    ✧ O people, seek treatment, for Allah the Exalted did not create any disease but that He created for it a cure, except old age.

    دَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَى أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ ؓ، وَعِنْدَهَا صَبِيٌّ يَنْبَعِثُ مَنْخِرَاهُ دَمًا، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: « مَا هَذَا ؟ » قَالُوا: بِهِ الْعُذْرَةُ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: « عَلَامَ تُعَذِّبْنَ أَوْلَادَكُنَّ، إِنَّمَا يَكْفِي إِحْدَاكُنَّ أَنْ تَأْخُذَ قُسْطًا هِنْدِيًّا، فَتَحُكَّهُ بِمَاءٍ سَبْعَ مَرَّاتٍ، ثُمَّ تُوجِرَهُ إِيَّاهُ » قَالَ: فَفَعَلُوا فَبَرَأَ

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ entered upon Umm Salamah ؓ, and with her was a boy whose nostrils were gushing blood. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'What is this?' They said: 'He has the 'udhrah (inflammation of the throat/tonsils).' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Why do you torment your children? It is enough for one of you to take Indian costus, rub it with water seven times, and then pour it into his mouth.' He said: So they did that, and he recovered.

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: 'O 'Ali, do not face the sun, for facing it is a disease, and having it behind you is a cure.'

    مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِالرِّجْلَةِ، وَفِي رِجْلِهِ قُرْحَةٌ، فَدَاوَاهَا بِهَا فَبَرَأَتْ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: « بَارَكَ اللهُ فِيكِ، أَنْبِتِي حَيْثُ شِئْتِي، فَأَنْتِ شِفَاءٌ مِنْ سَبْعِينَ دَاءً أَدْنَاهُ الصُّدَاعُ

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ passed by purslane while he had a sore on his leg, and he treated it with it and it healed. Then the Prophet ﷺ said: “May Allah bless you. Grow wherever you wish, for you are a healing from seventy diseases, the least of which is headache.”

    دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَيَدُهُ فِي يَدِي، فَأَتَى عَلَى رَجُلٍ رَثِّ الْهَيْئَةِ، فَقَالَ: « أَبُو فُلَانٍ ! مَا بَلَغَ بِكَ مَا أَرَى » ؟ قَالَ: السَّقَمُ وَالضُّرُّ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: « أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكَ كَلِمَاتٍ يُذْهِبُ اللهُ عَنْكَ السَّقَمَ وَالضُّرَّ » ؟ قَالَ: لَا، مَا يَسُرُّنِي بِهَا أَنِّي شَهِدْتُ مَعَكَ بَدْرًا وَأُحُدًا، قَالَ: فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ: « وَهَلْ يُدْرِكُ أَهْلُ بَدْرٍ وَأَهْلُ أُحُدٍ مَا يُدْرِكُ الْفَقِيرُ الْقَانِعُ » ؟ قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ: فَقُلْتُ: إِيَّايَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَعَلِّمْنِي، فَقَالَ ﷺ: " قُلْ يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ: تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى الْحَيِّ الَّذِي لَا يَمُوتُ الْحَمْدُ لِلهِ الَّذِي لَمْ يَتَّخِذْ وَلَدًا وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ شَرِيكٌ فِي الْمُلْكِ الْآيَةَ، فَأَتَى عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَقَدْ حَسُنَتْ حَالِي، فَقَالَ: « مَهْيَمْ ؟ » فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، لَمْ أَزَلْ أَقُولُ الْكَلِمَاتِ الَّتِي عَلَّمْتَنِيهِنَّ

    ✧ I entered with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while his hand was in mine. He came upon a man of shabby appearance and said: “O Abu so-and-so, what has brought you to the state I see?” He said: “Sickness and harm, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Shall I not teach you some words by which Allah may remove from you sickness and harm?” He said: “No, it would not please me to have them even if I had been present with you at Badr and Uhud.” He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed, then said: “Would the people of Badr and the people of Uhud attain what the contented poor person attains?” Abu Hurayrah ؓ said: I said, “Teach me, O Messenger of Allah.” He ﷺ said: “Say, O Abu Hurayrah: ‘I have put my trust in the Ever-Living who does not die. Praise be to Allah who has not taken a son, and who has no partner in dominion’—the verse. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came upon me after my condition had improved and said: ‘Mahyam?’ I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, I have not ceased saying the words you taught me.’”

