✧ We went out to sea with Mu'awiyah ؓ, and our ship joined up with a ship in which Abu Ayyub ؓ was. When our food was ready, we sent for him and he came to us and said… and he mentioned the hadith. He said: There was with us a jester who would say to the man in charge of our food: 'O so-and-so, may Allah reward you with good and evil.' When he did that to him a lot, the man started getting angry with him and insulting him. The jester said: 'What do you say, Abu Ayyub, if I say: May Allah reward you with good and evil, and he insults me?' Abu Ayyub said: 'You said to him: We used to say: "Whoever good does not set right, evil will set right."' The jester said to the man: 'May Allah reward you with evil and shame.' The man laughed and was pleased, and said: 'Do not ever give up your jesting.' The jester said: 'May Allah reward Abu Ayyub with good, for he said to me.'
