✧ Ibn 'Umar ؓ set out for Hajj, until when he was between Makkah and Madinah, he came to a tree he recognized and sat beneath it. Then he said: I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ beneath a tree when a young man came from these mountain paths until he stood before the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: O Messenger of God, I have come to fight in jihad with you in the path of God Almighty, seeking thereby the face of God, Mighty and Majestic, and the Hereafter. He ﷺ said: Are both your parents alive? He said: Yes. He ﷺ said: Then go back and be kind to them. He said: So he turned back to where he came from.

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ had two freed slaves: an Abyssinian and a Nabataean. They insulted each other while the Prophet ﷺ was listening. One said to his companion: O Abyssinian, and the other said: O Nabataean. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Do not say this; you are but two men from among the companions of Muhammad ﷺ.'

    « مَنْ آوَى يَتِيمًا مِنْ بَيْنِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ إِلَى طَعَامِهِ وَشَرَابِهِ حَتَّى يُشْبِعَهُ، وَجَبَتْ لَهُ الْجَنَّةُ، إِلَّا أَنْ يَعْمَلَ ذَنْبًا لَا يُغْفَرُ لَهُ، وَمَنْ عَالَ ثَلَاثَ بَنَاتٍ، فَأَدَّبَهُنَّ وَأَحْسَنَ إِلَيْهِنَّ، وَجَبَتْ لَهُ الْجَنَّةُ » قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ، أَوِ ابْنَتَانِ ؟ قَالَ: « أَوِ ابْنَتَانِ »، حَتَّى لَوْ قَالُوا: وَاحِدَةٌ، لَقَالَ: وَاحِدَةٌ، « وَمَنْ أَذْهَبَ كَرِيمَتَيْهِ، كَانَ ثَوَابُهُ عَلَى اللهِ الْجَنَّةَ » قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، وَمَا كَرِيمَتَاهُ ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: « عَيْنَاهُ »، فَكَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ إِذَا حَدَّثَ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ، قَالَ: هَذَا مِنْ كَرَائِمِ الْحَدِيثِ وَغُرَرِهِ

    ✧ Whoever shelters an orphan from among the Muslims, bringing him into his food and drink until he is satisfied, Paradise becomes incumbent for him, unless he commits a sin that is not forgiven. And whoever supports three daughters, disciplining them and treating them well, Paradise becomes incumbent for him." They said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, or two daughters?"     ✧ We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a boy came to him with his sister. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, an orphan boy and his orphan sister. Feed us from what Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has fed you; may Allah give you from His own until you are pleased." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "How excellent is what you said, O boy! O Bilal, go to our family and bring us whatever food you find with them." Bilal ؓ brought him twenty-one dates. He said, "He placed them in his palm, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured with his hand toward his mouth, and we saw that he was supplicating. Then he ﷺ said, 'Seven for you, seven for your mother, and seven for your sister; eat lunch with one date and dinner with one date.'" The boy was from the children of the Muhajirun. When he stood up, Mu'adh ؓ followed him, placed his hand on his head and wiped it, and said, "May Allah mend your orphanhood, O boy, and make you a successor to your father." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I saw you and what you did." He said, "O Messenger of Allah, it was out of mercy for him." He ﷺ said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, no man takes an orphan to himself, treats him well as his guardian, then places his hand on his head, except that Allah (Blessed and Exalted) writes for him a good deed for every hair, erases from him a bad deed for every hair, and raises him a degree for every hair."

    ✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, I am a man who loves to be praised, and it was as if he feared for himself. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Is it not enough for you to live praised and die missed? I was sent only to perfect noble character."

    أَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ: أَيُّ الْإِيمَانِ أَفْضَلُ ؟ قَالَ: « الْخُلُقُ الْحَسَنُ »، فَأَعَادَ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: « الْخُلُقُ الْحَسَنُ » فَأَعَادَ عَلَيْهِ الثَّالِثَةَ أَوِ الرَّابِعَةَ، فَإِمَّا أَقَامَهُ وَإِمَّا أَقْعَدَهُ، قَالَ ﷺ: « أَنْ تَلْقَى أَخَاكَ وَأَنْتَ طَلِيقٌ »، قَالَ: ثُمَّ مَا زَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُحَسِّنُ الْخُلُقَ الْحَسَنَ، وَيَقُولُ: « هُوَ مِنَ اللهِ »، وَيُقَبِّحُ الْخُلُقَ السُّوءَ « وَيَقُولُ: هُوَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: « أَلَا تَنْظُرُونَ إِلَى حُمْرَةِ عَيْنَيْهِ وَانْتِفَاخِ أَوْدَاجِهِ

    ✧ A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Which part of faith is most excellent? He said: "Good character." He repeated it to him, and he said: "Good character." He repeated it to him a third or fourth time, then either he made him stand or sit. He ﷺ said: "That you meet your brother with a cheerful face." He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept commending good character, saying: "It is from Allah," and condemning bad character, saying: "It is from Satan." Then he said: "Do you not look at the redness of his eyes and the swelling of his jugular veins?"