    كُنْتُ جَالِسًا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَتَبَسَّمَ، فَقُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، مِمَّ تَبَسَّمْتَ ؟ قَالَ: « عَجِبْتُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِ وَجَزَعِهِ مِنَ السَّقَمِ، وَلَوْ يَعْلَمُ مَا لَهُ فِي السَّقَمِ لَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ سَقِيمًا حَتَّى يَلْقَى رَبَّهُ ». ثُمَّ تَبَسَّمَ الثَّانِيَةَ وَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا، فَقَالُوا: مِمَّ تَبَسَّمْتَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ؟ قَالَ: « عَجِبْتُ لِمَلَكَيْنِ نَزَلَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ يَلْتَمِسَانِ مُؤْمِنًا فِي مُصَلَّاهُ الَّذِي كَانَ يُصَلِّي فِيهِ، فَلَمْ يَجِدَاهُ، فَعَرَجَا إِلَى اللهِ تَعَالَى، فَقَالَا: يَا رَبِّ إِنَّ عَبْدَكَ فُلَانًا كُنَّا نَكْتُبُ لَهُ مِنَ الْعَمَلِ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ كَذَا وَكَذَا، وَإِنَّكَ حَبَسْتَهُ فِي حِبَالِكَ، يَعْنِي: الْمَرَضَ، فَقَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى لَهُمَا: اكْتُبَا لِعَبْدِي مِثْلَ مَا يَعْمَلُ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ وَلَيْلَةٍ، وَلَا تَنْقُصَاهُ شَيْئًا، فَلَهُ أَجْرُ مَا عَمِلَ عَلَى أَجْرِ مَا حَبَسْتَهُ

    ✧ I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he smiled. We said: “O Messenger of Allah, what made you smile?” He said: “I marvel at the believer and his distress at illness. If he knew what he has in illness, he would love to remain ill until he meets his Lord.” Then he smiled a second time, raised his head to the sky, and looked at it. They said: “What made you smile, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “I marvel at two angels who descended from the sky seeking a believer in his prayer place where he used to pray, but they did not find him. They ascended to Allah Almighty and said: ‘O Lord, Your servant so-and-so, we used to record for him such-and-such deeds every day, but You have detained him in Your bonds,’ meaning illness. Allah Almighty said to them: ‘Record for My servant the like of what he used to do every day and night, and do not reduce anything from it. He shall have the reward of what he did in addition to the reward for what I have detained him with.’”

    « عَجِبْت لِلْمُؤْمِنِ وَجَزَعه مِنَ السَّقَمِ وَلَوْ يُعَلِّمُ مَا لَهُ فِي السَّقَمِ لِأُحِبّ أَنْ يَكُونَ سَقِيمًا حَتَّى يَلْقَى رَبّه » ثُمَّ تَبَسَّمَ الثَّانِيَة وَرَفْع رَأْسِهِ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا فَقَالُوا مِمَّ تَبَسَّمَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ « عَجِبْت لِمَلِكَيْنِ نَزَلَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ يَلْتَمِسَانِ مُؤْمِنًا فِي مُصَلَّاهُ الَّذِي كَانَ يُصَلِّي فِيهِ فَلَمْ يَجِدَاهُ فَعَرَجَا إِلَى اللهِ تَعَالَى فَقَالَا يَا رَبّ إِنْ عَبَدَك فُلَان كُنَّا نَكْتُبُ لَهُ مِنَ الْعَمَلِ فِي كُلِّ يَوْم كَذَا وَكَذَا وَإِنَّك حَبَسْته فِي حِبَالِك يَعْنِي الْمَرَضُ فَقَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى لَهُمَا اكْتُبَا لِعَبْدِي مِثْلَ مَا يَعْمَل كُلُّ يَوْم وَلَيْلَة وَلَا تَنْقُصَاهُ شَيْئًا فَلَهُ أَجْرٌ مَا عَمِلَ عَلَى أَجْرٍ مَا حَبَسَتْهُ" نوع="مرفوع"

    ✧ “I marvel at the believer and his distress at illness.     « إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَتَكُونُ لَهُ الدَّرَجَةُ عِنْدَ اللهِ تَعَالَى، فَمَا يَبْلُغُهَا بِعَمَلٍ حَتَّى يُبْتَلَى فِي جَسَدِهِ، فَيَبْلُغُهَا بِذَلِكَ الْبَلَاءِ

    ✧ A man may have a rank with Allah Almighty that he does not attain by deeds until he is afflicted in his body, and thus he attains it through that affliction.

