✧ Al-Hudhayl b. Hafsah used to gather firewood in the summer and strip it, and take reeds and split them. Hafsah said: I used to feel cold, and he would come with the brazier until he placed it behind me while I was praying, though he had someone who could suffice him if he wished. He would light that stripped firewood and split reeds as fuel to warm me without the heat harming me. She said: Sometimes I wanted to turn to him and say: My son, go back to your family, then I would remember what he wanted and leave him be. He used to go on military expeditions and perform Hajj. He was struck by a fever when the Hajj was near, and he recovered, and I was not aware until he had entered the state of ihram for Hajj. I said: My son, it is as if you feared that I would prevent you; I would not do so. He said: She had a milch-camel, and he used to send me a portion of milk in the morning, and I would say: My son, you know that I do not drink it while I am fasting. He would say: O mother of al-Hudhayl, the best milk is that which has spent the night in the udder of the camels; give it to drink to whomever you wish. She said: When he died, God Almighty granted me patience as He willed, except that I felt a choking grief that would not go away. While I was praying one night, reciting Surah al-Nahl, I came to this verse: "And do not exchange the covenant of God for a small price. Indeed, what is with God is better for you, if only you knew. What is with you will perish, and what is with God will remain. And We will surely reward those who were patient with their reward according to the best of what they used to do." She said: I repeated it, and God removed what I had been feeling.