    ✧ Abu Bakr said: Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, and he added between Jabalah and Ibn Mas'ud: from someone who informed him.

    اشْتَكَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَاشْتَدَّ عَلَيْهِ، فَلَمَّا أَفَاقَ، قُلْتُ: لَوْ أَنَّ إِحْدَانَا فَعَلَتْ هَذَا خَشِيتُ عَلَيْهَا، فَقَالَ ﷺ: « أَوَلَا تَعْلَمِينَ أَنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ يُشَدَّدُ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ وَجَعِهِ لِيُحَطَّ عَنْهُ مِنْ خَطَايَاهُ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell ill and it became severe for him. When he recovered, I said: “If any one of us did this, I would fear for her.” He ﷺ said: “Do you not know that the believer is afflicted severely in his pain so that his sins may be removed from him?”

    إِنَّهُ رَاحَ إِلَى مَسْجِدِ دِمَشْقَ وَهَجَّرَ بِالرَّوَاحِ، فَلَقِيَ شَدَّادَ بْنَ أَوْسٍ وَآخَرَ مَعَهُ، فَقَالَ: أَيْنَ تُرِيدَانِ، يَرْحَمُكُمَا اللهُ ؟ قَالَا: نُرِيدُ هَاهُنَا إِلَى أَخٍ لَنَا مَرِيضٍ نَعُودُهُ، قَالَ: فَانْطَلَقَ مَعَهُمَا حَتَّى دَخَلَا عَلَى ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلِ، فَقَالَا لَهُ: كَيْفَ أَصْبَحْتَ ؟ قَالَ: أَصْبَحْتُ بِنِعْمَةِ اللهِ وَفَضْلِهِ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ لَهُ شَدَّادٌ: أَبْشِرْ بِكَفَّارَاتِ السَّيِّئَاتِ، وَحَطِّ الْخَطَايَا، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: « إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَقُولُ: إِنِّي إِذَا ابْتَلَيْتُ عَبْدًا مِنْ عِبَادِي مُؤْمِنًا فَحَمِدَنِي عَلَى مَا ابْتَلَيْتُهُ، فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ يَقُومُ مَضْجَعَهُ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ كَيَوْمِ وَلَدَتْهُ أُمُّهُ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا، وَيَقُولُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: إِنِّي أَنَا قَيَّدْتُ عَبْدِي هَذَا وَابْتَلَيْتُهُ، فَأَجْرُوا لَهُ مَا كُنْتُمْ تُجْرُونَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، وَهُوَ صَحِيحٌ

    ✧ He went to the mosque of Damascus in the afternoon to perform the noon prayer early, and he met Shaddad b. Aws and another man with him. He said: “Where do you two intend, may Allah have mercy on you?” They said: “We intend to go here to a sick brother of ours to visit him.” He said: He went with them until they entered upon that man. They said to him: “How are you this morning?” He said: “I have entered the morning in the blessing of Allah and His grace.” He said: Shaddad said to him: “Rejoice in the expiations of sins and the removal of errors, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: When I afflict a believing servant of Mine and he praises Me for what I have afflicted him with, then he rises from his bed that day like the day his mother gave birth to him, free from sins. And Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: I have bound this servant of Mine and afflicted him, so record for him what you used to record for him while he was healthy.’”

    إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مَرَّ بِشَجَرَةٍ، فَهَزَّهَا حَتَّى تَسَاقَطَ مِنْ وَرَقِهَا مَا شَاءَ اللهُ أَنْ يَتَسَاقَطَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ ﷺ: « الْأَوْجَاعُ وَالْمُصِيبَاتُ أَسْرَعُ فِي ذُنُوبِ ابْنِ آدَمَ مِنِّي فِي هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a tree and shook it until as much of its leaves fell as Allah willed to fall. Then he ﷺ said: "Pains and calamities are faster in removing the sins of the son of Adam than I am in [removing the leaves from] this tree."

    ✧ "The example of the believer is like that of a grain stalk: it bends at times and stands upright at times."

    ✧ "A man may have a station with Allah Most High that he does not attain through any deed. He remains afflicted with what he dislikes until He causes him to attain it."

    ✧ Abu Ya'la said: 'Uqbah b. Mukram narrated to us, Yunus narrated to us with this [wording]. Ibn Hibban considered it sound.

    « مَا مِنْ مُسْلِمٍ يُصَابُ بِمُصِيبَةٍ، فَيَذْكُرُ مُصِيبَتَهُ بَعْدَ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً، فَيُحْدِثُ لَهَا اسْتِرْجَاعًا، إِلَّا أَعْطَاهُ اللهُ مِنَ الْأَجْرِ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ مِثْلَمَا أُعْطِيَ يَوْمَ أُصِيبَ

    ✧ "There is no Muslim who is afflicted with a calamity, and then remembers his calamity after forty years and renews his istirja' (saying 'Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return'), except that Allah gives him at that moment the like of the reward he was given on the day he was afflicted."

    دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ وَأَنَا مَرِيضٌ، مَغْلُوبٌ، فَقَالَ: صَلَّى صَاحِبُكُمْ ؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: أَمَا إِنِّي نُبِّئْتُ أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ عَبْدٌ يَشْتَكِي إِلَّا كَتَبَ اللهُ تَعَالَى لَهُ مَا كَانَ يَعْمَلُ وَهُوَ صَحِيحٌ، حَتَّى يَقْبِضَهُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَوْ يَرْفَعَهُ

    ✧ Abu Hurayrah ؓ entered upon me while I was sick and overcome. He said: "Did your companion pray?" They said: "Yes." He said: "I have been informed that there is no servant who complains of illness except that Allah Most High writes for him [the reward of] what he used to do when healthy, until Allah, Mighty and Majestic, takes his soul or restores him."

    « مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَمْرَضُ مَرَضًا إِلَّا أَمَرَ اللهُ حَافِظَيْهِ أَنَّ مَا عَمِلَ مِنْ سَيِّئَةٍ فَلَا يَكْتُبْهَا، وَمَا عَمِلَ مِنْ حَسَنَةٍ أَنْ يَكْتُبَهَا عَشْرَ حَسَنَاتٍ، وَأَنْ يَكْتُبَ لَهُ مِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا كَانَ يَعْمَلُ وَهُوَ صَحِيحٌ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَعْمَلْ

    ✧ "There is no servant who becomes ill with an illness except that Allah commands his two guardian angels: 'Whatever evil deed he performs, do not write it down; and whatever good deed he performs, write it as ten good deeds. And write for him [the reward of] the deeds he used to do when he was healthy, even if he does not perform them.'"

    ✧ A hefty bedouin, a man of large build, came to the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said to him: “When did you last have a fever?” He said: “I do not know what it is.” He ﷺ said: “And a headache?” He said: “I do not know what it is.” He ﷺ said: “Have you ever been afflicted in your wealth?” He said: “No.” He ﷺ said: “Have you ever lost a child?” He said: “No.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “God detests the obstinate, ill-tempered man who is not bereaved of a child and not afflicted in his wealth.”

    ✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ addressed us and mentioned the hadith at length, and in it: “Whoever visits a sick person, for every step he takes until he returns to his home, he gets seventy thousand good deeds, the erasure of seventy thousand bad deeds, and the raising of seventy thousand degrees. Seventy thousand angels are appointed for him, visiting him and seeking forgiveness for him until the Day of Resurrection. Whoever tends a sick person for a day and a night, God Most High will raise him with His intimate friend Ibrahim ﷺ until he crosses the Sirat like flashing lightning. Whoever strives to fulfill a sick person’s need comes out of his sins as on the day his mother gave birth to him.” A man from the Ansar said: “What if the sick person is his relative or one of his family?” He said: “Who has a greater reward than one who strives to meet his family’s need?”

If he dies before that, he enters Paradise; and if he lives, no single sin is written against him. If it is morning, seventy thousand angels pray over him until evening, and he is in the garden’s harvesting. If it is evening, seventy thousand angels pray over him until morning, and he is in the garden’s harvesting.     ✧ “These words are a cure for every disease: I seek refuge in the perfect words of God, and all His names in general, from the evil of poisonous and noxious creatures, from the evil of the evil eye, from the evil of the envier when he envies, and from the evil of Ibn Qatarah and what he begat. Thirty-three of the angels came to their Lord and said: ‘There is a plague in our land.’ The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Take from the dust of your land and wipe your foreheads with it. It is the ruqyah of Muhammad. Whoever takes a bribe for it or conceals it from anyone will never succeed.’”

    ✧ “These words are a cure for every disease: I seek refuge in the perfect words of God, and all His names in general, from the evil of poisonous and noxious creatures, from the evil of the evil eye, from the evil of the envier when he envies, and from the evil of Ibn Qitrah and what he begat. Thirty-three of the angels came to their Lord and said: ‘There is a plague in our land.’ The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Take from the dust of your land and wipe your foreheads with it. It is the ruqyah of Muhammad. Whoever takes a bribe for it or conceals it from anyone will never succeed.’” Type: Marfū‘.

The Messenger of God ﷺ asked him: “What did you recite into his ear?” He said: “I recited: ‘Did you think that We created you in vain…’ until the end of the surah.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “If a man with certainty recited it over a mountain, it would move.”

    ✧ I used to perform ruqyah in the Jahiliyyah for the fever of gib (a type of fever). When Islam came, I mentioned that to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said: "Present it to me." He ﷺ then said: "Perform ruqyah with it; there is no harm in it." By God, were it not for that, I would never have performed ruqyah with it on any person ever.

    ✧ Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf ؓ visited a sick man among the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ. They said—he mentioned some words—and he said: "Do not say that. Rather, say as the Messenger of God ﷺ used to say when he visited a sick person: 'O God, remove from him what he finds, and reward him in what You have tried him with.'"

    ✧ I fell ill, and the Messenger of God ﷺ used to seek protection for me. One day he sought protection for me and said: "In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. I seek protection for you with God, the One, the Eternal, who did not beget and was not begotten, and none is equal to Him, from the evil of what you find." When the Messenger of God ﷺ stood up to leave, he said: "O 'Uthman, seek protection with it, for you have never sought protection with anything like it."

    ✧ One day I entered upon the Messenger of God ﷺ, and there was a pot boiling with meat. A piece of fat appealed to me, so I took it and swallowed it, and I suffered from it for a year. Then I mentioned it to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said: "There were in it the souls of seven people." Then he ﷺ wiped my belly, and I threw it up green. By the One who sent him with the truth, my belly has not hurt me until this moment.

    بَيْنَمَا عُمَيْرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ فِلَسْطِينَ، وَكَانَ يُقَالُ لَهُ: نَسِيجُ وَحْدِهِ، فَقَعَدْنَا عَلَى دُكَّانٍ لَهُ عَظِيمٍ فِي دَارِهِ، فَقَالَ لِغُلَامِهِ: يَا غُلَامُ، أَوْرِدِ الْخَيْلَ، وَفِي الدَّارِ تَوْرٌ مِنْ حِجَارَةٍ، قَالَ: فَأَوْرَدَهَا، فَقَالَ: أَيْنَ فُلَانَةُ ؟ قَالَ: هِيَ جَرِبَةٌ تَقْطُرُ دَمًا، أَوْ قَالَ: مَاءً، شَكَّ إِبْرَاهِيمُ، قَالَ: أَوْرِدْهَا، فَقَالَ أَحَدُ الْقَوْمِ: إِذًا تَجْرَبُ الْإِبِلُ كُلُّهَا، قَالَ: أَوْرِدْهَا ; فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: « لَا عَدْوَى، وَلَا طِيَرَةَ، وَلَا هَامَةَ، أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الْبَعِيرِ يَكُونُ فِي الصَّحْرَاءِ ثُمَّ يُصْبِحُ فِي كِرْكِرَتِهِ أَوْ مَرَاقِّهِ نُكْتَةٌ لَمْ يَكُنْ قَبْلُ ذَلِكَ، فَمَنْ أَعْدَى الْأَوَّلَ ؟

    ✧ While 'Umayr b. Sa'd was among a group of people from Palestine—and he was called 'Naseej Wahdih' (unique in his kind)—we sat on a large bench in his house. He said to his servant: "Boy, bring the horses to water." In the house there was a stone trough. He brought them to water. Then he said: "Where is so-and-so?" He said: "She is mangy, dripping blood," or he said "water"—Ibrahim was unsure. He said: "Bring her to water." One of the people said: "Then all the camels will get mange." He said: "Bring her to water, for I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'There is no contagion, no bad omen, and no Haamah. Do you not see the camel that is in the desert and then a spot appears on its chest or flanks that was not there before? Who infected the first one?'"

    ✧ I brought a young boy to 'A'ishah so that she might supplicate for him. They lifted a pillow on which the boy was, and 'A'ishah ؓ saw a razor beneath it. She said, "What is this?" He said, "We place it as protection from the jinn and fright." He said, "So 'A'ishah ؓ took it and threw it away, saying, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to hate superstition and dislike it.'"

I said, "My daughter is ill, so I steeped this for her." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has not placed your cure in what is unlawful."

    ✧ A man among us complained of a severe illness, and the physicians said: 'He will not recover except by cauterization.' His family wanted to cauterize him, but some of them said: 'No, until we consult the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' So they consulted him, and he said: 'No.' Then the man recovered. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him, he said: 'Is this the companion of Banu so-and-so?' They said: 'Yes.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Indeed, if this man had been cauterized, people would have said: It was only the cauterization that cured him.'

    إِنَّ امْرَأَةً أَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بِابْنٍ لَهَا قَدْ سُقِيَ بَطْنُهُ، فَقَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ ابْنِي أَصَابَهُ مَا تَرَى ؟ أَفَأَكْوِيهِ ؟ فَقَالَ ﷺ: « لَا تَكْوِي ابْنَكِ » فَأَجْمَعَتْ عَلَى أَنْ لَا تَكْوِيَهُ، فَعَثَرَ بِهِ بَعِيرٌ فَخَبَطَهُ، أَوْ لَبَطَهُ، فَفَقَأَ بَطْنَهُ، فَبَرَأَ، فَرَجَعَتْ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ: بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي أَنْتَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، اسْتَأْذَنْتُكَ فِي ابْنِي أَنْ تَكْوِيَهُ فَنَهَيْتَنِي، فَمَرَّ بِهِ بَعِيرٌ فَخَبَطَهُ أَوْ لَبَطَهُ، فَفَقَأَ وَبَرَأَ، فَقَالَ ﷺ: « أَمَا إِنِّي لَوْ أَذِنْتُ لَكِ لَزَعَمْتِ أَنَّ النَّارَ هِيَ الَّتِي شَفَتْهُ

    ✧ A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ with a son of hers whose belly was swollen with water. She said: 'O Messenger of Allah, my son has been afflicted with what you see; should I cauterize him?' He ﷺ said: 'Do not cauterize your son.' She resolved not to cauterize him. Then a camel stumbled over him and struck him, or kicked him, and burst his belly, and he recovered. She returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'May my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah. I asked your permission to cauterize my son, and you forbade me. Then a camel passed by him and struck him, or kicked him, and burst his belly, and he recovered.' He ﷺ said: 'Indeed, had I given you permission, you would have claimed that it was the fire that cured him.'

    دَخَلْتُ مَعَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ؓ عَلَى خَبَّابٍ ؓ وَقَدِ اكْتَوَى، فَقَالَ: يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ « أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّا قَدْ نُهِينَا عَنْ هَذَا وَكُرِهَ لَنَا هَذَا ؟ فَقَالَ خَبَّابٌ ؓ: اشْتَدَّ الْبَلَاءُ، وَقَالَ الْأَطِبَّاءُ: لَا دَوَاءَ لَكَ إِلَّا هَذَا، قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: « مَا كُنْتُ أَخَافُكَ عَلَى هَذَا »

    ✧ I entered with 'Abdullah b. Mas'ud ؓ upon Khabbab ؓ, and he had been cauterized. He said: 'O Abu 'Abdullah, do you not know that we have been forbidden from this and it is disliked for us?' Khabbab ؓ said: 'The affliction became severe, and the physicians said: There is no remedy for you except this.' 'Abdullah said: 'I was not afraid that you would do this.'

    ✧ I heard Muhammad b. Sirin say to a servant who wanted to be cupped at the beginning of the month: 'Do not get cupped at the beginning of the month, for cupping at the beginning of the month is of no benefit.'
